Of all the shiat bands reuniting (Creed, New Kids on the Block, The Spice Girls), what's holding Soundgarden up? All of the band members are still alive and healthy, Pearl Jam isn't working on anything new at the moment, so Matt Cameron is at least temporarily available, and God knows Chris Cornell's solo project isn't good enough to warrant him staying solo.

So, it's a good song in advance of tomorrow's shiatty metal link.

Badmotorfinger Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas FTW

Soundgarden was a metal band. Same with Alice in Chains.

Huh? I'll listen to Jar of Flies again, but I'm not believing you. The day that sounds like Slayer or Megadeth, I'll get back to you. I'm sure you think STP is a metal band as well?

Seattle? Check.
Early 90s? Check
overgrown, unkempt hair? Check
flannel shirts? Check
Slow, nonmetal tempo? Check

Don't get me wrong, Chris Cornell has a strong voice, and metal sense of throwing TVs out of hotel windows while on tour, but that's as close as they get to Metal bands.

Great song great band. The idea of a Saturday Grunge Revival works. Pearl Jam new album this year

PJ is working on a new record right now, should be out by the end of the year.

Matt Cameron probably has better things to do (Harrybu McCage, Wellwater Conspiracy) than attempt to convince Cornell that this whole Timbaland thing just isn't as good as Cornell likes to think so. Cornell likes to think his new record sounds like Pink Floyd. I'm not kidding. (new window)

They aren't reuniting because they really, really, really hate each other.

I for one miss grunge, and have formed a grunge band. not solely grunge though, as I wanted to mix a bit of proto-punk in there with some early-radiohead/pumpkins influence.

/fellating my own ego...

Does Chris Cornell realize he recorded Billie Jean?

Man, he's right on track to carry the Sting/Paul Westerberg torch of age being proportionate to crappiness.

One of my favorite songs -- because I was a Californian, and looked it, that lived in Minnesota, and felt it ( 40 below zero? You better believe I felt that ), and I am outshined everyday no matter how hard I try. It's like Soundgarden watched my life for three winters and counting

/ you don't measure time in years in Minnesota, you measure it in winters.

// managed to escape back home to California.

One of the best songs from one of the best albums of the early 90s. Just because they're from Seattle doesn't make them grunge.

Also got to love Matt Cameron for seeming to be genetically opposed to 4/4 time.

CaptainJuan 2009-02-14 06:52:27 PM
I couldn't stand Cornell's older solo albums, but Scream has a lot of quality songs. Give it a chance. Timbaland is a good producer, and everything he touches turns to gold.

FTFY. Soundgarden are most definitely a grunge band. Not that I care so much about labels, but them, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Mud Honey and Alice In Chains define the grunge genre.

One of my favorite bands ever. The whole early 90s Seattle grunge era is actually my favorite moment in music history soooo many great bands.

My guess is that Cornell doesn't realize this fact due to an ego issue (pretty typical of rock singers).
Too bad because I'd love to see a new Soundgarden album too.

I saw an interview with SG guitarist years ago about how the "Seattle Sound" was defined by certain chord progessions and whatnot. He played a riff that sounded like a basic metal riff and then he said "this is what that would sound like from a Seattle band" and he moved up/down a half-step or somesuch (my musician-foo is weak) and replayed it and it sounded like an SG riff.

Soundgarden is awesome. So many good songs, and their first album is awesome. I like that they were self-aware about the whole thing... From wiki:

The album's cover art was taken by grunge photographer Charles Peterson, and features a black and white picture of Cornell. Cornell called the album cover "the quintessential angry young man."[13] Regarding the title, Cornell said, "It's sort of making fun of heavy metal bravado. Metal bands would say Louder Than Thunder or something. So Louder Than Love, what is Louder Than Love?"[3] Thayil said that the band really wanted to call the album Louder Than fark.[14]

/I put on "Gun" in a bar jukebox a few months ago and some random guy came up and was like "did you put that on? awesome, man!"
//lives in seattle

Any retrospective should have started with this... THE grunge song... (pops)

As for Soundgarden, Ultramega OK and Louder Than Love rock. Badmotorfinger was the beginning of the suck...

Madbassist1 [TotalFark] 2009-02-15 07:16:54 AM
one, grunge is not a broad enough genre to warrant its own weekly thread, so there.

second, grunge = slow and sloppy. Tasteful, artful, but slow and sloppy i.e. nirvana, pearljam

soundgarden != grunge. Being from seattle does not automatically make you grunge.

/jesus christ pose or mind riot would have been better.

GypsyJoker 2009-02-15 01:56:13 PM
By far the best of the grunge groups. Considering their approach to songwriting and their love of odd meters ("Face Pollution," anyone?), they're practically grunge-prog.

As a matter of fact, yes. You would have killed to see that show, I assure you.

Whilst I am no fan of grunge, badmotorfinger didn't feel too grungy to my ears (hence I liked it far more than anything Nirvana put out), and "I'm lookin' California and feelin' Minnesota" is arguably one of the best lines ever commited to music.

\yeah, I realize I'm now "That Guy" who hops in threads and biatches about the stuff you like and he doesn't
\\yeah, I know grunge killed a LOT of shiatty hair metal bands. Thank you, Seattle.
>>>Thank you Seattle for giving the world Queensryche, too.
//dislike grunge, but I can at least respect that it gave the music industry a much needed boot to the yamsack
