He was robbed of the Oscar for his performance in Tougher Than Leather.

this guy is a terrible producer. if you can actually HEAR what's going on, whether its great or awful, if you can actually make out the sound through all the snow and ogre jizz Rick Rubin mixed in to the newest Metallica album...well, thats spiffy, but Rubin still sucks the big one.

Reign In Blood begs to differ with you.

Isn't he the one responsible for unleashing the onslaught of boy bands upon an unwitting public, or am I thinking of someone else?

That is unfair. Nivek was nowhere near those studios!

Deloused in the Comatorium remains one of the greatest albums of all time.

...nope, the name I was thinking of is Lou Pearlman.

Nah, Rubin was the one who unleashed the Beastie Boys on an unwitting public.

Although the Dust Brothers is with whom they redeemed themselves and placed them in the pantheon of great musical gods.

This seems to balance out. He makes money as a producer and loses money as an executive. Oohhhmmmmmmmmmm.

Rubin is a great producer. He has an uncanny ability to get artists to go to a completely different place with their music and have it be good. See: the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond...

not surprising at all

having worked in NYC as an engineer late 80's and 90's - there quite aot of stories like this -

sometimes is hard to say who is working for who via under table deals ...

I noticed that the drumming on Master Of Puppets, although really fitting for the album - isn't really any different (as far as skill level) compared to Death Magnetic.

But the drum sound on MOP is awesome. The simplest little snare fill has power, where as the simplest snare fill on DM sounds weak. I think there are a lot of good songs on DM, I just don't get why Rick Rubin would produce the drums in such a shiatty way...

I think Rubin was trying to auditorally (not a word) reflect Lars' inner gayness.

Got drunk with Lars years ago. He's a little guy, maybe he needed a little sound.

Slayer
Danzig
RHCP
System of a Down
Johnny Cash
Neil Diamond

Metallica

What other producer has that eclectic a resume?

Can't remember the guys name (worked for Warner Bros., I believe), but he produced Van Halen and Captain Beefheart in the same year. That had to confuse him.

Well, now, you see Rickie's really, REALLY into Zen Buddism and
consequently thinks in the end, everything balances out. So making his own money with side jobs for other companies (how this was allowed by Sony/Columbian is one of the biggest fark ups ever!)
and allowing Columbia to lose money means everything is copaesidic.

Columbia needs to fire him, pronto.

Neil Diamond's last two records have been great. Rubin has his moments.
/and the Metallica sound problems were mostly due to the mastering

Seems like you are basing your opinion of his entire career on the sound quality of one record. Maybe it was his fault, maybe it was Metallica's, maybe it was the engineer's. Metallica has a history of mixing things poorly, maybe they wanted it this way.

Even if you are judging his career solely on this one album though, there is more to being a producer than sound quality. When I compare this album to Metallica's other late-career work, I consider it to be an huge improvement so I am willing to give Rubin the benefit of the doubt on the sound quality.
