(Paste Magazine) Cool Serge Gainsbourg's "Melody Nelson" to get U.S. release. Question is, do Americans care about a dead, disgruntled chain-smoking French man who was the gutter equivalent of Frank Sinatra?   (pastemagazine.com) divider line 27

I bought this album like 6 months ago in a store in the U.S. (Newbury Comics in Boston). It is fantastic, by the way. It is the rare album that literally everybody could like regardless of what kind of music that person listens to.

/everything else he made is overrated, including his daughter
//now that I think about it, I think it was an import

Pure sex, that album is.

Subby, don't make me sic zombie Gainsbourg on you. Yes, he was ugly, rude, and an alcoholic but the man was a sex god and a great musician. I'm naming my first-born after him.

Histoire de Melody Nelson is one of the EPIC albums of all time.

Also, Frank Sinatra is nowhere near as cool and badass as Serge Gainsbourg. Go sit in the corner with a dunce cap, Subby.

Of all the musicians in the world maybe Serge Gainsbourg is most comparable to Leonard Cohen.

HappyHarryHardOn: and for those who never heard of this, he was very rude to Whitney Houston (new window)

Very rude? He was very forward, perhaps, very French, if you will, to Whitney Houston. Hell, back then I'd have said the same thing.

I would agree with this. Both are great better in small doses. A song here and there on a mix.

"Bonnie and Clyde" comes on the second I walk into any coffee shop and it drives me freaking batty. It's the "Happy Birthday to You" of the sullen and loitering set.

I've had it for so many years that I hadn't realized it wasn't available.

I love the expression of outrage on her face

and for the other poster, I agree. Sinatra is aw'ight but rather humorless and dry. This guy personified cool X10

This American loves Serge. And his daughter is my secret girlfriend.

Ummm, this American cares.

Although his 80s stuff is total caca.

Melody Nelson might just be my favorite album ever.

/that might be evident by my login, though.

I don't care how cool he could potentially be... the Lemon Incest thing is world class creepy.

your handle wins the thread. And I agree with you. This guy is awesome but there is a serious line , somewhere in the 80s, not to cross as far as this guy is concerned. The crappy reggae-pop and cheezy-ass rock n roll... uhgg

Hell, that's nothing. You need to see the movies he made with her when she was 13/14, barging into her bedroom while she slept topless and leering over her.

Then again, yeah, guess you don't need to see that.
