There we go, a solution to the Gitmo problem. And to think, we could have just given all of them pen and paper, asked them to write down everything they felt we should know, and promise to be good.

They can hook up with 420 released by Bush from Gitmo, 61 of whom are back to killing innocent people*

*Number pulled out of Cheney's ass

I wouldn't be surprised if 61 fully formed terrorists could be pulled out of Cheney's ass. I just don't put stuff past him anymore.

That is hilarious.

And by "hilarious," I mean "terrifying."

Did they swear in on a Koran like Obama did?

Seriously tho while Islamic tradition encourages Muslims to lie to non-Muslims I'd trust Muslims swearing off jihad with an oath to another Muslim (of the same theological school) along with a promise from his clan leaders. Arab culture has no concept of individuality; whatever these tribal elders says goes.

Guh, I miss Bush already. Remember how awesome it would be when terrorists would run around and kill Americans, and we could always count on him to not do anything?

/Osama Bin Laden unavailable for comment...oh wait, yes he is. Because he never got caught.
//Seattle Jewish Federation sniper, anthrax mailer and beltway sniper don't count as terrorists.
///Now that that's established, I'm so grateful that not even ONE terrorist was successful thanks to Bush and the GOP!

I seem to remember reading an article on this that claimed an extremely low recidivism rate.

Most of these folks are ignorant bumpkins with no education (think rural Alabama ;-) and a little education on what the Koran actually says from a decent cleric can do a lot to eliminate their radicalism.

Making their tribal leaders responsible for their behaviour once released helps, too.

Was that article in the Daily KOS? There are even more poorly educated people in NYC also.

Well, if their wasn't enough evidence to convict them of anything, they should be free to go. Hunches are no basis for imprisonment.

Undiluted Seattle Jewish Federation sniper

This was due to mental illness as well as hatred. Naveed Afzal Haq is Pakistani, but hadn't been in a mosque in about a decade and even converted to Christianity at one point. Although he did attend his parents' Mosque a couple of weeks before the attack.

He did hate Jews and that was a prime motivator for his crime, but he also has an extensive history of mental illness. Current events (the Israel/Lebanon war of 2006) pushed him from crazy guy to crazy and violent guy.

To look at that event as terrorism I feel is an exaggeration; it was a hate crime, but not terrorism. And yes, a lot of terrorists are mentally ill as well, but usually a mentally ill terrorist is manipulated by someone in a position of authority- this is not the case with Haq.

So Al-qaida announces that Yemen is it's new base for operations and Yemen releases 171 prisoners with ties to them?

I hear they are also setting up a new base of operations in Gitmo.

You do realize that fear of terrorism is in a virtual tie with 'the economy' and 'losing ones job' as major concerns of almost 80% of Americans? As for your guess,... wrong.

whyworry: There we go, a solution to the Gitmo problem. And to think, we could have just given all of them pen and paper, asked them to write down everything they felt we should know, and promise to be good.

This isn't new. In most wars up until the 20th century, prisoners were let go with a simple promise to go home and stop committing violence. Napoleonic Wars, US Civil War, all those people left the battlefield with a simple statement that they wouldn't return.

The total war of the 20th century made it seem like we need to FEAR the other side, rather then just try to disable their ability to make war.

We can't simply take people into custody and keep them for their entire lives. It's just not reasonable. At some point, they're going to go home, I'd rather it be sooner, and I'd rather it be with the understanding that they don't have to return to this act, and if they just go home, I'll be over.

crispyone 2009-02-08 09:15:56 PM
With all the concerns about the economy it's good news to hear that al-qaida is still hiring!

I hear they have a kick-ass benefits! Something about a bunch of virgins in your severance package.

Fear of terrorism for the average person is farking stupid. We should be conducting a war on lightening, cuz it kills more of us than terrorists.

In other news, I held the door open for people downtown at a large building yesterday, and thereby "released" ten people who I "suspected" of something or other.

FTFA: Yemen released 170 men it had arrested on suspicion of having ties to al-Qaida... suspicion of having ties to al-Qaida... suspicion.

ZOMG! "Terrorism" is so dastardly, that the accused is automatically guilty, regardless of whether they actually did anything or not.

Like, what if we did that for other crimes? Like, well, he could potentially up and rape someone one day, so let's just call him a rapist, even before he "attempts" to commit rape. Even if we have no proof.

It's like these cockfarkers got us programed to view those that commit political violence as a whole different creature, so far removed from the rest of humanity, that they need to be "unmasked" Blade Runner style, before they go all sentinent and pull another 9/11.

(cue: Hillbilly accent) "Durr, I don't care if they are guilty of anything... they have 'the capacity' to maybe become a 'terrorist' eventually, so let's lock them up without finding out if they did anything wrong, so I can drink my own urine without fear of being blown up... durrr."
