Pearls Before Swine is OK, but like I told my local paper 2,837 times in the last survey, Beetle Bailey, Marmaduke, Hi & Lois and For Better Or For Worse bring teh funnay every day.

Any newspaper that doesn't have Get Fuzzy sucks ass. Boondocks also rocks. I really miss Bloom County and Calvin & Hobbs.

Get Fuzzy is the last funny newspaper strip. Humor, satire, and quality are now almost exclusively an internet quality.

Get Fuzzy, Dilbert, and Pearls Before Swine. Always awesome.

Although I read them online, personally.

I dig F-Minus. That's about all I read.

And Dilbert. Oh, Dilbert, will you ever win?

People still read comics in newspapers? Seriously? Unless they start to carry things along the lines of Cyanide and Happiness, I'll just stick to the internet, thanks.

Non-internet comic strips are painfully unfunny. Painfully.

Not everyone is 20. For a lot of older people, it's a reassuring continuity to their lives.

(Not including XKCD and C&H).

Don't hold your breath. I don't know of many any internet comics that would be suitable for a minor audience.

Rhymes with Orange has got to be the worst strip on the planet. I'm still perplexed how an artist with the skill of a 3rd grader and the wit of a coconut can make a living penning such drivel.

In the Knoxville (TN) News Sentinel, Boondocks and Doonesbury consistently gets the most "drop it" votes every time one of those type polls is done, but the paper keeps those two comics, defeating the purpose of asking people "what copmics should we get rid of" to start with

Cyanide and Happiness, Abstruse Goose, and a few others are just not funny in my opinion. Most of these things hit the front page of Digg on a daily basis and have a throng of nerdy fanboy comments so that makes me somewhat biased against them.

I'll admit that XKCD sometimes gets a chuckle, but Penny Arcade has been rather weak lately. I find most of the comments from certain people on Fark to be more amusing.

Just sayin'.

Pearls Before Swine is far better than any number of legacy comics you'll find on the funny pages.

And sure, bring back Calvin and Hobbes, but only the funny, touching, well-written pre-sabbatical strips, not the annoying, sanctimonious, screechy post-sabbatical strips.

Picking up today's Sunday comics insert, I see that perhaps 1/10 of them are based on that archaic writing technique called "having a joke." Sally Forth needs to stop sallying and forthing immediately.

Pearls Before Swine is probably the funniest comic in actual newspapers. Doonesbury is also good. That said, the overall quality of newspaper comics is quite low, and the only nerd-friendly print comic (Foxtrot) is sadly no longer a daily strip.

Comics that are not funny or even interesting and I wish death on the people who continue to milk profits from their long-unfunny corpses:
BC
Wizard of ID
Marmaduke
Snuffy Smith
Garfield
Heathcliff
Blondie
Hagar the Horrible
Cleats
Crankshaft
Funky Winkerbean (though we all love the all-cancer all the time trainwreck, right?)
Nancy
Ziggy
Mallard Fillmore

Strips that I read or at least tolerate:
Rose is Rose
Rhymes with Orange
Dilbert
Get Fuzzy
Bizarro
Pearls Before Swine
Sally Forth (yes, ordinarily it's awful, but I have a cut-out copy of a strip from about 10 years ago that makes it abundantly clear that the husband is coming up for air after teh oral and some credit must be given there).
Zits
Doonesbury
Zippy the Pinhead
Tom Tomorrow
Red Meat
The K Chronicles

Strips I miss very much:
Calvin and Hobbes
Opus
Citizen Dog
The Far Side

Webcomic I love:
XKCD
Achewood
Cyanide and Happiness
Perry Bible Fellowship
Girls with Slingshots
The Devil's Panties
Schlock Mercenary
tiny ghosts

Are you familiar with the comic "Frazz"? It's a lot like if you imagined "what happened when Calvin grew up." The guy's even got the same hairstyle. Not quite the same (I don't know that anything can match Calvin & Hobbes), but some of the same style and humor.

My local paper runs a lot of comics that need to be kicked out, and ran a poll wanting a replacement for For Better or For Worse. I was pissed as hell because they weren't offering Lio.

I can't recall what show I was watching ... it was years ago, but there was an exchange like this:

B: Well, let me catch you up. It's later the same week...

Try out Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (new window) or Amazing Super Powers (new window)

They're both consistently awesome, and the artwork is better than most other internet cartoons as well.

Isn't it though? I just know there are a lot of old people that read the paper to have peace of mind, and the generic ritual of Mark Trail or the Lockhorns is the only thing keeping them from putting a bullet in their brains.

Checked out Sinfest? Love that webcomic. As for your seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of what is currently in newspapers, you frighten me.

Fact Man 2009-02-08 10:30:19 PM
As a comic strip artist, I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Comics suck because of old people.

Familiarity is the foundation of the crap in the newspapers today. You can't get rid of Marmaduke, because the 60+ crowd across the country will write to editors (paper mail) threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

New comic artists have little room to fit in when none of the old ones will leave.

Demographics are also the reason you see 1/3rd of the crap in the papers. How many craptastic comics are there because they feature an old person or an ethnicity? Many. Simply because they cater to a demographic.

/don't get me started.

This is sooooo embarrassing to admit, but I know what show it was: Golden Girls.

Here's the exchange...

Dorothy: What's so funny?
Blanche: Oh, Marmaduke. Look at how he drives that car. Ha ha ha! I love my comics. Every day, Marmaduke and Apt. 3G.
Dorothy: I haven't read Apt. 3G since... 1961.
Blanche: Oh, well let me catch you up. It is later the same day

It is a continued source of wonder to me how "Mallard Fillmore" manages to stay in papers.

I have no problem with conservative comics, but for Christ's sake, man... at least put SOME effort into it!

TribeFan695 2009-02-08 10:31:11 PM
Who actually thinks Garfield, Marmaduke, Family Circus, or Dennis the Menace are funny? I don't understand how those comics remain so popular. I also hate those stupid dramatic comics like Judge Parker and Rex Morgan that take a month to complete a storyline.
