I think people have been doing that for quite some time.

Disappointed in the lack of the Face/Off reference in the headline.

* Fun fact, that film was going to originally star Arnold and Sly. That would have been a better film than Citizen Cane, The Godfather and Casablanca combined.

You know, based on how they keep describing her "taumatic facial injury" and the fact that the patient doesn't want anyone to know the nature of the trauma, I'm thinking it was a self inflicted GSW to the face. I think it was the standard "gun in mouth" suicide attempt.

Or perhaps the facial trauma was so peculiar that the nature of it would readily identify her from a scan or google of news stories.

Your logic is sound, she may well have attempted to eat a gun, but there's still room for less controversial explanations.

Judging by the listed injuries, which may or may not be the full extent, that's certainly plausible. However, what is going against the theory is the psychological treatment transplant patients receive (read an article on this based on the french woman). If she had actually tried to kill herself, she'd be extremely farked in the head, on top of having to come to terms with a new face.

They (and she) wanted to keep her identity secret. I for one can very much understand this. People would treat her like a freak show.

Just keep tabs Rachel Ray or Oprah. She'll pop up eventually.

StephieN.M. [TotalFark] 2009-02-07 01:43:35 PM
One of her lips is hers, and one is someone else's. That would creep me out. It's like you're kissing someone else when you purse your lips. Regaining the sense of smell is amazing, considering how many blood vessels and nerve endings are involved.

Reasons why she's not disclosing her injury? Maybe it's because she's private, and it was traumatic, and she doesn't want to be entertainment for 5,000,000 people.

MattyFridays 2009-02-07 02:03:57 PM
I'm incline to agree that it was a GSW, but it may not be self-inflicted. Perhaps a victim of a crime and they never caught the perp, or perhaps a car accident where she was at fault but no one else was injured.

If she was suicidal and had a destroyed face, chances are she would have finished the job another way.

Also, if she was suicidal, the psychological vetting process they did before they did the operation wouldn't have panned out.

I'm guessing GSW, not self inflicted.

Yeah. Extremely few women attempt suicide with a gun. Compared to men it's a tiny number. Women tend to do pills, gas, maybe razors.

FTFA {she can} purse her lips as if to blow a kiss. Except that one lip is hers, and the other is from a dead woman.

Buzzkill. Even a Beej would creep me out.

Maybe, but it wouldn't explain the blindness in one eye she has.

I was thinking that she's on a heavy set of immuno-suppressive meds, but what happens if her body starts to reject her face?.

That would be downright creepy, and I'm sure if she allowed paparazzi pics of her now, imagine the 'update' you'd get on every TMZ/ET or soft news show for months afterward; this could rival Anne-Nicole Smith in frequency with "Transplant nightmare!" headlines.

While it is considered statiscally unlikely for a female to go for GSW to exit stage left, those that do tend not to go for the face. They think it'll be easier for people to bury her if they can see her face one last time/don't want to die scarred/ect. More likely is a temple shot, that she autonomically jerked back from, putting her face in the way at the last second, and saving her life. The body has some really strong preservation measures built in, you know? Things like the gag-reflex and myoclonic jerks have saved many a life from otherwise desired death.
This would also explain the unseeing eye, as the temple, jerked back, leaves the optic nerve in perfect placement. Hell of a nasty exit wound, though.

A commenter on another site said she was a friend of this person, and she mentioned something about how she was looking forward to getting back to her grandchildren and church, FWIW. I don't know if the commenter was genuine, but it left the impression that the patient was a settled lady in her 50's or 60's. Doesn't mean she didn't attempt suicide, but the trauma could have been anything.

You hit on one of the biggest ethical questions about this procedure that doctors are debating. Basically, if the transplant is rejected, there's no way back. You can't reverse it, you can't put a prosthetic in its place. If it doesn't work out now or at a later point, the patient will die, and for humane reasons, the doctor has to accept that he/she will have to be willing to assist the patient to die, if it comes to that. There's no halfway point.

In other transplant surgeries, the transplant was always done only in life or death situations, which makes it easier to accept that if the transplant fails, the patient will die (he would have died anyway, without the transplant). This is the first time they are considering transplants that are not actually meant to save lives, but to "enhance quality of life." You could argue that if the transplant fails, the patient will die directly as a result of the transplant. That's a sobering thought.

I'm guessing quality of life is so terribly diminished without a face, that the patients can probably accept this more easily than the doctors. But it just highlights that there are serious questions that need to be addressed.

Holy crap, they have a whole section of ugly face things. Here's one of a 14 year old Vietnamese girl who has a huge tumor poking out of her mouth from the same site.

I mean I'm happy for the folks that they're getting help but isn't this just a thinly veiled excuse to have a freak show on a legitimate news site?
