Too bad economics is rooted in the same physical laws as physics and chemistry, and will operate the same way no matter what the government decrees. Too bad for all of us who have to suffer the consequences of their abject incompetence, that is.

John Galt wasn't corrupt. The economic meltdown has some shady dealings at its core. Galt loved earning money not stealing it.

i know i shouldn't, but i've been sitting here contemplating this statement for a while, and it's really perplexing.

the same physical laws? do you believe that the effectiveness of an economic plan has to do with the makeup of the valence shell of electrons? are there economic ions, and how does that affect the equation?

and do the laws of economics change as you increase speed toward the speed of light? do you calculate the force of an economic idea by multiplying the mass of the money involved by the acceleration of that money through the market?

the only thing i can think of that they really have in common is that all three involve math. is that what you meant? i wouldn't really call that a physical law, but i suppose you could if you wanted to.

As usual, you don't understand what the poster meant. Different economic policies will have different effects. The issue is that destructive economic policies will not have positive effects, no matter how much you wish that they did. And, in the long run, you can't escape supply and demand or break the business cycle, which is what our economic policies have tried to do since the New Deal Steal.

I know, FDR was just lucky that the moment he started his New Deal programs, money started falling from the sky.

I think the point that our friend Capitalist1 was trying to make is that certain economic verities endure regardless of what political actions are taken. Things like:

- Tax something, you get less of it
- Subsidize something, you get more of it
- Greed and fear drive the markets
- Gov't can't give anything to anybody without taking it from someone else
- Bad money drives out good money

I'm pretty sure that's not at all the point he was trying to make, and no amount of independent, third-party reasoning can lessen his FAIL.

Not only do you Republicans (I include fark independents here too) want to play chicken with the economy, but you don't take threats against our national security seriously. Why do you hate America?

Why don't you conservatives even let Obama govern? Its like obstruction all the time. When Bush signed the $1.3 trillion tax cuts, 13 Democrats voted for it.

Ayn Rand and Greenspan are on the wrong side of history on this one.

Economics are driven by human behaviour so they have more in common with sociology and psychology than the physical sciences. Sure, economists like to give themselves a veneer of respectability by applying mathematical methods but, when it comes down to it, they're making assertions regarding bulk human behaviour with respect to allocation and distribution of resources.

Also, don't start a sentence with "too". If you must, start it with "also" or "additionally". Starting it with "too" just makes you sound like a fourth grade student.

Stimulus is stimulus whether it be tax cuts or spending. Both stimulate the economy. Just say it, you want Obama to fail, just like your boy, Rush. You want it all your way, bipartisanship be damned.

You can't lose two elections in a row, control about 1/3 of the federal government, and yet get everything you want.

The Bush bill spent not one dime on spending. 100% on tax cuts, yet 13 Democrats voted for it. This bill has 36% on tax cuts, they cut about $100 billion in spending, yet 3 Republican votes in all of Congress. Obstructionism pure and simple.

Also, it seems likes you are willing to see this country slip further into economic decline and be vulnerable to attack to score political points.

Good use of the "obvious" tag.

Oh and, Physics, Chemistry and Economics?
The laws of Chemistry and Physics formulate definitions of our world and are not affected by the whims of man. Economics does have it's share of cute little equations but it is influenced by the whim of man, and at times results are unpredictable.
Hard sciences- predictable. Economics-white collar sorcery.

kuhns_m: Why don't you conservatives even let Obama govern? Its like obstruction all the time. When Bush signed the $1.3 trillion tax cuts, 13 Democrats voted for it.

Because even an idiot Democrat could see that tax cuts were a good idea. On the other hand, no Republican is stupid enough to believe that the "stimulus" plan is anything other than a massive boondoggle.

(Actually, Snowe, Specter, and Collins have announced that they are stupid enough to vote for it. The amount of absolute fail there is incredible: they told the Dems they wouldn't vote for it unless the total cost dropped below $800 billion. So, the Dems strip out the few measures that actually did have any merit, like the new car buyer incentive and the expanded home buyer tax credit. And then these three idiots look at the now even more useless bill and say "yup, looks good to me!").
