No Slayer? Flawed.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-02-07 12:31:49 PM
Comparing the list to my music collection, I appear to be uninfluenced by metal. (2/11 -- Judas Priest, Iron Maiden)

I came here to say "Black Sabbath, no1, thats all I care" but this is a glaring omission. Napalm death, Death or ManoWar but no Slayer? Someone needs to put down the crack pipe

no Slayer and yes Motley Crue.

Manowar? For better or for worse, I guess.

I would also add Godflesh, especially among newer metal bands.

What? No Jethro Tull?

No Slayer and Metallica is #8?

The list is BS.

Replace Motley Crue with KMFDM. I know, they're not "metal". But they brought the short sharp shock industrial sound to the masses.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2009-02-07 03:31:42 PM
At least they got the top 3 right.

brody074: needs more slayer

Jeez, guys...I mean, I know it's Slayer, but really, it's just Slayer.

At least Celtic Frost were mentioned, along with Death, Venom, and Napalm Death. I was expecting the list to have nothing but garbage from the hair metal extravaganza of the 80's.

They lumped them into a group, using Metallica as the representation:
"Early Metallica was at the forefront of thrash along with Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Exodus."

I'm not sure how you can compile a list of who is most influential; is it dependent upon how they influenced other musicians who then became famous?
Otherwise, it would be impossible to determine. Even if in the first scenario/famous musicians only - according to what?
It's really vague.

uncledeercamp 2009-02-07 03:58:21 PM
Just like any other list that gets posted around here: a couple of hits and a whole lot of misses.

YMSB does a pretty good bluegrass cover of Crazy Train. =)

Hayseed Dixie is pretty cool too.

Roto-Rot 2009-02-07 04:05:46 PM
Pretty good list, but Mercyful Fate should be near the top.

GonzoNihilist 2009-02-07 04:07:00 PM
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say The Gauntlet is a British website.

HighZoolander [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-02-07 04:09:18 PM
Definitely needs more Slayer!

Can't deny the influence of Death, Napalm Death, Celtic Frost, or Venom, but I don't think it's going out on a limb to say that Slayer influenced or inspired virtually every extreme metal band (at least the ones formed after 1985 or so).

SPna15 2009-02-07 04:22:23 PM
Get rid of Metallica, replace them with Kreator.
Get rid of Motley Crue, replace them with Bathory and/or Burzum.
Replace Manowar with Dio.
Other than that, It's a pretty good list.

/Kreator>Slayer

Barnacles! [TotalFark] 2009-02-07 04:25:48 PM
Delete the following:

celtic frost
venom
manowar

replace with:

slayer
mercyful fate

Motley Crue? Seriously?

How about:

Mercyful Fate
Slayer
Deep Purple

Oh, and the Iron Maiden pic is seriously outdated.

FredGarvin 2009-02-07 04:55:12 PM
Other than Sabbath, Priest, Motorhead, and Maiden, this list explains perfectly why metal sucks these days.

turntable slave 2009-02-07 04:55:54 PM

For better or worse, a lot of stuff is influenced by this album:

I came in here to say "SLAYER FTW!!!1!" But, you know, Venom was a HUGE influence on Slayer, so I guess I'm ok with them not being on the list. I would have replaced Motley Crue with someone else though. Suicidal Tendencies maybe? Iggy? MC5? Blue Farking Cheer?

Illidan 2009-02-07 05:02:52 PM
Badass list. I don't like motley crue, but this is about influence. With only eleven spots to choose, Sabbath/Maiden/Priest were givens, and they had to hit the progenitors of Death, Thrash, and Black metal. I'm guessing they had a good friggin' reason (according to the logic of how they built the list) for not adding Slayer, since it's far more popular than some of the bands they put in.

craigdamage 2009-02-07 05:08:19 PM
Lack of SLAYER is beyond embarrassing.

Blue Cheer is even more vital.
Black Sabbath has cited Blue Cheer as their primary influence.

Deep Purple and even Rainbow should not be absent.
Many MANY metal themes were derived from the Rainbow "Rising" album.

Hell,I would put a band like SAXON before crap like Motley Crue and even more pathetic,Manowar. At least SAXON were the first "NWOBM" band and Spinal Tap was loosely based on them.

lpAZ 2009-02-07 05:08:57 PM
Spinal Tap should have been 11 - Duh.

Yeah, Slayer.

I think Angel Dust is one of the most underrated albums of the last 20 years. If only Patton's ego could be tammed, we might have more albums like that.

Done in one.

craigdamage 2009-02-07 05:16:11 PM
Pentagram
Sir Lord Baltimore
Armageddon
Captain Beyond (their first album, second one is kinda mellow)
Budgie

...these above bands are a bit obscure now but were quite important in the very early days of metal/hard rock.

I also greatly appreciate the early "stoner" bands like Sleep,Kyuss and Obsessed.
There are so many bands right now very heavily influenced by them.

Yeah and early crue albums were a great mixture of metal/punk, dont hate it just because they had a little melody and a decent singer compared to punk bands.

And slayer is ok but influential? If thats the case it would have been better to have The Misfits, Slade, or even T rex on there.

aszure 2009-02-07 05:24:31 PM
As far as top lists goes, I have seen worse.

#11 Motley Crue-Um...not sure I would have them here. Maybe in a top 25, but not top 11.

#10 Napalm Death-maybe

#9 Death-maybe

#8 Metallica-yup

#7 Manowar-tough call

#6 Motorhead-hell yeah

#5 Celtic Frost-I grew up with a crowd who just f'n loved these guys. I didnt get it myself. But probably wouldnt put it on my list

#4 Venom-yup

#3 Judas Priest-yup

#2 Iron Maiden-yup

#1 Black Sabbath-yup

So...

No Slayer (as has been mentioned over and over), no Pantera, no Alice Cooper, no Megadeth? Damn if you're going to put Death or Manowar there...why the hell not Anthrax?

This. 1000 times THIS.

Angel Dust will someday, IMO, be heralded as a classic of not just rock music, but music in general.

Derwood 2009-02-07 05:40:30 PM
Slayer yes, but you can't take Metallica out. I know most of you fancy yourselves haters of Metallica, but to deny their influence is just retarded

Metal white trash retard music.

No Fred Durst for influencing that horrible late 90's rap/metal? Stupid 90's trying to kill my beloved metal.

I have the first 5 Black Sabbath albums. Those are the only Metal albums I listen to.

And then some. 'Saft und Kraft' from Tohuvabohu deserves its own category for out-of-control sound.

whizbangthedirtfarmer 2009-02-07 05:54:38 PM
No Winter? They spawned (for better or worse) the whole doom metal thing. Love their songs...which go...and go...and go......and go.......

Totally. Why don't more metal bands these days should just release more of their albums in the 70s?

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-02-07 06:15:36 PM
No "in the court" era or "Aspic/starless" era King Crimson?
bah.
