"If I do what they do, I'll be 'cool,' " said Hugh Burke, a 13-year-old in seventh grade.

I doubt Hugh is in much danger of being cool.

FTFA: Vermont had the highest and second-highest rates of teenage alcohol use and binge drinking, respectively.

My roommate is from Vermont, and he doesn't drive drunk.

He does smoke tons of pot though.

A. Vermont is awesome. I lived there for 6 years.

B. There *is* too much teenage drinking there

C. There was a day care center outside the high school in the town that I lived in, but that's a whole separate thread.

Did you live in St. Albans or Rutland? I lived in the Northeast Kingdom all my life and can definetly say there is nothing better to do in VT than have a party in the middle of someones field.

Yea, but with Otter Creek, Longtrail, Magic Hat, and plenty of others, can you really blame them?

/those were the days...

The dominant form of weekend entertainment gravitates toward impromptu parties where alcohol is often the focus.

Is this supposed to be some kind of new revelation? It's called high school.

"The attitude that we encounter tends to be, 'Kids will be kids. They'll outgrow it. I did it when I was young,' " Cimaglio said.

What exactly is wrong with that attitude? Aside from a very, very, small minority, kids will outgrow it.

I spent the last two of my teenage years in Massachusetts, but practically in sight of the VT border, and I did drink a bit then, so i'm getting a real kick out of some of these replies. Of course, i was in college then, so it probably had more to do with that.

Burlington is the one place where it's nice to be in-town in Vermont.

The mountains and forests and wildlife are also nice.

protip: underagers will try to do things they're not supposed to.

And also, yeah.. lots of pot smoking going on 'round here.

Creoena 2009-02-08 05:53:11 PM
Of course teen drinking is commonplace here...not only is there nothing to do but it's so rural that no one would even know someone was having an underage drinking party, and even if someone alerted the cops it would take them 30 minutes to get to the party, and by the all the kids are gone.

/From experience

The Bill W. house is in Dorset, Vt.

Espertron 2009-02-08 08:45:24 PM
I hope the Vermont authorities catch these young pot smokers. After all, they're responsible for murder, theft, rape, assault, battery, breaking & entering, espionage, carjacking and embezzlement.

Pot - The root of all of society's ills.

Paid for by your friends in the beer, wine, liquor and tobacco industries.

I personally prefer that all my kids get drunk which in HS at least once. My kids are going on to college, and people do things like binge drink at college. I would much rather that my kids get shiatfaced at the O'Neills down the street, than on some campus 4+ hours away. I can really effectively intervene in only one of those cases.

My dad told me how he and other parents always knew whose place we were planning on partying at, and how they'd take turns pulling drivebys or something check up on us. Stuff like some phone chain of "Hey, Frank its Dave, I'm taking the little woman out for a dinner and a movie this Friday, so our kids are likely going be getting shiatfaced in my basement, poke your head in at about 9 will ya?" I plan on doing the same thing when my kids begin getting into the HS partying.

So there's nowhere else in the country where underage kids party? Is this really news?

And news flash, tethead, Phish sucks even when you're high.

farbfarker: wat else is there to do in vermont? wat a farking shiat hole

You've either never been here or you're a complete douche. I'm betting it's both.
