Rich people? I have always chosen to live in cities that never cut down their trees and I have never been described as "rich".

I am not doubting the research here, but couldn't the correlation between living in tree lined streets and happy healthy lives be also explained otherwise.

I have noticed that on average you are more liekly to find tree lined streets in rich neighborhoods than poor neighborhoods. Those who have moeny tend to live haelthier lives than those who don't. I don't really know about happiness but that is hard to quantify anyway and even if moeny can't buy happiness it can always buy lots of other things.

You would probably get the same correlation between helathier longer lives and a number of other things that usually indicate that someone is more likely to be financially well off. That doesn't mean that those things cause helath or happniess just that they often go together.

Will someone please tell the developers before building yet another cookie cutter neighborhood? Some of us kind of like big old trees. And don't give me that line about liability issues. That's why you have insurance; in case the tree falls and causes damage. I hate neighborhoods where the tallest vegetation is shrubbery, or farking sweetgums.

To pile on, for example, in Delaware, the trend has been for developers to buy up treeless farmland and turn it into high-end, suburban, McMansion neighborhoods. Barren and lifeless. And so are the neighborhoods.

Um, that is not a street. That is a strip mall. Let's at least be fair. I am somewhat biased, though, since I am an urban forester in a very rich city.

The "Broken Window" theory which was behind the zero tolerance program in NYC is based on the idea that cleaning things up tends to make neighborhoods more pleasant to live in.

"Nature calms people and it also helps them psychologically rejuvenate,"

There aren't many mature trees where I live because it was a vast corn field merely 5 years ago. But there's lots of nature to observe. For example, the huge skies are perfect for observing astronomy and weather. I never knew much about horned larks, either, but they love this environment and have become one of my favorite birds. We also see flocks of sandhill cranes flying overhead like pterodactyls. You can hear coyotes, foxes and owls calling at night. Etc. I'm very happy with the nature provided here.

In other words, this article is a case study on "correlation does not prove causation." One could say the same thing about the number of golf clubs a person owns!

flaffle 2009-02-15 09:27:59 AM
I think the point the article was trying but failed to do was that people that live in a nature heavy environment tend to get off their fat asses, go outside, and get some sun and exercise. I live in a small country town where there are more trees and parks then you can shake a stick at. It's a working class community. The kids go outside and play. The adults jog, mountain bike, fish and hike. The correlation is that exercise makes you happy and when given access to places to exercise you will do so with greater frequency. This reminds of the article some years back that said people that had a walkable community were happier and healthier. Same thing.

And hippies are largely vegan, which means their shadows are sorta skinny and lame. To bask in a real shadow, you have to go to San Antonio. Land of hot sun and pork fat laden frijoles. Get a good brisk breeze to remove the effects of the frijoles, and you got yourself a shadow worthy of the name.

The "Broken Window" theory which was behind the zero tolerance program in NYC is based on the idea that cleaning things up tends to make neighborhoods more pleasant to live in.

A recent newspaper story about Lowell, Mass. found that the "broken window" system worked well, arresting people barely worked, and increasing social services had no effect on crime.

Huge oak tree in our front yard. Took a lightning strike 2 years ago and other than an enormous zipper-like scar in the bark it's no worse for the wear.

The base is well over 8 feet wide!

This reminds me of The Timeless Way, a book on the philosophy of urban design and architecture that was published in the late 70s. It dealt with the emergence of suburbs and how to build cities that people actually want to live in.

It would be nice if today's urban planners had actually read it.

markie_farkie: other than an enormous zipper-like scar in the bark it's no worse for the wear.

Give it time and that scar can become a huge, dead cavity. Much like subby's mom.

Nice tree though.

KidneyStone: Give it time and that scar can become a huge, dead cavity

I was worried about that too.. The bark at the edges has already healed and sealed off the rest of the tree from further damage. With any luck the remaining exposed part will stay dry enough to keep any kind of rot from setting in.

And yes, it's a great tree! 65+ feet tall.
