Sounds like he did something worthwhile if you ask me.

Arpiao is a complete shiatbag, but he's also a PR master. Any other politician would have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of lawsuits he has to deal with.

Personally, I think he's a figurehead for all of the worst problems with the US penal system.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested 72 people on warrants Saturday as part of a deadbeat-parent roundup called "Operation Tough Love."

Out of that total, only 17 were deadbeat parents.

I wonder how much this little failure of a police action cost the taxpayers?

Which is hilarious if you consider just how inept the government is at handling affairs of national security.

Yeah, I don't get this, either. I mean, I don't know as much about law enforcement as I'd like to, but it seems odd to me to sit on a bunch of warrants until you think of a clever name for the crack down. Especially when they're warrants for something Arpaio says right there in the article is a crime people often skip town on.

Swampthing in Korea 2009-02-15 07:41:04 AM
Remember people, according to the Left, enforcing border control is racist because the US did something bad 200 years ago and that negates any attempt to restrict illegal immigration by virtue of moral authority.

"The bottom line is they should have respect and surrender," Arpaio said.

Cunning plan there, Joe, just ask all the deadbeats to turn themselves in because they should respect you for not catching them.

The Selective Service is mandatory, the organ donation program is completely voluntary (new window).

Whoever didn't pay their child support, seriously needs a good beat down.

If I catch you avoiding child support without my permission, expect your child support check to be in pieces on the ground.
Even if you offer to pay me more.

It's been done.

And what's up with the Sheriff Joe love by some people? He's not all that. How do I know? I have a 10-year-old athletic son. Do him...sure. Lust after him...not so much.

Why? Don't you want to do your job? No cameras or reporters around? Considering what you have cost the taxpayers YOU should have respect and resign.

As long as people voluntarily re-elect shiatbags with solid PR skills into public office, he is also a poster boy for what's wrong with the American electorate.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio isn't the most popular guy on Fark it seems. That's a shocker. You mean he makes people in the county jail system live in tents and wear pink underwear and grow their own vegetables? Torture! I mean, it's not like jail is supposed to be bad, right?

I've had the misfortune to meet some people that don't think much of obeying the law. What do they think of jail? It's a country club. They watch tv and play video games and hang out with their friends that are all in jail too and you and I get to pay for it. Jail is supposed to make you NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO JAIL. If you are on the outside and get to break whatever laws you want, and the only possible consequence is to go to jail where you have it better than when you're out of jail...seems to me that's a problem.

kill minus nine 2009-02-15 08:05:05 AM
Real nice, Joe. So with your little 'sting', only 23% netted were actually 'deadbeat' parents. The rest? Well, heck. Tack on some drug charges (in which the specifics of THOSE arrests were suspiciously absent from TFA - wonder how many were pot related?) for the non-deadbeats and you're good to go, right? *sigh* Fark you, Joe. Fark you long and hard. Here's to hoping you're voted out during the next electoral go-round. Many of the mouthbreathers in this state may think you're a 'hero', but those of us with above room temperature IQs know better. Your attention-whoring cowboy tactics only serve to eat up precious taxpayer resources that the state can't afford right now. You are one reason why I moved out of your shiatty county for good.

Cuzweedoles: Jail is supposed to make you NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO JAIL.

Jail is where you hold people awaiting trial. It should be, you know, in accordance with "innocent until proven guilty".

This schmuck doesn't do that. He's a taskmaster - he tries to act tough toward vulnerable people in order to get elected.

This is ignoring people dying under his care, and his generally douchebaggery.

Pretty much, ya. But then again, it says something to me when a guy in Maricopa County, Arizona - a non-border county whose main population base lives about a hundred miles through nothing from the border - has to worry about border stuff. Like, maybe Yuma, Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties need to get their shiat together. But hey, I'm just the great-grandson of eight people who immigrated legally and all. What do I know?

I remember Penn & Teller interviewing him for their War on Drugs episode for Bullsh_t. I'm paraphrasing (because it's been about 4 years?), but the only logic he could provide for marijuana being illegal was because that keeps law-abiding citizens from saying, "What the heck; I'll give it a try!"

It made him look very stupid and power-hungry, and I'm guessing that's probably pretty spot-on.

I have no sympathy for deadbeat dads and moms, and even less for idiots that support them.

Since September, Burgett said, her task force has dismantled more than 20 cells, including five connected to the June 26 incident in which a group of gunmen - mistaken initially for military commandos or SWAT officers - fired more than 100 rounds into a drug house in a neighborhood near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road. Police later reported that Andrew Williams, a Jamaican drug dealer killed in the shootout, was targeted by the group for marijuana and cash.

OLd people. Old Senile people. People who get all their news from Fox News, AM talk Radio and scare-mongering Reader's Digest articles. GAWD fearin' people who yearn for "the good old days when air was clean and sex was dirty", aka the "git off mah lawn" types.

Let's try quoting the article again, perhaps in small enough chunks your inability to RTFA will be countered by the sheer force and speed of small logic bullets bursting through your impenetrable idiot-armor:

holy crap. thats quite a few handicapped dead folks and a lot of money paid out while this guy has been in charge. even here in saskatoon saskatchewan we haven't had that many fatalities and everyone still makes jokes about what the saskatoon city police do to their indian prisoners

Mr. Right 2009-02-15 09:13:00 AM
Deadbeat parents need to pay. It's called taking responsibility for the children you produced while you were so joyfully farking someone you thought you couldn't live without. Just because you later found out that the other parent of your child is a total douchebag does not relieve you of the responsibility of taking care of your child. If you then want to ignore the lawful ruling of a court of law and be a deadbeat, a stint under the loving care of Sheriff Joe seems appropriate. The notion of punishment is to make non-compliance with the law less tolerable than compliance.

No Such Agency 2009-02-15 09:17:56 AM
When this guy goes down, some truly horrific revelations will emerge about just what he's been up to, mark my words. He's showed his total disregard for human rights, his willingness to terrorize others for his own gain, and his belief that people charged with or convicted of crimes are sub-human.

I would not be at all surprised if he/his people have outright committed murder or other major crimes, under the cover of his personal gulag.

Weaver95: I wonder how much this little failure of a police action cost the taxpayers?

A lot, but the wizened old bags who keep voting him in just hear "He's tough on people who aren't like you" because their hearing aids automatically tune out the "while costing our county millions in lawsuits every year" part of the sentence. With Brewer gutting everything in an attempt to balance the State budget, I don't think she'll be all that thrilled with his lawsuit inducing antics so there is hope that the attempts to get him removed from office will have State level support.

Sheriff Joe is very rough around the edges and severely bends many laws, but at least he's doing something.

Too many sheriffs are elected in, then sit on their butts.

Jail should not be fun or easy. Anyone who's stupid enough to commit a crime in his jurisdiction deserves pink underwear and manual labor.

Yes. He hemorrages money from the county because he's such an ignorant little fascist that he can't seem to grasp the fact that just because someone is accused of a crime, they are not necessarily guilty. Punishment is supposed to be determined by the Judicial system, not his overinflated sense of self-worth.
