"Beth Terry has been making homemade mustard. Not because it tastes better - although maybe it does. She didn't want to buy it anymore because she could find her favorite kind only in plastic jars."

While I'm sure they're many reasons why her plan should be labeled "FAIL" - I could not read past this first set of sentences. Their are many mustards in glass jars at most grocery stores.

Not only that, but who is holding the gun to her head that says she can't recycle the plastic bottle when done?

Last I checked, plastic is recyclable.

Giving it up doesn't eliminate it from the world. It already exists.

If she really wanted to be environmentally friendly she would buy MORE plastic and then stockpile it in her garage so it couldn't end up in the ocean.

Plastic is also a biatch to recycle, environmentally and not too cost effective. same as paper. sadly, the only materials that actually work out to be more envio-friendly and cost effective are metals.

Most plastic can be recycled. And making mustard really isn't that difficult.

At our cheap ass local grocery store (everything is rotting, but it's cheap) they have two "do-it-yourself" recycle bins. Place plastic in the plastic machine, receive some money. Easy as pie.

TFA: She didn't want to buy it anymore because she could find her favorite kind only in plastic jars.

Why didn't she switch bands rather than go through the "hardship" of making her own?

TFA: She switched from liquid soap - another plastic container! - to bar.

I refill the plastic bottle, thus not "disposing" of it.

TFA: OK, not the computer monitor and the telephone...

OK, so she's an attention whore with a martyr complex.

The thing that turns people off about people like this is it is clear they are more obsessed than they are thoughtful.

I mean, my wife and I use canvas grocery bags, recycle probably 95 percent of the plastic, metal and glass we get from the store and re-use cheapo-plastic containers for our kids lunches, etc.

But someone who actually carries a glass straw around in their purse to use at restaurants just inspires an impulse in me to punch her in the ovaries.

I couldn't finish the article. It made plastic out to be some evil. She's worried about bad chemicals getting into her food from the plastic container they are in?

OK, plastic is everywhere because it's an incredibly wonderful material to make shiat out of! Yes, plastic ending up in giant garbage patches in the oceans is certainly a problem, and one we should probably try to remedy, but abandoning plastic is not the answer.

azpenguin 2009-02-10 03:26:56 PM
Had to make a run to the dump to get rid of yard clippings a while back. The amount of plastic bags fluttering around out there is astounding. They've had to build 30-foot high nets around the dumping areas just to keep the plastic grocery bags from flying out every time the wind kicks up. That trip was enough to get me to start using the reusable bags.

How does it make your life worse? And before you say something like "because I hate plastic bags all over the place" remember that that's a result of human laziness, not plastic.

DoWhatNowToWhat: Just save your plastic grocery bags for one month and then you begin to understand the amount of waste you are producing.

I've been saving my plastic & paper grocery bags for the past 3 years (since we moved into our apartment). My wife and I use the plastic ones as garbage bags for the car and to put meat/food waste in before placing it in the regular garbage can.

The paper bags are really stacking up, but I figure they'll be good packing material when we move eventually. They're also great to tear up and use to start campfires and charcoal grills (I hate lighter fluid-tasting food).

Rapmaster2000: This is a nice sentiment and all, but most of that trash in the gyre is from a lack of proper disposal in the developing world.

Most of the trash in the gyre is due to the fact that oceanic currents flow INTO the gyre but not OUT, thus making it more of a problem of physics than plastic.

Which is not to say it's not a gigantic problem, but has very little to do with use of plastics per se.

If you feel that down about using plastic just recycle the stuff.

Yeah, I understand it doesn't eliminate the raw material use, but it certainly cuts back on what materials have to be used in the future.

we recycle every piece of plastic from #1-#7 at our local facility, most recycling centers take at least #1 and #2.

I'm not calling you out for this by any means, since just about everybody does this. But this is the primary reason why only 5% of plastic bags ever get recycled.

I use the canvas bags. They're sturdier, and they hold a hell of a lot more groceries per bag. You're better off using regular garbage bags for the trash, because they are more biodegradable than than the plastic grocery variety.

There have been some claims of using microwaves to turn plastics and rubber back into oil. Tires seem to be the first target.
