Readjust your tinfoil hats and you won't be affected. Or at least, not any more affected than you are by the constant humming of the air circulators in any office, warehouse, store, mall...

*sigh*

If I can get past putting my hands on people I don't know and not get sick from it.. surely people can live 1 mile away from a wind turbine.

So thats why pot and hookers are legal in Amsterdam. To keep there minds off of having that horrible windmill induced syndrome.

Isn't this a repeat from almost a year ago?

For farks sake, I want one in my back yard. I'll even let them lease the land for free in exchange for my electricity.

Aniel says he, six other physicians and one family nurse practitioner believe the conditions they've found online - things called "acoustic radiation" and "wind turbine syndrome," among them - and the possible symptoms - nausea, back problems, mood disorders, seizures, even heart attack lowered property values - are serious enough to stall new wind projects while medical researchers around the world gather more information.

There we go! Fixed that.

It sounds more like "Typical Woman Syndrome". They make mood stabilizing pills for that.

NutWrench: lowered property values

Most wind farms I've seen are on hilltops on farmland, not smack in the middle of the suburbs. I don't see how property values would be affected.

I remember hearing about this. Here, in fact.

Old news.

But I still think they're a good idea. I wish I had one.

Wow. just wow. People have been using windmills for over 1000 years and yet I have never heard of this problem until today. Maybe some should develop a pill to treat this new "condition".

Personally I would much rather live close to a wind farm than a coal fired power plant.

FTA: The phrase "vibroacoustic syndrome" started him Googling.

Indeed.

So... if it's on Google, it's true? These people should read Time Cube so they can realize what's actually going on here. Then again, they might take it seriously because the Internet is Serious Businesstm!

Yup, I know. Whenever people protest these things they try to feign concern with some some BS about environmental impacts or health issues but they're really just concerned about the resale value of their property.

Every time something good comes along, somebody has to screw it up:
can't gorge yourself or you'll get fat; can't smoke cigarettes or you'll get cancer; can't drink or you'll get liver disease; can't have unprotected sex or you'll get an STD.
There are people in this world whose only job is to be a killjoy for the rest of us.

Well that does it, take down all those wind farms and start mass producing coal burning, and nuclear power plants. Maybe damn up a bunch of rivers, flood some low laying farm land so we can have some hydroplants.

THIS!!
I was going to get one right across the street, at the Tech school where they teach a wind power class. Turns out there is a law that says no residences can be within the falling distance of the tower. Bummer.

At least my in-laws are fighting the windmills the utilities want to put by the lake they live on in upstate NY for non-tinfoil hat reasons.

-They're concerned about the background noise on those summer nights on the lake
and most reasonably:
-The best estimate on what effect it will have on their electric bill was to lower it $2/mo. They're willing to scrape up the extra cash to not have it by the lake.

Pave_the_Planet 2009-02-15 10:03:15 AM
...as opposed to traffic driving by, the cat howling, the neighbor's dogs barking, the neighbor building his new shed, the constant hum of the television, the frogs and other such animals in the pond nearby, people in the house snoring...

Yeah, they're so loud and obnoxious that the precious snowflakes (adults included) might hurt themselves.

Bring on the coal sludge and uranium!

Midnight Rambler: I live not too far from a long series of wind farms. It's a hell of a sight.

The ones just off the coast of Denmark (Öresund Bridge) are equally impressive. I get to see them every three weeks or so =)

I saw a rather silly implementation in the Czech Republic (very close to Prague) a while ago. They installed two huge turbines close-ish to some small towns and the people living there protested them quite vigorously. I used to wonder what the big deal was until I saw them up close. Man...no wonder those people felt a bit anxious with those monstrosities close to their towns.

But that beautiful brown ring around the lake from AES Somerset's coal-burning power plant is lovely that time of year. So is that huge pile of dead fish all along the beaches.

I present to you the Atlantic City Wind Farm, viewed from Rt. 30:

msnbcmedia4.msn.com

Its 5 turbines provide 60% of the power for Atlantic County's wastewater treatment plant. In the 4 years the farm's been operational, property values of houses in view of it went UP. The reason: people think it's cool-looking.

Crybaby NIMBY's in Toronto are protesting a proposed wind farm 5km off the coast of Lake Ontario.

Can I protest the nuclear power plant they want to build 10 km away? Noooo, it's gonna provide jobs for all you uneducated slobs. (monorail ;-)

As opposed to boat engines? I live across from a river and there are boats out there into all hours of the night.

and most reasonably:
-The best estimate on what effect it will have on their electric bill was to lower it $2/mo. They're willing to scrape up the extra cash to not have it by the lake.

So instead of saving money (albeit only $24/year), they're willing to SPEND money in a down economy to fight putting them up? Do they live there year-round or is it a summer place? What about any money injected into the economy by the construction of it in the first place? At least building those things makes far better sense than building another house, golf course, or strip mall.
