Bloody William: Yet another Democrat with tax issues!

Sen. Gregg is a Republican. His replacement would have been picked by the governor of New Hampshire, a Democrat, leading to some speculation that the pick was engineered at least in part to help give the Senate a filibuster-proof Democratic majority.

Except that Gregg only accepted the nomination after Gov. Lynch said he would choose a Republican. He has already announced Gregg's replacement.

Really? I expected that was the reason for the "irreconcilable differences." Well, I wonder who is the 3rd choice. Hey Obama, I'll take it.

Except that a deal had been struck that one of the governor of New Hampshire would appoint a Republican as his replacement. I think that the GOP pressured Gnaibunto dropping out not on policy differences, but because they did not have the resources to fight for his seat in the future with what was likely going to be a weak candidate.

Current projections from the Cook Political Report put three Republican Senate seats in danger in 2010 and no Democratic seats.

My money is on pressure from the GOP leadership.

I should have said "originally led to speculation." I forgot about the deal. I wasn't really following that aspect of the story closely.

But, not accurate. Not at all.

If true, that's disgusting. Way to put your country first, asshat.

Is Vitter one of those? I hear rumblings that Mitch Landrieu - Mary's brother - may go after his seat. I shudder at the thought of two Landrieus, even though I doubt the lobbyist kick-back trough is big enough for two Landrieus.

The 'some damn thing' is moving the census to the West Wing where Obama can manipulate every congressional district and electoral allotment in the US. Add this to the health care electronic monitoring proposal where the Feds will decide what is appropriate treatment for you, and I wouldn't want to be part of it either.

I think it might have something to do with Obama pulling the Census out of Commerce and into the White House. That is the most blatant politically based move he's made so far, without any reasonable explanation other than to give Rhambo an opportunity to favorably redistrict the country for the Dems.

He's a New England Republican. We breed 'em differently up here- just look at Senators Snowe and Collins of Maine, former senator Chafee from Rhode Island, etc. Moderates, willing to compromise and NOT owned by the Christian Right. Or as someone will call them- RINOs.

Romney doesn't count. He's a Michigan carpetbagger who no one likes.

And it appears the Obama people were blindsided. If he had real philosophical issues he couldn't overcome, you'd think he would have let the Obama people take care of the message.

Smells fishy. But I'll reserve judgment for now.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. I guess everyone was assuming the stimulus plan was the issue, but that certainly sounds more likely.

I'll agree with that. Gregg has his own opinions on Census. But still, sloppy handling.

You usually don't resign your seat until you're confirmed.

Vitter is one, along with Martinez (Florida), and Bunning (Kentucky).

Martinez is facing a state that is shifting away from him politically. Bunning is likely retiring and there are no strong GOP candidates to take his place.

GaryPDX: Something is going on. Why would he about face like that?

Possible reasons:

1. Tax issues, or some other dirty laundry.
2. NE is trending Democratic- EVEN NH. Gregg is well respected up there, but the person Gov. Lynch put in his place already said she wouldn't run for reelection. That means the GOP would need to fight for what is currently a safe seat.

I thought as much with Vitter. I can't see Louisiana voting Mitch in with Mary there, though. Besides, this guy recently caused a stir for spending $1 million in state money to redecorate his office and apartment in Baton Rouge.

Writing on the wall... better to quit while you are on top I guess. It will be interesting to see if Charlie Crist tries running for the seat (I give it 50/50 odds, despite what he has said).

I wouldn't worry about Obama, Rahm doesn't want this census thing made public though. This is the one way that the Dems could never be voted out.
