Well you better start drafting people as conscripts then, because I don't think you're going to get very many volunteers knowing their country isn't going to cover their backs.

It's funny living in a country that's so huge and important but still seen as a bit of a loose cannon around the world. If an Italian were taken to the Hague and held there Italy might send a harshly worded letter but try that with an American and you might get Marines storming the Hague with or without this law.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-02-14 11:55:38 AM
Ellis suggests that Obama, a constitutional scholar, "realizes what this law means.... But we will have to wait to see how quickly [the new administration] can backtrack."

What does being a constitutional scholar have to do with this? This is about international relations.

I like how we can just pass laws to legalize invasions. I'm sure that means the Dutch would have respected a US invasion since there is a law in Congress that says it is OK.

ZAZ: What does being a constitutional scholar have to do with this? This is about international relations.

I would say that generally a constitutional scholar is going to have enough knowledge about broader frameworks and laws to have at least a basic understanding of international law. And this is about international law. I would very much imagine studying constitutional law also requires the study of a broader base of law and legality than just the US Constitution. At least, one would hope.

Since the Netherlands are part of NATO, would an invasion by the US force the other NATO members to retaliate? And on which side would they be?

"the law allows the US to constitutionally send jack-booted commandos to fly over fields of innocent tulips, swoop into the land of wooden shoes, tread past threatening windmills and sleepy milk cows into the Dutch capital - into a city synonymous with international law - and pry loose any US troops."

That's actually the exact quote from the law.

How about telling our troops to stop torturing people? And The Hague is not Guantanamo, any US troops that ever get placed there will be able to have full representation by any attorney they can get, and I'm sure they would get the best. Even Slobodan Milosevic got some of the best lawyers.

IIRC the constitution says something about respecting international treaties and this probably violates several treaties.

Yep - these people are known to "loathe the military". And vice versa.

I would guess part of their strategy is to actually try to dampen enlistment.

"What would we have if people just refused to fight?"
"Peace?"
- M*A*S*H

But yes, this is just part of Obama's insidious plan to decimate the US military so that in four years, when the One World Government sends "Peacekeepers" to assist the fairness of his "election" as Supreme Chancellor For Life, there will be no patriotic American soldiers left to challenge them.

Shryke: I would guess that if he did this, he would be impeached within a month.

Why? There's a good chance the law isn't Constitutional, and it certainly violates any number of international treaties that we've signed.

It speaks well of the Dutch people that they've simply ignored our stupidity, instead of cutting off all ties with us.

crab66 2009-02-14 07:23:50 PM
America. We are morally superior.

We are the chosen nation of Jesus and are above all laws of man.

Oh and we have more guns so that gives us the right to do whatever the fark we want and still proclaim righteousness.
