props to anyone even attempting to cover Captain Beefheart. A cookie to them if it sounds even remotely halfway there. (however "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles"is not the most challenging of Beefheart stuff... the day I hear a cover of anything from "Trout Mask"is the day you'll see me impressed)

And Flaming Lips doing "Borderline"? Id love a link, but its nowhere on Youtube

As a Neil Young devotee, I heard Letterman introduce Sandler covering Neil and had a major WTF mental outburst. Honestly, he did okay on "Like a Hurricane" did it seriously.

I'm listening to this and asking why is this a travesty? He's really trying, and he's not doing badly. It sounds like he even worked on the vocal warble.

Against Me! has already done a good job of covering the replacements on their tribute album, We'll inherit the Earth. They did Bastards of Young justice, I'm sure they can do Here Comes a Regular.

The rest of the album looks bad.

compared to Celine doing "you shook me all night long" this is farking great!

Flaming Lips did a version of Kylie's 'can't get you out of my head' that was pretty damn good, as well.

1) I want a copy of this, where can I find it?

and

B) is that that POS Waddy Wachtel playing lead?

And a version of "Seven Nation Army," provided you can call a song a cover if the lyrics have been completely rewritten.

1)here (new window), or I could send an mp3 of a far superior version.

as for B) yeah, that's Wachtel alright.

Presumably mfaby is referring to Wachtel's arrest for kiddie porn several years ago. Never heard what came of that.

I don't think either this or the Young cover are great, but if you didn't know it was Sandler you wouldn't write it off as horrible

When you're rich and famous, you get to sing karaoke on Letterman.

Adam Sandler has a similar tone to Neil Young, and is obviously a big fan of his work. And after seeing him with the Deftones, I don't doubt his musical talents. Props to him. Good cover.

God forbid the guy does something other than what you'd expect.

I would have liked that a lot it it weren't quite so pitchy. Decent J. Mascis/Neil Young tone to his voice.

It made me curl up in fetal position and hide in a corner for days, praying the horror would just stop.

/doesn't like many covers

It says in the article that it's the Black Keys doing Bee Fart. I need to know the truth, it makes a big difference.

deevo 2009-02-11 11:31:36 AM
Every time I see Against Me!, I want to shout for Bastards Of Young, but I usually dislike people who call out songs at bands between every farking song, and I'm not sure if it's even more offputting to demand a cover. And every single Against Me! song done live is farking awesome anyway so it doesn't matter.

also new Black Keys album is better than expected

deevo 2009-02-11 11:35:32 AM
also the new Black Lips album is even better than the new Black Keys album

it's been a good week for the Internet

sotua 2009-02-11 12:46:30 PM
Even though I can't stand more than a song or two from them, Disturbed made a pretty decent cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion". It helps that the keyboard bass in the original sounds very well as a palm-muted distorted guitar and the lead vocal guy does a very good impression of an evil Phil Collins.

/no, I didn't think of Pearl Jam's "Do the evolution" when I saw that video
//at all

Too much like the original, comes out kind of bland... and the bass needs to be louder :)

/yes, I said the bass
//Billy Gould is a farking genius for making basically a single note in steady 8ths bass line that is completely essential to the song

I saw Sandler on Letterman, he was actually pretty good.

Probably sang in key better than Neil usually does.

I remember learning to play bass playing along with FNM songs and thinking "this is easy." Not that all their songs are quite that simple, but a lot of the funky bass lines are simple. A big part of his prominence in the songs is his tone and the mix.
