And the last thing they felt was the Main Squeeze.

That sent a chill down my spine, I grew up with Billy Martin, Chuck's percussionist. A great drummer.
/sorry about the other guys, but I'm glad it's not Billy

Wow...I haven't heard Chuck Mangione's name since shortly after the 1980 Olympics.

/shows his age
//sad that *anyone* was in that crash

Gerry Niewood played sax and flute on most of the classic Mangione albums of the seventies including Alive!, Belavia, and Chase The Clouds Away. He rejoined the band in the mid-nineties.

Yeah, if I find out he plays the french horn, I'm taking the rest of the day off.

/cause he probably does, I probably will...

He is my brother's father-in-law. I was nervous enough when I saw the headline for this crash earlier (I have family within miles of it). This brought it even closer to home, though I don't know if my brother has any ties with these particular folks. Regardless of who died, it is certainly a sad day for a lot of families.

Fluegelhorn is his main instrument, but he plays a lot of them.

Well played. If I had more time I'd be looking for the Megalo Mart explosion funeral.

I was just watching Chuck Mangione play Feels So Good on a Midnight Special dvd yesterday.

I'm psychic, I guess.

Gerry Niewood also played sax for Simon & Garfunkel's Concert in the Park.

Hank was distracting the pilots with kazoos again huh? Every time he does that something blows up and people die.

I've heard of both of those guys, but I can't pinpoint stuff that they've been on. I'm sure they were top-flight musicians, being in Mangione's band. Sad news.

Chuck was responsible for a lot more than "Feels So Good". If you go back to the early 60s, he and his brother Gap Mangione recorded some terrific straight-ahead jazz under the name "The Jazz Brothers". Chuck's "Recuerdo" album of 1962 was pretty great, too.

Niewood wrote a composition called "Joy" that is one of the great jazz pieces. Everytime I hear it I am surprised that it is not a standard on the Basie/Ellington level.

That's sad.

That being said, I used to work for a horrible phone company and every time I had to call the department in Ohio (or Iowa, I forget), the hold music for that department was Feels So Good.. problem it was like half the song, and would repeat over and over and over ... 10 minute holds to ask a question about a local ANI service CSR for some schlub sure did suck ass.
