What does the mayor of Tampa say?

kronicfeld [TotalFark] 2009-02-11 09:23:59 AM
You don't put ALL your bailout cash on red, silly. You put like 5% of it on red, and then if you lose, you just double each successive bet until you win. It's foolproof!

lajimi [TotalFark] 2009-02-11 09:31:01 AM
Mr. Obama said, "You are not going to be able to give out these big bonuses until you pay taxpayers back. You can't get corporate jets. You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime.

.....And what, exactly, should he apologize for? I'm sure that the mayor of the biggest open sewer (that I personally LOVE) in the country would like to have taxpayer dollars thrown away in his city but maybe the people who provide that money would object. They can spend their own money as they see fit but keep CLOSE tabs on the bailout funds.

Obama said "on the taxpayers' dime". He never said anything against someone spending their own money at Vegas.

It's rare that I find the "non-apology apology" acceptable.

I think it's more a matter of misguided "any publicity is good publicity."

Mr. Mayor...

You'll just have to wait for the 'stimulus' to come out of conference to see what you MIGHT get if you're a good boy just like everyone else. Only Washington can dictate what you get, when you get it, and how much of it you can have.

Yes, DIA, that *IS* how laws are made. In Washington. By Congress.

This. Oscar Goodman is a fascinating fellow but he's being ridiculous here. I promise I'll go to Vegas as soon as I can get some time off, ok Oscar?

Obama derangement syndrome. Even a screwy mayor of Las Vegas gets apologists when taking on The Obama.

Why shouldn't politicians get tax dollars to go to Las Vegas says Anson.

You're missing the point here, which is that Obama did something and that it needs to be complained about.

Wouldn't letting a company spend taxpayer money in Vegas (which would go to hotels and restaurants that employ people) be, well, stimulus type stuff? And so good for the economy.

I was told that spending money all over the place was stimulus, and that's what this looks like too. Should be good for the economy. Or is it only good when the government spends money randomly?

Bailout != stimulus package. When are right-wingers going to get this straight? You'd think that with all the time they spend complaining about it they'd at least have figured out what the basics of the two plans are.

Jesus tap dancing Christ on a Segway...

He was making the point that businesses have to use the money that they're getting via the taxpayers wisely, not on frivolous trips to Vegas and trips to the Super Bowl.

Yeah Mr. Mayor, he singled your city out. Because if there is ANY American city that nobody ever needs to visit, it is yours. No place on earth is as starkly depressing as your town, having all the authenticity of a burrito from Taco Bell. I've had to attend quite a few trade shows in your silicone titty of a city, getting the runs from your salmonella laden buffets - which are like everything else in Vegas - only barely attractive until the first bite.

You cater to all that is vile and stupid in the American Character. A magnet for losers and winners who should be losers. Here's to hoping that the pile of neon encrusted shiat you call a town burns to the ground, the environmental impact of all that silicone and MSG going up at once be damned. The mob and the drug cartels will just have to find somewhere else to launder their monies, and you'll have to find some other way to fleece the stupid with rigged games and bright lights. A million times, fark you.

I've practiced that with a consecutive coin tosses. Even w/o the 0 and 00 (green) you'd better have a lot more than 95% to cover.

Are we really sure about that....do the leaders who crafted the bill really measure what happens in the market or to the economic recovery as success?.....or is it a way to increase thier own power? Is it going to be measured in how it shaped democrats political considerations ....??

It's more about Democrats wish lists...than the countries overall economic needs.

Since he's the mayor I'm going with - DEFINATELY free publicity.

Though, in any given population there will be some percentage of people who react stupidly to any given thing.

Reporter Tom Sherwood with NBC (IIRC) here was complaining and saying that Obama owed us here in DC an apology for his recent joke about DC being wimpy for closing schools from a little ice and 1" of snow... because DC schools were open and some of the suburban schools surrounding DC were the ones who closed and he should know the difference. I was like, "Dude, seriously? It was a farking joke - and as tame as they come at that."

The problem here is one of perception. Sure he said "on the taxpayer's dime".... but any organization looking to stay out of the spotlight, potential spotlight, a future spotlight, will think of making other arrangements.

Like it or not, for good or for bad, the statement will impact legitimate travel to Las Vegas.

absolutely. Are you aware of how many national and international conferences and events put Vegas into their rotation? Vegas employs a whole slough of people in figuring out ways to keep that mechanism well-oiled. And they all cringed, I am sure, at Obama basically saying "be warned. To me, Vegas as a travel destination is already a mark against my perception of your company."

Well, right or wrong, he may want to apologize. After all, we all remember what happened to the LAST wildly charismatic president who pissed off a powerful mob figure.

One of my friends goes to LV. He recently told me that his company cut back expense accounts pretty badly. He said "now we can't go to all the high end sushi places each night when we're out there."

If a company shows the handlers their expense listing, and they keep it reasonable, there will probably be no trouble.

They'll just have to pay for hookers and blow on their personal cards.

Shut up mayor! How else are we going to get your hookers down to buy on get three free? Huh? Besides the economic crash has only improved the quality of hookers available to the average consumer like me, I mean it used to be if I wanted two 16 year olds I had to buy second hand from a shady character, but now I can buy directly from the source, their mother. God bless the Republicans.

You call the budget shots for a medium-sized business. You were leaning toward Vegas or San Jose for your Western Region's gathering. Sure easy to recommend San Jose to the board now!

Telling you people, this will impact a lot of decisions. Vegas is righfully disturbed by the offhand, insensitive, naive remark.
