Wil Wheaton, the teen actor who for years played the character Wesley Crusher on Star Trek, gained the 10th-place spot on our Twitter influence list by virtue of his lingering TV notoriety and a charismatic collection of posts on technology, video games, sports, and his personal life.

Congrats, Andy Greenberg. You made Wil grind his teeth right there.

First of all WW is no longer a teen actor. secondly I have never seen the word Twitter used so many times. I know the article was about twitter but holy shiat every other word was twitter.

/twitter

The only things more worthless than Twitter* are articles about Twitter*.

He's been around here longer than most and has done a metric shiatload to promote the site. Unlike some other celebrities who've come and gone from here, he's unpretentious. What you call lust, I call respect.

May be unpretentious but also accuses famous comedians from stealing his own act without any proof (or logic, frankly). I'm sorry but Zach Galifianakis doesn't have to steal from this has been.

Stephen Fry is endlessly amusing on twitter. Levar Burton and Brent Spiner are good for a laugh too.

Yes, Brent and LeVar are fun to follow. I followed Wil initially because he was a fellow Farker, didn't click in my head right away that he was also a TNG cast member - something I should have known right away...

Wheaton, also an author and blogger, sees Twitter as a platform for instant communication with his followers, a kind of real-time hive mind.

I see what you did there!

/Surprised they didn't follow up with "Resistance to Twitter is futile" or something

More interesting than Twitter's business potential, he says, is the kind of shared experience it can offer. Earlier this month, Wheaton was throwing a Frisbee with his son when he saw a meteor flash across the Southern Californian sky. He ran inside, noted the shooting star in his Twitter feed and immediately got responses from dozens of followers around the world who had spotted the same flash of burning space debris.

"That kind of thing," he says, "satisfies the geek in me tremendously."

I love me some Wheaton, but that shiat is sad. It's like something from an Onion article.

I think it has something to do with the fact that even though Wheaton is a no talent geek hack who by rights never should have left his Mother's basement, he still managed to attain a status similar to Danny Bonaduce.

He seems to get along great with the twits. Here on Fark, you're not supposed to be nice to him or about him, because it creeps him out.

Who can spot the problem here...

"Be there in a minute, my douchey friend, I'm busy explaining why people from Pittsburgh are hateful and should die."

Only cool if Wil had brought his son in to help/watch him post the twitter and get responses.

Not cool if he ran off, leaving his son.

He made me grind my teeth, but in my case it was due to his misuse of the word "notoriety". It's a mistake that's unfortunately increasingly common. Being noted or notable is usually a good thing, but the words "notorious" and "notoriety" carry a negative connotation. Being known for playing Wesley Crusher, for ex--

um, hmm...

On second thought, perhaps he meant exactly what he said.

Gridlock 2009-02-08 05:09:02 PM
I like Wil, but frankly, "Twitter" (WHO CARES?!?).
