I'm ashamed to say that while I get it now I didn't get it then and I should have.

Wikipedia's page on Jocko Homo links to this somewhat bizarre pamphlet: Jocko Homo (new window)
Apparently MTV / VH1 have a problem with the song and its title these days.

Actually you're on my lawn. However, you're welcome to stay and I have beer.

Their appearance on SNL was quite relevant to my interests.

Viewers simultaneously evolved the term,"WTF."

I've been a fan ever since I saw that episode live. They also played satisfaction.

I saw that SNL episode with Satisfaction. Mind blowing to a 10 year old that was already giddy with being up late. I'll always thank my stoner aunt for giving me that memory. At 12 I got Freedom of Choice when it came out on 8-Track. My world was changed forever.

I just bought this episode of SNL off iTunes, exclusively for the DEVO performances. There is no band quite like them. DEVO forever.

Here it is, summarized. Humanity is not evolving, it is devolving, growing dumber by the day. DEVO exists to point out this fact, and celebrate a ride along the downward spiral. If you don't get it now, you never will. Those of us who do will point and laugh.

Oh, I see what's going on with these replies. You think I don't get the "Devo" concept.

No, I get that part. I got that part when I first heard them. I just don't get the music, or get into their music. Devo is up there on my list of annoyances, right up there with Throbbing Gristle, Tom Ellard, Masami Akita, Richard James, Tom Jenkins, and a few other things that people have a fanatical devotion for that I can't seem to understand why.

To each their own, but you can definitely keep Devo for yourself, thanks. That's all I'm saying, but I'm not going to troll Devo threads like Valdes trolls Radiohead threads.

Heh heh, I don't find Devo weird though. Just annoying. Genesis P. Orridge...now that is farking weird. Don't even look at his pics on Discogs. You will need a lot of eye bleach.

Some people just don't "get" some stuff.

Metaphors, irony, kitsch, subtext and camp as well as other creative mechanisms are elusive to some.

I have always been mesmerized by stuff that I encounter when it is over my head. Some just have an innate and automatic reaction of contempt when something deviates from their perceived notion of what "should be" as to their norm.

These people are called retards.

Been there, done that, bought several CDs, the new Double LP, and saw two concerts. I actually carried Hiroyuki Hayashi on my shoulders at a 2005 show in Philly.

To quote Gerald V. Casale: "Anarchy and rebellion are obsolete." A rock band is a commodity, by embracing the most banal and absurd iterations of this, DEVO mocks from within.

I freakin' love DEVO. God, we could use more weirdos like them on the radio today.

That's a far more eloquent response than I got from the likes of craigdamage, whose argument boils down to "my band is really clever, and if you don't like them you are a retard."

Maybe Disney is the most "banal and absurd iteration" of music.

Or maybe they just want to say that they "bought in" instead of "selling out."

FreeLoveFreeway: I dunno, is it trolling even if you're just announcing your disapproval of a band?

No, but on Fark apparently everyone feels the need to dismiss you as troll for saying, "You know, chaps, that's not really my cup of tea."

I hoped dropping a few interesting names in the mix might liven up the discussion beyond cheerleading for Devo, but I don't think many Devo fans ever recognize a damn name I listed because they really don't know shiat about music after all.

Now that is some trolling. I hope Valdes would approve.

Hey, some people just don't "get" the Jonas Brothers either.

Bob does.

BTW, I was into the Nihilist Spasm Band before, during and after everyone else was... if anyone else was... which they weren't.

I had a friend who loved those guys, along with Acid Mothers Temple, Nurse With Wound and a few others. I am convinced that the lot of you aren't from this planet. Maybe even not from this galaxy (although NWW has some moments.) Then again, I listen to some German dudes wanking around with a 909 and reverb effects and think it's the most brilliant music ever, so I'm not exactly one to cast stones.

At least some people are able to think outside the box and be funny about it. Cheers.

saw it as a 9 year old. that and the bowie/klaus nomi snl appearance pretty much blew my mind for music for the rest of my life.

I was WAY into Devo when I was in third grade. I remember completely getting it, even back then.

It's nice having a friend with a cool older brother. Saved me a lot of pain -- I avoided a lot of shiat thanks to him.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! You're annoyed by Tom Ellard? Usually the only people who know of Tom Ellard are the people who would be least likely to be annoyed by him.

As an evangelist of DEVO, I find the polite, informed approach works best.

Me too. DEVO is a band that I love on paper; they seem like the right kind of skewed view of reality. But what it comes down to is that there are basically 3 songs I like (Beautiful World, Dare to Be Different, and Girl You Want). EVerything else, I cannot stand listening to.

SHOOT, I *love* Polysics who are totally DEVO inspired. Yet the original sounds bad to my ears.

/which is too bad, because I have TONS of it on my iPod...

I just recently got into Polysics.... alot of great stuff.
they definately got some Devo and B-52's in em. I think they have more energy... and thier keyboard player is so cute/wicked musician. dont like thier older surf type sound, but the fast techno rock is great. ... and YES they pull it off live without losing anything.

ZombieStreetCred: mekkab: oh, and Boogie-Boy freaks me out.

In terms of DEVO mythos: Booji is the infantile spirit of Devolution, a personification of humanity's childish tendencies, and yet innocent and unblemeshed by the human stupid filth that surrounds and corrupts.

In terms of reality: Masks have been a key element of DEVO's visual image from the earliest days. Booji, Mark's alterego, came about simply from finding the mask in a novelty store. The character formed from there. An early, theatrical incarnation of DEVO featured the entire band in masks as "Chinaman" (Jerry Casale), "The Clown" (Bob Mothersbaugh), "Jungle Jim" (Jim Mothersbaugh) and Booji. Booji serves now as another voice, almost the positive voice, in DEVO's music: childlike, innocent, and semi-optimistic.
