That's a no-brainer. House and Senate Repubs are 100% sure its wrong.

I got a kick out of hearing the Repubs complain about the Dems pork-barrel projects, especially since most of the Repubs' ties still have sausage drippings all over them.

I think he's laying out the stakes; I don't think a lot of people understand just how serious the situation is these days, and how bad things could get. Let's just hope that we can get a little "Country First" cooperation from the Republicans (though I doubt it, at least the ones in Congress) about getting things *really* done.

Strikes me that were it not for the 1.4 trillion stimulus the Republicans rammed through in 2001, ther $850-billion for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, tenfold increase in defense spending, etc, that we wouldn't be in thie Goddamn position in the first place.

Go to the governors. The ones who need help and not a stupid platform. Yes this would pit the GOP against itself, I'm assuming I don't need to explain why this wouldn't be a bad thing.

Exactly. This kind of proper placement of blame has no place in American politics. The proper form is to falsely accuse political opponents of harboring your own worst policies. You see it here in Fark. It works like this:

- Liberals failed to respond properly to 9/11.
- Liberals started unnecessary wars.
- Liberals can't balance the federal budget.
- Liberals hate gay people.
- Liberals march in lock-step and don't consider alternate viewpoints.
- Liberals are to blame for Abu Ghraib, Plamegate, the AG firings, the tanked economy, the mortgage crisis, and Ted Haggard gargling nards.

See how it works? Listen to Rush, Hannity, Rove and Cheney. If it wasn't so monumentally destructive, it would be hilarious.

True dat. I'm sure it'll happen before this is all over, five or ten years from now. It'll get worse and the states will get truly well and farked, and then we'll see what the Republican governors say versus the guys in Congress.

You seem to equate GOP with fiscal conservatism. Yes, yes, I know they SAY they are for fiscal conservatism, just like the Dems said they would "Stop Bush" in 06.

You also seem to think that the Liberals were fighting everything you list tooth and nail, and not gleefully rubber stamping whatever Bush put in front of them.

This mess is a failure of the federal government as a whole. There is not a whole hell of allot of difference between the two parties anymore, switch around a few issues like abortion, gun control, etc and you can't tell one from the other. North Dakota's reps are all Democrats, yet more fiscally conservative than many GOP members.

Both parties are on a path to self destruction, the sooner, the better.

Look at the cuts the Republicans demanded from the stimulus package to remove the so-called "pork:"

Partially cut:

• $3.5 billion for energy-efficient federal buildings (original bill $7 billion)
• $75 million from Smithsonian (original bill $150 million)
• $200 million from Environmental Protection Agency Superfund (original bill $800 million)

• $100 million from law enforcement wireless (original bill $200 million)
• $300 million from federal fleet of hybrid vehicles (original bill $600 million)
• $100 million from FBI construction (original bill $400 million)

Fully eliminated

• $55 million for historic preservation
• $122 million for Coast Guard polar icebreaker/cutters
• $100 million for Farm Service Agency modernization
• $50 million for Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service
• $65 million for watershed rehabilitation
• $100 million for distance learning

• $140 million for BYRNE Competitive grant program
• $10 million state and local law enforcement

• $89 million General Services Administration operations
• $50 million from Department of Homeland Security
• $200 million Transportation Security Administration
• $122 million for Coast Guard Cutters, modifies use

• $16 billion for school construction
• $3.5 billion for higher education construction
• $1.25 billion for project based rental
• $2.25 billion for Neighborhood Stabilization

I'm not convinced this will work anymore since the Republican concept of pork is anything that can, you know, actually help people. Fark you Republicans, fark the lot of you. You are doing your absolute damnest to drag the country into the gutter. I hope the President starts telling the people loudly about your treachery so they know you have betrayed the nation.

They cut the broadband provision? fark them.

The only reason I have 3 mbps broadband - can't get faster, btw - is because a small business is broadcasting it. Can't get cable, can't get DSL.

It's not like I'm in some holler in West Virginia, either. I live, admittedly, in farm country, but I'm 20 minutes from one town of 65,000, 40 minutes from a town of 120,000. The phone companies just don't feel like upgrading their systems to provide it. So I thank my lucky stars for the one source I have for anything faster than an unstable 9k dialup connection (14.4 is too unstable to even try).

By the way, Republicans, ever stop to think that broadband access gives rural business owners a way to stay in contact with the outside world, and do business worldwide? I work with clients all over the world thanks to the Internet. If I couldn't, I'd be sol in Michigan's awesome economy.

Luckily we have an abundance of apostrophes.

/sorry, couldn't resist

By my book, there is a 100% chance it will be done wrong. Trying to re-inflate a bubble is not a good way to run an economy. The savings rate must increase and debt should be difficult to get (higher interest rates). But we're sitting at about a 0% fed fund rate trying to get our citizens into more debt. How anyone thinks this is a good idea is beyond me.

carpbrain 2009-02-07 08:45:02 PM
There isn't any single better return on investment than putting money into education and scientific research. Both in the short term, putting dedicated smart people on the right path, and in the long term, paying huge dividends in research and development for American companies.

Good to see that the Republicans continue to oppose these ideas. They will be slapped down by the large Democratic majorities in Congress, and they will wear the scarlet letter of ignorant obstructionism for years to come.

The "moderate compromise" gutted the stimulus funding for schools, education and science. How could they be more wrong?

IMO, Biden is being polyanna, there is about a 90% chance this bill will not work. For anyone thinking this bill will get things going tomorrow, or even this year I have some very, very bad news for you. 2009 will be bad, 2010 will be worse and maybe 2011 might show a ray of light. You can try to "blame" someone, but that is just sillyness.

Read "Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate". The Republican base adheres to the norm, that if you don't have something, it's because you didn't deserve/earn it. Rural areas don't have broadband, ergo they didn't do anything to deserve/earn it.

I know, it's mind-numbingly stupid.

Hat Madder 2009-02-07 08:51:30 PM
Biden told roughly 200 members of the House Democratic Caucus gathered for their three day annual retreat.

"I promise you as [a colleague] once said to me, 'I'll come campaign for you or against you, whichever will help you the most in your district.' And so will the president because, again, we're all in this together."

In other words, honesty and integrity are not a consideration.

I love it how it's basically Biden's job to make gaffes, meaning he unintentionally says things that are true. Obama has to be the consummate optimist, so he can't say anything like this, but Biden fulfills a vital role in preparing the country for the worst through his "bumbling" statements.

Why not put this stuff in the FY10 budget where that type of spending should go. If we are in crisis (and we are), then a stimulus package should focus exclusively on job creation and tax cuts both personal and corporate. I get your sarcasm, but the point is that so much of the stimulus package is not going to immediately turn things around and that is my problem with the spending list. Nice-to-have-stuff is not the priority right now.

In this whole debacle, I haven't seen a move made yet that wasn't based on some political motivation.

The Republicans have no motivation to vote for the bill. If it passes and things go well, they lose whether they voted for it or not. If it goes poorly, they can say "I told you so."

Of course President Obama wants Republicans to vote for it: (A) He gets to keep a campaign promise about bringing a new tone to Washington and (B) if things go poorly he can rightly say that both parties agreed with the plan.

And now Biden is just trying to lower expectations a bit so that if things go bad, he can say "Well, I told you that this was a possible scenario. We tried but it wasn't in the cards."

They are all already looking to 2010 and 2012.
