I'm the leftiest lefty who ever hefted a protest sign, and I think the war in Afghanistan was necessary. It was mismanaged from almost the get go, but that's not the fault of the guy with the dogs.

Oh how soon we forget Jessica Lynch.

Maybe it doesn't bother you that the Pentagon spends over half a billion dollars a year spinning the American public, but hey to each his own. Me personally, I don't feel that the military having its own motives other than following their mission works out too well.

For reference see: WWII Germany, WWII Japan, Egypt, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Nigeria, Burma, Haiti, Thailand, Phillipines, Ivory Coast, Gamiba, Georgia... the list goes on and on.

The military shouldn't spend a single cent to influence public debate or opinion at home. Leave that to the politicians. They should instead just follow their mission, the one laid out for them by the President and Congress, who are answerable to the public at the polls.

I can't imagine that there would be a single rational adult who wouldn't be automatically distrustful of any public relations spin attempt by the military, but evidently some people don't even blink at this shiat. They probably buy Snuggies and Sham-Wow's too; It's a sad state of affairs in America these days.

Dude, it's a heartwarming story about dogs and a kindhearted soldier.

My nephew is being deployed to Afghanistan next month and my niece may be redeployed after two tours in Iraq, so I'm as angry as the next person, but man - channel that rage into some useful action and just wallow in the puppy love here and now.

The problem is that your very reasonable and respectable pro-family feelings are being counted on and used by people who don't give a shiat about your family or about dogs. The dog thing is propaganda.

It's good to be skeptical. But it's more important to be able to differentiate between facts and BS. And one must be able to do this all the time, for each individual incident.

"Slack-jawed credulity" is as useless as "reflexive disbelief."

"Discerning" is what one should shoot for if one wishes for an accurate view of reality.

So the right thing to do would have been to what - let the dogs starve to make a point?

You know what? I can get enough bitterness and raging against the machine at work from people who don't do a goddamned farking thing but fellate themselves with moral superiority while not lifting a finger to affect any real change. I'm *really* not looking for more of the same in a blessed dog thread, but thanks for your kind efforts at pissing in everyone's Cheerios.

The pentagon spent $1.2 billion importing dogs to Afghanistan, just so it could show soldiers saving a few of them when they weren't bombing villages to build a pipeline.

And you sheep fell for it.

And yet you can't field a rational counterpoint to his valid argument. Methinks you need to switch from Fox News to MSNBC. I'd recommend something like the BBC or CBC for a different take on world events, however you'd probably throw poo at the screen after having an aneurysm.

The fact of the matter is that this is either concrete evidence of governmental bloat on an epic scale, and they are probably using that accounting classification to pay spies and other people trying to destroy the constitution. Either way, our money is being wasted at an astronomical rate.
