Damn, looks like spending 24 days in the ocean will turn your face blue.

Wow.

Still, my high school trip we took a long train ride to a far off town, which was cool, and then afterward in PE we had a thing "run to [town]" the same town we went. If it's the same distance, it's like we could have run there. Like, we ran the same distance cumulatively, as we went by "bullet train."

So given that this woman's trip needed a cage and support boats and what all, makes me wonder if you can't break similar records in super-cold pools or what.

Me, I'm happy I can do laps in a normal pool thankyew :)

Dear subby,

Thank you for using one of my all time favorite Simpsons references.

Sincerely,

Very cool and super ballsy, but Hero tag? Really?

Did this woman shatter the glass ceiling for swimming in the ocean or something? Are we really progressing as a society because of this?

ladyway905 2009-02-08 02:15:51 AM
It's probably just a bad picture, and she might have been cold at the time. That's what it looks like to me. I wouldn't do it. Never liked the ocean enough. Not snarking her though. That is a really cool accomplishment.

I have goggles like those, they are really good. Still not going to swim the Atlantic though.

I swam in the Atlantic in 1977.

Sheesh!

Noobs

Rohasman 2009-02-08 02:25:45 AM
No, swiming in the ocean dosn't turn your face blue. Spending 8+ hours in the water does require some special sunblock, though. See this Link (new window)for further information, care of Robocop.

Impressive, but she had a support boat and everything.

Personally, I find Frank Samuelsen and George Harbo much, much more impressive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Harbo): in 1896 they rowed an 18-foot wooden rowboat across the Atlantic. No support boat, no sail, nothing but what they brought with them.

Came in for pics of hot 56-year-olds in bikinis.

Leaving disappointed.

Pfft, she stopped to rest. Swim it straight through, then I'll be impressed.

zerth 2009-02-08 02:53:30 AM
Her planned route was only 2100 miles, while the first person to do it went 4000 miles.

So she thought she was only about half as good as a Frenchman? img1.fark.net must have taken away img1.fark.net's anti-depressants to sneak in this story.

Seriously, some of you need to get a farkin clue. Denigrating this woman for ONLY swimming 2000 miles or having a support boat is farking ludicrous. Grow the fark up, get out of your mom's basement, and recognize an unbelievable physical achievement.

Probably not, but think of this - she made it further than the Titanic did.

/HS Swim team, life guard, Mile Swim in BSA, grew up on Long Island Sound, still wouldn't try it
//She's got balls - but the cold water means they're in her throat right now.

No, she was in a shark cage. I hardly think at one point the shortest distance in the Atlantic she didn't hold onto the cage for a bit. She busts my balls for sure. But hero? Meh. Could you imagine dating this lady?

Apparently 24 days of sea water makes your teeth yellow, or did she swim from Britain?

So, okay, I'm really not trying to belittle her accomplishment. But the only real difference between doing this and swimming 2100 miles in a pool is that she didn't start and end up in the same place. It's not like she was in any real danger. Hell, she had a support boat following her with freaking energy drinks the whole time.

But hey, good for her.

ElegantGoose 2009-02-08 06:40:24 AM
I think she's pretty badass. I grew up swimming in the Great Lakes and have only been in the Atlantic once and the waves were pretty brutal.

That being said, her skin color still makes her look like she could be Edward Scissorhands' sister. Or that she at least got the same Avon makeover.

Shame I checked the front page before I was gonna submit a similar link from another website. My headline was going to be "56 y/o solo swims the Atlantic. Started as a man ended with significant shrinkage"

It may be better that somebody beat me to it.

check out the wiki page on Beoit Lecomte, the first person to do this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benoit_Lecomte

in tribute to him, Google Maps used to offer directions for swimming across the Atlantic:

What the heck? This woman didn't swim the atlantic she started on an island part way across.

Benoit Lecomte didn't either he stopped on an island part way through.

heavythumb 2009-02-08 11:38:17 AM
ok, 8 hours a day, 24 days?

192 hours to swim across the atlantic? Sounds more like a woman rode a shark cage that was dragged through the water across the atlantic.

puppywuppy 2009-02-08 11:38:41 AM
And i thought it was cool to swim across our local lake.

ClayParrot 2009-02-08 11:42:15 AM
Am I the first person to do the math here? I had to read the article a second time to make sure my initial reaction wasn't miscalculated.

2100 miles in 24 days swimming 8 hours a day?

2100/24/8 = 10.9375 miles per hour!

Unpossible

Me thinks at the very least the support boat sped along while she was aboard.

I would think a reasonable long-distance speed would be 1.75-2 mph.

/long time ago, all-state swimmer

ClayParrot 2009-02-08 11:45:06 AM
I did forget to take into account ocean currents, which, if I recall correctly can be up to about 4 mph, but still, even if they were tailwind currents the entire way, she'd fall way short.

/Damnit Heavythumb, you beat me to it my minutes!

Jument 2009-02-08 11:55:12 AM
Shark catch? Wuss.

It's quite an accomplishment but the shark cage thing seems fishy. The boat would have to tow it, wouldn't they? Just doesn't seem right somehow.

It's a long swim. I doubt I could do it. I certainly wouldn't want to do it, as it would be mind-numbingly boring to swim for 8 hours a day.

And it's not heroic, she didn't do anything to advance the state of humanity, save a life, or even make anyone's life better. She swam, for 8 hours a day, for nearly a month. It's not heroic, it's just a stupid thing to do, for the purpose of setting a record. You know there's a world record for eating a bicycle? That's about as stupid as this is.
