Is there a system for creating those names and is it in anyway similar to the system south park showed family guy using to create plots?

Mad lib phonetic names if you will.

Well, she's from London and her name is Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, which I'm guessing is of Indian/Eastern origins, although I haven't a farkin' clue to be honest.

But don't let the facts stop you from your rampant culturally biased statements.

Oh, they do the same thing there. Just a different set of names.

Also, "rapper" and "performing"? Something doesn't add up there. I am deeply suspicious.

Also, what do you mean "more" interesting? That would imply the Grammys are, in fact, interesting to begin with. Clearly the entire headline was satire of the deepest order.

Garbage sampled The Clash for a drum loop on their self titled first album - you know, the good one - to pretty good effect.

Also, Big Audio Dynamite confused the issue with Mick Jones sampling himself extensively - kinda worked, and I guess he's allowed to :-)

The paper planes song is fun to dance to. I love seeing prepped out white boys make pistols from their fingers and "shoot" along to the song because they are soooooo gangster...

Also Diplo produced the song (I think) and I like Diplo...he did some great collaborations with DJ Shadow

The song after that on the CD is much better. Of course, I have a thing for Timbaland's beats, and he worked on that particular track.

M.I.A. qualifies as rap? I'm not really sure what the hell you'd call her music, but I don't think it would be rap.

I haven't really gotten into the new album, but Arular blew my head off. And yes, she is hot.

There are good rappers out there, it's just that most of them are underground.

"Paper Planes" kicked ass, by the way. It perfectly combined a mainstream sound with lyrics that actually make sense to the cultured. And it sounds fresh. Not an easy thing to do.

Well, I just listened to it and it's definitely not my cup of tea. Absolutely horrid actually. It makes me all stabby, like when I have to hear Lady Sovereign. I guess I am not cultured, but her voice was absolutely grating to listen to.

I don't think it sounds fresh either...a classic Clash anthem with a touch of grime...If this tune was going to be handed out to the remixers, my first choices to take a stab at it would be Deadbeat, Appleblim, Shackleton, Peverlist, maybe even Burial...

Burial would probably drown her obnoxious voice in filters and effects...not a bad idea imho.

I just don't hear whatever it is that makes this tune for you. Sorry.

I gave Paper Planes a listen.

As a rule I don't like rap or hip-hop. But it wasn't bad, catchy even.

I know she doesn't need the doctors permission as such to perform but she'd sure as hell need it to get insurance. How is she being allowed to do this? physical exertion and stress from performing can't be good.

Yeah, Diplo was the producer, and he's pretty amazing. His solo albums are really fun, and he's made a bunch of great remix CD's like the one you're talking about with DJ Shadow, and another one recently with Santogold. Actually, one of the main reasons M.I.A. is as well-known in the music world as she is, is that for a long time, she and Diplo were a musical couple... she "rapped" and he made the beats. They broke up, I believe, before her latest album dropped, but he still did the production for Paper Planes.

If you guys haven't heard the Diplo remix of Paper Planes with Bun-B and Rich Boy, go do that. It's one of my favorite Bun-B verses ever, and Rich Boy's verse is a romantic poem to his girl named Beretta (get it?).

Thread over.

Does anyone know if she's slated to perform at the Oscars as well? If she has the baby when she's supposed to, i can't see that happening. Which is sad, because that was shaping up to be probably the best thing this years Oscars have going for it.

Exactly. If anything, she's one of the various alternative genres (probably alternative dance, a genre whose previous best known practitioner was Big Audio Dynamite).

I love BAD, but they didn't do near as much as any of the above.

I actually loved her previous album "Arular," which had waaayy better tunes, kinda on the techno-dancehall tip. Better beats, better production "We want bucky done gun!".

"Paper Planes" is actually a very weak song, but people only love it because it's been in a couple movies. I still dig her previous work though.

I've pretty much given up on rap threads on Fark. They're just excuses for people to post thinly veiled racist comments.

I've given up trying to fight it or convince them that what they are doing is racist. I'm just going to make fun of them instead.
