This + marionettes = maybe best Bonnaroo performance ever

He's gotten pretty good mileage out of this song. You don't see many B-sides on SNL.

I will third this. It is not my normal type of music, but I am drawn to most of his work.

I do need a Haircut now that I think about it.

From what I understand, Beck is like the "anti-Will Smith"-type of Scientologist.

Everyone knows he is one, but he really doesn't follow their cult teachings or consider himself to be much of one.

Oh, and I liked the clip as well as Tom Waits' version. I'm sorry that doesn't make me as cool as half the other people in this thread.

There's a fine line between clever and stoopid... Beck generally keeps a foot on either side of that line, but he does come across as a fairly likeable nerdlinger.

Anyone else read that as "Barack plays "Clap Hands" on TV"?

Oh man, does Beck suck balls.

/For a long time I thought Beck and Jeff Beck were the same guy, turns out they just share a love of suck.

sknight: Tom Waits called, he wants his original, weirder song concept and title back.

For me at least, Beck represents this newer generation's Tom Waits, in that he's a singer/songwriter who tries some strange concepts, writes in a wide array of genres, continues to change his sound from album to album, and is generally very respected in the community.

The only problem is, Tom Waits takes enormous risks with his music, and has done so for decades. While this can yield some challenging/unlistenable stuff, most of it is ground-breaking and wholey unique. Beck doesn't take these risks and ends up more watered down and less original, but the payoff is much of his work is very accessible/listenable.

I don't own any Beck albums, but I own a lot of Waits albums...

I own most every Beck album and he is definitely willing to take risks. His album Sea Change is melancholy, introspective and in the same vein as Nick Drake. That's quite a risk coming from the Two Turntables and a Microphone Beck.

I highly recommend that album, but if you're in the dumps don't play it around sharp objects.

Beck is so farking cool. Why the hell does he have to be a Scientologist?

Tommy Moo: Beck is so farking cool. Why the hell does he have to be a Scientologist?

He was raised one. That and the fact that he's not really public about it are the main reasons I give him a pass. You can't help what your parents raised you as, but you can choose not to be a jerk about it.

Glasgowsfinest: Heh. I liked it. I always like Beck, no idea why.

For me, it's because I know that I'll never be bored with a Beck album. Some are clearly superior to others, but it's always interesting, and it always takes more than just a cursory listen to really appreciate it.

/was pleasantly surprised with "Sea Change"

Uh, a lot of people raised in a religion don't grow up to continue to follow it.

Neat vid tho.

I love Beck and Odelay is one of my favorite albums.

I am the enchanting wizard of rhythm

Taima: Uh, a lot of people raised in a religion don't grow up to continue to follow it.

Sure, and a lot do, even if they don't really believe it. It's easier to keep up appearances than to deal with the family problems that leaving a religion can cause. Some people just reason that it's easier to go to church once in a while than to never talk to their parents again.

Like I said, he's also not being a jerk about it. If he was out there advertising it like Tom Cruise it would be a lot harder for me to appreciate his work.

I was told this song was made for a Japanese only released CD because Beck though it would be funny to hear fans sing "crap hands."
