FTFA: As impressive as M.I.A. was at the Grammys

I don't find hot air balloons covered with polkadots doing a terrible remix "impressive".

She's no more an active terrorist than Sid Vicious and Siouxie Sioux were Nazis by wearing Swastikas on their clothes back in the 70s

seems a tribute to her dad more than anything

I had the misfortune of seeing her "perform" in Austin one day.

Stupid skank wriggled around yelling into a microphone and doing drugs on stage while a DJ did all the work for 2 hours.

I slagged MIA in a post the other day because I'd mixed 'er up with somebody else.

In fact, I've enjoyed what I've heard, surprisingly.

I think the fact that the nazis were out of business when Sid did it and that his father was not an active member of the Nazi Party pretty much makes your comparison useless.

I think the way it works is that BECAUSE she's sri lankan, any use of a tiger is immediately evocative of the Tamil Tigers.

Where as, anyone from the subcontinent of India using a tiger it is assumed they are just being nationalistic (unless they go out of their way to say "no, this is Tony the Tiger. FROSTED FLAKES, MOTHERFOOFER!!"

Yeah, I saw her at Summer Stage in Central Park. Same thing. Worst live show I've been to.

Is there any reason why she's so hyped up? I downloaded both her albums to see what the fuss was all about and barely heard any real rapping. Just some kinda cute chick sometimes spewing potential catchphrases that hipsters might quote and not much else. Where did the hype come from? A really good PR rep?

Good song.

But if a black American sang it, Bill O'Reilly and all the other panty-wadders would be up in arms saying it is bad image for black America.

Possibly, but BO'R probably thinks she's Mexican.

His complete list:
Americans (all white people besides below)
French/Californians
Mexicans
Blacks

No one's ever shown him an Asian yet, he'd fall down and hurt himself.

I kinda like her music and I had never heard any buzz when I heard it playing in a car I was riding in. There were a few good songs for the dance floor on the album. It's refreshing to hear a new take on an old genre. Like most rappers, she's atrocious live. I think the popularity is in large part because Paper Planes was featured in a craptastic movie the kids seem to love. I think it was the one about teenage pregnancy...Juno or Garden State or something.

I didn't see the Grammy's and I wouldn't know a Mia song if one hit me in the face. But I can't help but think I have absolutely nothing in common with a person that would go out in public dressed like this.

That was hilariously awesome of her. She's just being obnoxious and having fun.

It's so silly, it hardly seems anything to get worked up over.

I am not a fan of MIA's music - it's just not my kinda thing.
But that dress she wore to the Grammys was farking awesome. She made being pregnant look cool - she was ready to burst (the show was her due date) and still running around on stage and singing with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, TI and Kanye.

Also, I do not see the big deal about her supposed terrorist connections. I'm good friends with a Tamil girl whose family is directly involved with The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
And my band has played shows where the money we made was given to my friend to donate to the Tigers...
So I guess I have actually directly funded terrorism.
Hooray!

Detecting sarcasm is not your strong suit...
I actually don't care about the conflict at all. My friend was raising money for something, I helped out. I don't care if that money went to pay for bombs.
I am Mr. Apathy and your attempt to shame me has failed.

Dude... dude... dude...

The internet isn't as anonymous as you think it is. I'm pretty sure that the American government doesn't look too kindly on people who fund terrorists these days.

As well as they shouldn't. Seriously dude, being apathetic isn't cool, no matter how much Kurt Cobain told you differently. Money that you raised may have gone to help kill innocent people- and that isn't hip (even if apathy is).

Oh, and we're all all right!
