lame. That's a cheap publicity stunt that doesn't actually fix anything. Coming from someone in a position to actually make a difference.

It fixed a lot for a particular family.

Not so much, subby

Hughes's plea has been answered. Chene Thompson, the wife of State Rep. Nick Thompson (R), has offered her former residence to Hughes.

If people actually want to live in Florida there's no way any politician can fix it.

"Basically, I offered Ms. Hughes and her son the opportunity to stay in my home rent free, for as long as they need to," said Thompson.

Somehow, I have the feeling, this isn't going to end well.

So...can I just go to a town hall and complain that I have a shiatty job, and I'll be given something better? Beats the hell out of actually sending out resumes and going on interviews. Boy, am I a chump!

If they really want to help, find a way to make them more homeless.

A homeless woman comes to the Obama rally, and she is granted a home for her family.

And you people deny he is the Savior?

Then maybe I need to take it a step further. See, it's this mentality that "Hey I helped out one family and so if we all just helped out one family then we wouldn't have a homelessness problem" that allows people to delude themselves that problems are best solved through individual acts of charity rather than systemic and, yes, government action. And so millions of people, and children, remain homeless and no one cares because they've all made themselves feel good by dropping a buck into a pickle jar by the cash register somewhere. And it's not from lack of want - don't get me wrong. It's just that there aren't 5 million individuals out there in a position to help to a degree that, say, this guy is. At least not that many that care.

So yeah, I stand by my snark.

It's ok if people are homeless as long as you don't have to look at them or talk to them.

This may, of course, be simply my perception.

You see, true conservative (read not neccessarily republican) values can work. If you refuse to let the federal government take care of everyone, you have to take care of as many as you can personally.

xxysyndrome: and no one cares because they've all made themselves feel good by dropping a buck into a pickle jar by the cash register somewhere.

Where I live there was a big uproar because somebody plucked the bucks out of the pickle jar, went outside, counted the money, then went back inside and bought some stuff. All caught on video. Somehow, I found myself less than outraged. Damn, I suppose I should, but it just won't happen.

Next up, Fox News misinterprets your meaning on "take care of" and opens gas chambers.

Hate to break this to you, you simpleton fark, but when you do it without the risk of imprisonment, it's called charity.

When the risk is imprisonment, then we start getting close to socialism.

the homeless lady at an obama rally who gets interviewed isn't a publicity stunt?

i know it's trendy for liberals to want to help others by using other people's money, but give the guy a break.

and there are TONNNNNS of places where the homeless can stay for free (and no tax burden). there's no excuse for being homeless if you don't want to be.

That is very kind, but... What about all the rest of them?

It really tears me up to say it, but... Obama is playing "magic negro" here.

Corvus 2009-02-11 06:17:18 PM
Here is my deal Charity vs Social Programs.

If I give the money to someone on the street I have no idea if they are really homeless or not.

I also am not helping him to find a job or anything.

If it is a social program at least they do some checks on the person to see if they really need the money. I know they are not perfect but at least it tries to check.

Also they can provide more services to help them get a job.

Also why should I promote people to beg? I would rather not have people begging me for money and giving them money for begging just encourages it.

That's how I see it. I know someone is most likely going to completely flip out on me because they don't agree with my reasoning but I decided to share them anyways in hopes others will understand.

Living in a shelter means you aren't homeless? There's no excuse for being homeless, eh? And yet there they are. By the millions. They must just want to be homeless, I guess. Thanks for the tip, Reagan.

Why is it a bad thing to voice an opinion on how my tax money is spent?

Don't you think it would be stupid to tell conservatives that they want to kill others by using other people's money? Go pay for your own cruise missiles?
