Q: How many Pollacks does it take to hook a speed camera to power a neighborhood?

A: One

Damn, that joke sucked.

Hmm... not bad, but next time use it to power the grow lights in your marijuana barn.

Fabric_Man 2009-02-07 07:40:58 PM
From TFA:
"In light of their cooperation, a judge suspended a jail sentence and ordered the man to repair the damage, pay a fine of 800 Zlotych (US $225), and pay back the city for the 4300 Zlotych (US $1200) in electricity taken."

So they just have to pay back the bill and they're square? Mess with the police money tap, er, cameras in the U.S. and they'd be branded as terrorists and sent to jail for 40 years.

was thinking of something similar to that here in the Boulder, CO area. a lot of the 'Watch your speed' signs and the lighted bus stops are powered by solar panels mounted right on top of them.

/wouldn't take much to unbolt that solar panel.
//wouldn't take much more to set a few of them up at my house!

Living off-campus years ago, I thought about attempting a power-generating stunt using the "free" water we got as part of the rent.

A small water wheel hooked to the kitchen sink provides free electricity, if you aren't paying for water.

Thought about the phone line thing too, but they'd have to know...

it's very thin wire, low voltage low current. About the best you could do is charge a cell phone. Doubt one could pull more than a few (less than ten) amps or so without burning up the phone wire in the house.

Riche [TotalFark] 2009-02-07 08:10:43 PM
Upon being confronted, Piotr W. and girlfriend Anna M. immediately confessed to taking the power. In light of their cooperation, a judge suspended a jail sentence and ordered the man to repair the damage, pay a fine of 800 Zlotych (US $225), and pay back the city for the 4300 Zlotych (US $1200) in electricity taken.

Wow. That sounds surprisingly...rational.

It's pretty sad that the justice system of a former police state is so far ahead of the U.S. when it comes to rational response to crime.

/they probably have a smaller percentage of "devout" Christians who vote out anybody who isn't "tough on crime."

Based on how blinding the ones are around here in the farking daytime, about 10 gigawatts per flash.

My freind used to live in some rather low rent apartments, and the guy next door to simply ran a cord from a socket out in the hall into his apartment. heh.

Did anyone else think the writer was trying to be clever there?

You know, using the word light in a article about electricity.

Anyone?

Is it against the law to move into an apartment and find that you have free cable, even though it was never part of the lease agreement and you decide not to tell anyone?

dman6667 2009-02-07 09:02:40 PM
If he used inductance somewhere along the way he could have thrown off the copper's trail. Heh. Alternatively, if he had stopped using it around fiscal year end, for maybe 6mo's, and then started again... hmm...

Hero tag is reserved for disabling speed cameras. In ecological terms, this man Polish man was a parasite rather than a predator. A mosquito.

You know, once electric plug-in vehicles become widely available the theft of electricity is going to really take off. Even if the cars come with weird plugs, I expect a lot of creative attempts to use non-certified adapters and stuff. With all the outdoor outlets around town you'd never have to actually pay to charge your vehicle.

jabelar: I expect a lot of creative attempts to use non-certified adapters and stuff.

I predict a lot of plug monitoring by the local elec company. And then a call to the local donut eaters. Its not like you can recharge in 15 mins and be gone.

This is Iraq's concept of a power grid. Just keep hooking extension cords and bits of wire together. When it stops working, add more wire.

mccannd3 2009-02-07 10:21:56 PM
In Poland you can steal power from a speed camera. In Russia, speed camera steals power from you. That one kills in Branson.

It's illegal to receive cable service without paying for it.
