It's a valid line of inquiry. This isn't Futurama we're talking about, it's THE SIMPSONS!!

"I'm confused, because whenever I watch The Simpsons they're very rude about the Grammys. It's hard to know how important they are," he said.

Thom, your idol Elvis Costello once lost best new artist to A Taste of Honey. What does that tell you??

The self-serving recording industry fellating itself in an "awards" ceremony is somehow lacking in validity? The hell you say.

Lil' Wayne and Milli Vanilli have more Grammy Awards than Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Diana Ross, and the The Who. Combined. That's all you need to know about the Grammys.

I was so looking forward to someone telling me what I should be listening to.

Oh yeah the Grammys. Pointless.

Grammy? Pffft. I'd much rather win the Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence.

I don't watch the Grammys, so I don't know, but why were albums released in 2007 given awards following the 2008 calendar year? Raising Sand came out in October of 2007, same as In Rainbows. Was that just too late for ballots?

Never mind. I used the awesome power of the internets. Eligibility runs from Oct. 1st to Sept. 30th. Just seems that in this day and age they could change that to run from Jan. 1st to Dec. 31st.

I was confused about that for MIA, but then I realized that while the album was ineligible, a single from the album was eligible.

I'm sure it was good, but in a lot of ways the Grammys "pays back" artists for earlier success. It took "Tears in Heaven" for Clapton to get a Grammy.

I don't know, I never thought Zeppelin deserved a Grammy any more than Jethro Tull did. I've got eclectic music tastes, to say the least, but when you look at what Plant and Krauss were up against this year...well, there wasn't a lot of choice.
I always felt that Steely Dan--whose entire catalog I celebrate, mind you--didn't deserve their Grammy; Eminem did (and I hate Eminem with a passion).
So, yes, the Grammy Awards are a broken institution, just like the Oscars.

Al Jean has said one reason they rip on the Grammys so much is that it's an award they think they'll never be up to win anyway.

Hmmmm, I'm kind of uncomfortable with comparing Zeppelin to Jethro Tull, but I understand what you mean. They are a broken institution. I'd love to find some way to get a Grammy to the Pixies for influencing pretty much everybody, but you never know who will be influential and who won't. I'm sure there's some kickass band somewhere that will influence everyone in 10 years but I haven't heard it.

Grab a copy of "A Rush Of Blood To The Head". Their other stuff is hit or miss but it's hard to deny it's a great album. There's a lot of music out there and no real reason to be stubborn is refuse to listen to it. I stopped only listening to one narrow field of music a long time ago and usually look forward to award shows or people's best of lists to find new stuff.

It's not like I refuse. I've never heard it on the radio, I've never heard it at a bar... I just haven't heard it and I've never really been curious until today. Maybe they sneak it into movies and TV.

They get a lot of crap because most of their songs are incredibly boring (to many of us, I should say), but yeah, they've had a few great songs. "Yellow," their breakout hit, was pretty spectacular.

Back on topic, music is incredibly subjective and any attempt at judging a year of it in one night and handing out little trophies is ridiculous. Motherfark a grammy.

Ishkur 2009-02-10 04:03:06 PM
For those wondering when the Grammies went downhill, just remember, the very first award winner for Best Single was........Alvin & The Chipmunks.

In other words, it's always been this bad. The Grammies handing out awards to irrelevant flash-in-the-pan acts and giving makeup accolades to 8-year old albums that took a few years to gain steam is basically what they do.

CatJumpJohn 2009-02-10 04:08:28 PM
Here's a treat: Harry Nilsson and Ringo Starr presenting an award at the Grammy's. Rather than read what they were supposed to read, they decided that they'd both read from script simultaneously. Hilarity ensued.

Coldplay was good, but now they seem to be just recreating their first two albums over and over again.

Ant: Coldplay was good, but now they seem to be just recreating their first two albums over and over again.

This to me is what makes Radiohead so different form Coldplay (and most other bands, for that matter).

Coldplay does seem to be making the same album each time, and Radiohead continually reinvents itself (and in turn the artists around them) with each album.

Their career and what their effect on music remind me a lot of the Beatles from Rubber Soul on.
