Can they prosecute him for treason with the penalty of death for such comments in Britain? Because they should.

Wow- Even with the current XE, thats stupid expensive. I can get Old Speckled Hen here in the US for cheaper than that.

last week the pub chain JD Wetherspoon offered a 99p pint of beer, the lowest price for more than 20 years

What... no story for these guys so they could get their well deserved img1.fark.net tag?

I have had only one or two good beers in my entire life that would be worth that much.

ypsifly 2009-02-07 08:51:13 PM
Jack up the price...people will want it more. Stupid but true.

Like my buddy that paid $185 for about a pint (or so) of Sam Adams Utopias. I can't stand the stuff but I can thump my chest and declare that I've tasted some of the most expensive beer in the world. FWIW

/Would rather spend $8 on a 750ml Unibroue Terrible.
//Now THAT'S a bargain!

I have noticed, every Fark beer thread is crashed by Belgian beer snobs, who think they know everything---which makes it awful tough on those of us who actually do.

The other day at the supermarket, I noticed a 24-Oz. bottle of Belgian Chimay, with a $12.99 pricetag.

Comments anyone?

Chimay is wayyyy overpriced. Last I heard they were at risk of losing Trappist status. From what I understand it is more or less mass produced and bottled off-site.

For those who would like to try belgian style ales, I would recommend something from Unibroue or Ommegang. Much more reasonably priced and if you decide that isn't your bag you aren't out that much cash.

Drink what makes YOU happy.

I miss the Wetherspoons since I moved to the US. I could get good beer at a decent price. This place is barren and empty with a lack of pubs and never recovered properly from prohibition.

Tourney3p0 2009-02-07 08:59:21 PM
It costs about 60 cents per 12 ounce bottle to make beer, and that's not even buying ingredients in bulk. If you were to buy in bulk, something like Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout would cost about 25 cents per pint.

NumberOne2 2009-02-07 09:00:42 PM
So what? Go to any nightclub in Vegas and you can easily pay £10 per pint.

rbuzby 2009-02-07 09:00:49 PM
At that price I would only drink 1 or maybe 2 in an evening.

Just like non drunks do. Or so I have heard.

ypsifly 2009-02-07 09:01:44 PM
From what I understand, ale in England that has a higher abv is more expensive as stronger brews are taxed at a higher rate.

True?

chaddsfarkprefect 2009-02-07 09:02:43 PM
Oh, he didn't open a normal-priced pub in Manhattan?

LincolnLogolas 2009-02-07 09:05:39 PM
Pffffft, go to a posh bar in NYC and find out what they're charging for a pint of beer.

Dihnekis 2009-02-07 09:12:23 PM
I was kind of underwhelmed by Samuel Smith. (the old tadcaster ale or something)

rdub1968 2009-02-07 09:16:30 PM
There's a place in Detroit that has 99 cent pints. You might have to pick the pubes out though, but its still cheap.

CaptainFletch 2009-02-07 09:17:03 PM
To make a higher strength beer, it costs considerably more in raw ingredients such as malt and hops. So why charge the same for a 4.0%abv bitter and a 6.5%abv IPA?

ypsifly 2009-02-07 09:20:37 PM

Not really. Adjuncts such as corn and rice can be used to fill the malt bill while yielding a higher abv. Look at some of the cheap yet strong malt liquors.

I'm not a snob about it at all. I'll buy any trappist beer I find on my many trips overseas to Brussels.

ha-ha-guy 2009-02-07 09:25:49 PM
I've seen people happily drop down $10 for a mixed drink, so this guy might be right that "the market can bear it."

That being said, unless it gives me a blowjob 5 pounds a pint isn't flying.

T-Luv 2009-02-07 09:27:27 PM
I can get a pint of lone star for 2 bucks. Beat that, beer snobs!

Bob Ondeeznuts 2009-02-07 09:27:47 PM
I'll drink anything. I've spent a few hundred dollars on one bottle of alcohol (champagne and wine) and I've spent $1 for Budweiser in a 16 ounce cup. I like it all and I'll drink anything you put in front of me, as long as it contains alcohol. Stop being so damn snobby about shiat and just get drunk.

T-Servo 2009-02-07 09:28:54 PM
Incidentally, in recent weeks £5/pint has been pretty close in price to what many decent drafts cost in Euros on the continent.

I remember Harpo's in the 90's. They had 99 cent pitchers and they used to take canadian at par. So we'd by a pitcher with a twenty, get the change in american and repeat. By the end of the night, I would make about ten bucks in exchange.

I live in a small city in Shandong Province , China.
Here I pay 3RMB (30p) for 500ml of Tsingdao beer. It's a steal !
Can anyone find a cheaper 'pint?'
£5 !!?? for a pint?? Hope it's worth it.

Well, I drink in the working industry, or maybe work in the drunken industry and you farkers might think you drink what you are farking about but you sure don't talk what you are drinking about, or the other way around, I forget which. . .

Obligatory?

BTW, best beer in the world is KloisterBrauerei Andechs, direct from the wooden keg, on draught---and only available at the place of origin.

Thread over.

Pliny the Younger (10.5% ABV Triple IPA) was released Monday at the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa.
Served only in a half-pint glass: $4.50 which would be $9 a pint.
Half-gallon 'growlers' are over $30 to refill, and I saw several people refilling 3 or 4 of them at a time the morning it was released.

Starbucks is getting into the beer business?

Anthony Bourdain idolizes this guy, and spoke to him at length on one
of his NO RESERVATIONS about England, but he just seemed to be a burned

Nice to see that impression was accurate.

Merus 2009-02-07 09:39:17 PM
People don't drink beer because it tastes good, they drink it because it's cheap, gets you drunk, and it's sold in pubs where there's lots of other people to talk to. The beer's a social lubricant. Selling it for 5 pounds isn't going to catch on.

Go to any bar in the States. A UK pint is 20 oz. Most bars in the states do 12 oz "pints". We are already paying that here.

Mister Peejay 2009-02-07 09:42:45 PM
John Buck 41: $7.50? (give-or-take) Better be same damn good stout.

Arrogant Bastard costs $10 for a pint here.

Most bars want $3-4 for 12 ounces of generi-piss, too.

In short, the sound you can't hear is that of my tiny violin.
