Well do they mix him piratically out like all crap bands these days?

Hey, bass player. Look at the bass player. Look at that smile, there's sadness in that smile. Look at that chord structure, there's sadness in that chord structure. Look at him flail like the wailin' wall with nothin' but stubby fingers and a dumb look on his face. He don't know it but he's balding...spiritually. But everybody hates the bass player. No one invites the bass player to the party after the show.

seen em open for godsmack in detroit a few years ago. godsmack was good, but the deftones set was amazing (and loud as hell)

get well soon chi

no, you're thinking of murderface.

but as far as the story goes, i didn't even realize he was still in a coma since reading this back in november. must have been one hell of a car accident. i hope the best for him and those around him.

/deftones faithful since '95

Love that band. I hope everything works out OK for Chi Chng, but I don't want tnat to be the end for (the) Deftones.

/Never can figure out whether to include the article in their name.

Glitchwerks: Hasn't he been in a coma for a while now?

yea, i think the accident happened the day before or after election day. can't remember the specific date. from what i heard, he was coming home from his brothers funeral, wasn't wearing a seatbelt and hit his head on the windshield. i don't think he was fully ejected tho. it was a really bad accident. chi is very lucky to even be in a coma right now

i saw them play at the spaceland ballroom in la about 3 weeks before the accident. the place only holds 300-some people it was AMAZING. it was their first show in over a year. one of the top 5 performances ive ever seen.

Damn, I didn't know about the accident either. Deftones were great when I saw them, VERY loud and intense.

My metalhead employees used to bust on me for playing bass (because we all know how unimportant bass is to metal).. "When looking for a practice space, remember that a refrigerator is more important than a bassist." Ha ha

hate hate HATE this band. only thing I hate more is the fact that they have to deal with one of their own being in a coma and still being obligated to perform in some places. I don't plan on seeing them again, ever, but having this happen to anyone in any band really sucks and I hope it ends in a positive way for everyone involved :(

tailormadebassist 2009-02-08 03:20:13 AM
Actually, one of the reasons I love the Deftones is the bass is a very crucial part for most of the songs. Like on "My Own Summer". Chi rarely follows the guitar. Instead he's mastered weaving around the melody and creating unique parts. He only follows the guitar when necessary to move the song forward.

@Architecture I don't think it's so much "obligation" as it is honor. They know that he would probably be ticked if they were just waiting around instead of enjoying life. They'll welcome him back in the band as soon as he gets better. I would want my band mates to do the same if that were to happen to me.

Long post...longtime Deftones fan.

You may all be hating on bass players in here, but I know that there is nothing hotter than a female bass player. So there.

Yeah, cuz god knows that Geezer Butler was excess baggage in Sabbath.

Woah, he's still in a coma? I remember the story about his accident when it happened, but I had just assumed that he had been in recovery since I hadn't heard anything about him dying.

This. I also disapprove of the fact that many bands do not value their bassists. The bass is fundamentally important, dictating in many cases the chord progressions, melodic dictation, and other important changes in music.

Blah. Chick bass players are a total gimmick. They usually suck. That's why they play bass. Shameless marketing tool for alot of bands. Except the Iron Maidens bassist. I heart her.

Saw Deftones live a few years back, biggest disappointment ever. Perhaps they had a bad night but I wouldn't pay to see them again.

I always find this to be funny, because the same guys who say that are usually the same guys that are all over this dude's dick:

//I do play the bass, though
///Chi's an awesomely thoughtful, intelligent guy who happens to be a bomb-ass bassist for one of the more underrated bands in metal. Best wishes for him.

I just rebought White Pony the other day since my original disk has been badly abused. I think I had to rebuy Adrenalin awhile back too. One of the few bands I'll actually do that for.

/yeah, you can call me an idiot for not just downloading it
