VPN to foreign ISP... Problem solved.

/I would say to a U.S ISP but, I figure they're already looking.
//That why I like to surf some really sick shiat. I'm gonna make the watchers earn their paychecks.

I think its about time the programmers that be institute PKI in the TCP/IP data packets. That way the only thing the ISP see's is headers, the actual data would be encrypted using a PGP/GPG type structure.

Then the internets would be secure from big brother and their hatred towards porn

TORONTO, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A judge in Canada has ruled that Internet
users have no expectation of privacy and police can use track people through Internet protocols without warrants.

Now we're going to have Canadian pr0n-viewing refugees running south across the border. They're going to take what few jobs we have left--

oh wait... we don't have any jobs left!

Something tells me this is already illegal. Why would a good citizen need this? Only criminals have something to hide. If you haven't done anything you've got nothing to worry about. BB! BB! BB!

Dubai Vol 2009-02-14 10:28:20 AM
I live in an Islamic country and all my internet goes through a proxy that purports to filter out all the p0rn.

Basically it stops Mrs Dubai from buying stockings online.

But other stuff? not so much. I won't bother to prove it. If there is sicker pr0n out there, I don't want to see it. I don't want to see plenty of the things that I CAN see despite the proxy filter.

But any thread like this deserves a bit of fun:

You watch, this will get to the supreme court and be reversed, at least half of the judges on the supreme court are competent. More will be on the line too, and the big guns will be arguing for privacy, which has been repeatedly held to be constitutionally protected.

FTFY. You need to understand that governments can't spend money on this for a long period of time before they get into trouble with the infuriated citizens and soldiers.

Bhruic 2009-02-14 10:38:27 AM
This is an idiotic decision.

With that being said, it's nowhere near as bad as the article headline makes it sound - they are allowed to obtain your ip without a search warrant, not your browsing history (which ISPs don't save anyway).

Malbar: Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms sucks. It has been responsible for more curtailment than protection of rights during its short history.

Someone needs to toss that thing in the shredder and come up with a real constitution.

Elaborate. I see no hard evidence of which you speak.

Whenever the government gets caught doing this crap, they promise not to do it again and then simply move the equipment/funding somewhere else and continue the same program under a different name.

Hell, eventually we'll all progress from a police state to a military state & everyone comes under martial jurisdiction.

Guilty till proven innocent? Arrested for not following a lawful order? Sooner than you think...

kpaxoid 2009-02-14 10:42:06 AM
If law enforcement agencies are no longer required to show cause to invade a person's privacy, such as in obtaining a search warrant to do so, then there is no privacy.

It does not matter whether it is bugging or tracing internet traffic or whatever.

Funk Brothers: FTFY. You need to understand that governments can't spend money on this for a long period of time before they get into trouble with the infuriated citizens and soldiers.

And you need to understand that -- thanks to technology -- most of this type of monitoring is automated in the U.S. to the point that it doesn't require an inordinate amount of sustained capital to keep itself going. As for the soldiers, they've got wars to contend with right now, so they're busy (just like in 1984). As for the infuriated citizens? They're currently being raped by their government, their banking and financial institutions, and their employers, so they're a little bit distracted right now.

Your 7th grade Social Studies teacher only told you that 1984 could never really happen in order to keep you from worrying about it too much. She really didn't know what she was talking about.

Not to mention that this is one province, not the country. Granted it is the most populous province but still. Only binding in Ontario and this will be appealed.

PJ_the_Barbarian 2009-02-14 10:58:19 AM
While it would be nice to have an expectation of privacy online, the fact of the matter is that there already isn't any. While this is probably just another case of "Confused old person in power figures anything she doesn't understand doesn't need to be protected" it's just on the outside of possible that the court understands that regular internet traffic can already basically be tracked by anyone with the will and the knowledge, unless the surfer is actually knowledgeable and cautious about their surfing habits.

Treating the internet the way we do, and then complaining about lack of privacy, is kind of like printing up a bunch of index cards with our private information on them, then dropping them all over town, and then getting angry when we're the victims of identity theft.

I don't know about that. Personally, I don't think we should continue to pay extra for the tomatoes and sour cream.

Oh_Enough_Already 2009-02-14 11:09:49 AM
Well, here in the states the idea of charging people with child porn crimes who don't actually possess any merely because their IP address is shown to have visited a page where CP allegedly was stored - even if it's no longer there at the time of the arrest - is gaining traction.

No evidence, no proof, no contraband.

Digital "thought crimes" prosecution at its finest.

The "male gaze" and the ability to criminalize and prosecute it is becoming a reality.

Now that's scary.

(particularlly given how easy it is to spoof IP addys, etc.)

I am thread jacking here. But, I think I have the million dollar idea.

"The Midget Channel" (MTV). Midgets 24 hours a day. Midget dramas, midget reality shows, midget sports. And a special pay-per-view midget porn for extra cash.

Is that a great idea or what?

Look, I don't really understand why people are so into midget porn. They just don't appeal to me; their asses are overrated. How do I know? I have an athletic 10-year-old son. Do a midget...absolutely. Lust after a midget...not so much.

For those blaming Obama for things in the US, most of these sorts of protections went away under the Patriot Act, courtesy of Bush, Cheney, and Gonzales.

some how i know this was a knee jerk reaction to the child porn... the RCMP have become extermly efficent at root the bastards out (don't get me wrong, power to them.), sadly some of them hide behind laws that protect everyday good people. i say they should need a warrant, or we'll end back where we were in my grand parents day, when the RCMP could walk into your house anytime of day with out cause or reason, and if you tried to stop them, you where arrested.
it wasn't that long ago either.

/the fact the could never find grampie's still, or nana's stash my also have pissed them off... but the point was, they had no evidents for any of the raids.

Oh oh! Take the U.S. Constitution, but you know, actually follow it. It's a great constitution, it just gets ignored here. American people are largely ignorant of and apathetic towards American government.

This is exactly why the American Founding Fathers said there should be a revolution every twenty years.
I wish an independent and revolutionary spirit was instilled in our children at an early age. Maybe there would be more politically active citizens, allowing better control of the government.
