Cue the predictable outrage from those noble patriots still looking around for structures upon which to affix Reagan's name.

Politicians shouldn't have anything named after them until they're dead.

This is stupid. He's been in office for less time that William Henry Harrison.

In 10 years, if he's half as good as I hope he will be, you can name shiat after him. Not now.

Foolish children.

FloydA [TotalFark] 2009-02-11 12:28:55 PM
I have absolutely no doubt that a lot of schools, roads and other things will eventually be named for Obama, and for good reason. No matter what he accomplishes, he is a historical figure. He's the first Black president, and that is historically important and he will be remembered for it, just as it was historically important that GWB was the first mentally handicapped president.

But seriously, kids, give him some time!

It's like getting a tattoo of a band while they are still together- what if they release a sucky album next, then where are you? Wait a while. You can still do that later.

Pocket Ninja: Cue the predictable outrage from those noble patriots still looking around for structures upon which to affix Reagan's name.

My old college roommate got infected with the Reagan Virus so hard I'm not entirely sure he didn't dig up and eat Ronnie's corpse. If he could live in the Reagan Heights development of Reagansburg in Reagan County, Reaganfornia, he'd be happier than a man who just won a million Reagans in the lottery.

And, in this day and age, having high school students showing awareness of civics and the political process to the degree they want to name their school after any leader is a good thing. Yes, even if they were asking for the school to be named after Dubya.

The fact that we're impressed by so little is a bad thing.

Totally agree. I guess it could be worse -- they could be talking about Gossip Girl High School or Pete Wentz Middle School or Rhianna Athletic Complex & Boxing Gym.

Yes, because becoming the first African American president of the United States is clearly the mark of a dismal failure who will fade into history as a faceless, nameless ghost who never accomplished anything with his empty, void-like life.

In that specific case, I'd bet the crappy guitar player was done first, and once he saw that his back would always and forever look incredibly cheap, lame, trashy and stupid no matter what he did, he just decided to go all out.

In that case, it's more like painting your Pontiac Aztec pink, lowering it and adding Yosemite Sam mudflaps and hydraulics. The damned thing is going to look stupid no matter what you do, so you might as well camp it up.

I meant that it is sad that we are so impressed by children wanting to rename their school. Like it's such a huge achievement and shows that they are paying so much attention to current events. Not that it's bad to be impressed by Obama.

gustakooka: I think he meant "be impressed by the students".

I suppose that is a possibility. But I think it is notable when high school students, so notoriously apathetic, take this sort of initiative. The group in question seems like they've been pretty active in the past as well.

It'd make it more appropriate to need a hall pass to go to the bathroom also.

The history won't be determined today. It will be determined in either 4 or 8 years. Getting in the cockpit isn't good history if you can't fly the plane. Either he'll do a great job and get marked in history, or he'll totally fark it up and then racists abound will come out of the woodwork and say, "SEE??? We tried to tell you!"

Thus, in summary, becoming the first African-American President of the United States could, in fact, be the mark of a dismal failure as easily as it could be a glorious achievement.

Frankly, at this point, I have no idea which way it's going to go. I don't giggle and clap when I hear the words "change" or "hope" so his speeches didn't do much for me, and I can't tell where else he put any bank. All I know is that he has pretty speeches and he's not so hot without them. As for his Presidency, he hasn't really had any time yet, so I'll just wait and see.

I'm just hoping he doesn't screw it all up, because he's either going to pave the road for future ethnic Presidents... or he's going to set it back another few decades. Future black candidates would have to campaign, "I promise you I'm not like Obama" as the nation continues to identify everyone by skin color. Kinda sucks, but your skin really is more like a team jersey around here.

Yeah that was my exact point. He's great when he can write his stuff ahead of time. Not so great when he has to conjure it hot.

It's fine to be aware of the historical significance of being the first black President. However, I wouldn't say that warrants naming a school after him three weeks in to the term.

I mean, christ...he hasn't even condemned the christians and forced the conservatives in to those big re-education camps in Wyoming.

To be fair, setting up that many mandatory gay marriage assignments isn't something that can happen overnight. The catering alone is more challenging than D-Day.

I still refuse to call Washington National Airport "Reagan National." George Washington wasn't good enough for the cons?

That's what happens when a person thinks through what they're going to say before they say it. You're probably not used to a President bothering with it.

A part of me wants him to be a totally incompetent president, magnitudes worse than Bush, just to teach all these renamers a lesson.
