The ladies will beat any primary challenger the GOP tries to throw against them, and if they try to force them out, the outrage from Mainers will kill any hope the GOP would have up there for a generation.

But go ahead. Try to kick them out. I'm sure they'll be welcome in the Democratic party.

I wish them luck in getting Impie out. They'll need it, because she's one of the best damn Senators that the GOP has right now. With seniority, with her seat on Intelligence, Finance, International Trade, Commerce and Small Business--and a voice that rejected NAFTA and rightly so--losing Olympia Snowe from the Senate would just hand that seat back to Democrat next go around.

She is a great Senator. Good for Maine, and good for the country, and most of her constituents realize this. She should be closer to leading the damn party--cool headed, strong on defense, and adept at trade and environmental issues balancing the needs of business.

We really need to kick a lot of these RINOs who think that the GOP is about guns, Jesus and tax cuts...

Why's it bothering you to see Republicans ruining only themselves?

Count me among the gleeful grave-dancers. Trust me on this one, I know karma, this hasn't even begun to payback the Miserable Failure of Bush yet, much less rack up new 'karma debt.'

I honestly hope they succeed. If they'd kick out the moderates maybe a decent party would occur instead of a bunch of Bible thumping freaks running things.

By spitting in the face of bipartisanship and voting as a bloc against Obama, the GOP is pretty much "all in," gambling their entire future. Their problem is that Bush lowered the bar so much, Obama doesn't have to succeed spectacularly to look good, and if he does, the GOP is going to end up on display in a museum somewhere.

I don't think they have thought through their cunning plan.

Aye.

I agree with this - any Senator that voted for this bail out is no fiscal conservative and deserves to be booted. Quickly.

IT WILL WORK!

A larger portion of the country identifies themselves as conservative vs. liberal.

Bush WAS NOT conservative - he was a "republican"...and even that is a stretch. McCain is(was) VERY socially liberal.

Sure, any other Repubs in ME may lose - but they are democrats anyway - so who cares. Punish them. this is not a case of "cutting ones nose of despite their face".

Run pure an proud conservative vs a openly liberal and he/she will win in a country wide election - I guarantee it.

Liberals usually try to appear more central when they run - and republicans try to shift convince everyone that they are true conservatives. Barry and McShame both shifted right during the general election.

Punish these people (Collins, Snowe, Spector) - let them switch parties for all I care - their vote isn't reliable anyway so it is no lose.

He would! He would be Liberman...or McCain. So not really true conservative but more conservative then most of the party that he was once the front man for.

If the choice is between a democrat and a democrate lite the voters will vote for the democrat. Face it the republicans need to offer more than just being a slighly less weeny version of the democrats.

The destruction of the Republican Party is the funniest thing going these days.

They are stuck between the Scylla and Charybdis here. Rove filled their Big Tent with Bevets and GaryPDX clones and now they are threatening to burn it down if the GOP doesn't represent them properly - ie destroy the black guy even if the country goes down with him, outlaw gayness and replace the Constitution with the Bible.

It's farking hilarious. They don't have the ability to explain anything to these people because they're spent the last decade or so of collecting the most insane constituency imaginable and pounding nonsense into their heads. So now when they need to act more moderately in the best interests of the nation, all they are greeted with back home is "Burn The Witch!"

What's that old saw about catching a tiger by its tail?

How do you talk to people who dispute the age of rocks and think Saddam Hussein masterminded 911? FU GOP, you deserve every bit of this. Now STFU and watch a black man do the job the American People decided you can't. It must really burn your ass.

LOL LOL LOL

Spector's up for reelection in 2010. Ed Rendell's (PA Governor) term runs out that year as well.

Assuming he's still alive, my prediction is that Spector will step down, and the PA GOP (who lost the plot long ago) will run a real nutjob right-winger. Rendell will get the Democrat's nod and win handily, as that man knows how to get out the farking vote, and we'll send fat Eddie to DC, where he'll get along fine as he knows most of the movers and shakers already.

NeverDrunk23 2009-02-14 12:55:18 AM
I seem to recall a time where the GOP focused all their election attention on the hard-core right-winger voters who were going to vote for the party line no matter what the GOP did. I believe that ended really well for them.

This may be the trigger that 3rd parties have been waiting for. One of the two major parties is basically screaming that they aren't crazy enough and demand that more of their fringe minority become the party standard. They are fighting themselves. So, this is a golden time for a 3rd party to jump in and get their voice on the stage. More people are going to be listening now.

Speaking as someone who's enjoying the shiat out of watching the GOP paint itself deeper into a corner, I honestly hope you're right: we need more and broader representation of viewpoints in this country.

I'd really LOVE to see things get to the point were we have parties having to band together to form a majority. As imperfect as this system is, it's a hell of a lot better than what we have right now.

12349876 2009-02-14 01:22:19 AM
There are too many Congressional districts out there that will not vote for a radical of either party for there to be a majority that is the base of one party or the other. You have to rule with moderates and right now they're all Democrats (7 voted against the stimulus) and Republicans won't be back into power until they get some moderates to replace the current moderate Democrats

With the way the US electoral system works, there will probably never be a viable third party at the national level. This is a majoritarian system.

/now if we rewrote the constitution and became a parliamentary democracy with proportional representation...
//fun watching the right eat itself
///keep going further right!
////it'll totally work!
