Thanx to Ry Cooder for getting these guys down on tape. One of the baddest groups of musicians. EVAR.

Saw them in Havana a few years back...amazing group...some of my best memories of the place.

It's the Cooder Curse, I tells ya! All those ancient Cuban musicians participate in a single recording session, and over a period of several years, they all eventually die!

In high school my spanish teacher took a small group of us to see the Buena Vista Social club in Providence. One of the original memeber came out, sang a song, and was even dancing around. The guy was in his 90's at the time if I remember correctly.

Awesome show, great movie, and an amazing body of work.

RIP

That would probably be Compay Segundo. Ibrahim Ferrer was the other crusty singer-type, but he was younger, and both are dead now.

A string bassist as opposed to a bassist that plays a bass that has no strings?

/bassist

I was in Barcelona the summer of 2005, and I saw a poster for a concert with Ibrahim Ferrer being advertised. I figured it would be ridiculously expensive and there would always be another time.
Well, a few weeks later, I was reading the paper in England and saw his obituary. That was his last European tour, he died a bit after returning home. Man, I was pissed.

It is kind of depressing that they are all dying off one by one, hopefully there will be a next generation to pick up where they left off.

I worked at a bar that played that soundtrack every day. If you've ever worked somewhere that plays a set, the last thing in the world you'll want to hear at the house is the same set. But not these guys, or even that exact album. Really evocative stuff. Still listen to it at least once a week.

Yeah, about that.

Well, it turns out there was no such thing as the BVSC and a lot of the players didn't know each other before Ry - that cultural gold digger - brought them together.

How do I know? I read it an interview he gave when the movie came out.

And Cachao only died about a year ago, too. Very sad.

Was anyone else pissed off about Joachim Cooder playing drums in BVSC? (since he had no rhythm, feel, or fire?)
