Awesome. Just Awesome. I (Dr.) know this will be good

The compelation 'Banned in DC' even has a live video from Providence RI's legendary club The Living Room (RIP). It is crazy for me to see that place as packed as it was for that show.

The version of 'Big Take Over' on 'The Youth are Getting Restless' has one of the best bass lines towards the end. I dont know if anyone has the CD or knows what I'm talking about but check it out. Wicked awesome stuff. Pure energy.

Ashtrey 2009-02-05 03:18:02 PM
I'll have to check them out. I always thought that part of the draw for Sevendust was that you don't often hear a "black" voice singing rock.

Ashtrey 2009-02-05 03:18:39 PM
Well, that and the guy sings really well too.

ZING!

I never knew they were black, I've always liked their music. Why does it matter if they're black or not? Oh, right....African-American.

Nothing like a hardcore band made up of Rastafarian homophobes.

/"pay to cum" and "sailin' on" were the baddest songs I'd ever hear when "Bad Brains" came out in '82

Do What Now Question Mark 2009-02-05 03:39:51 PM
What part of the band is from Africa, and which part is from America?

Or are they just black?

What's was fun about Bad Brains, is that they started out with jazz, and worked their way into hardcore. Unlike a lot of folks who got onto the scene, these guys knew how to play, and that was a revelation to the scene.

I fully credit Bad Brains for lighting the way for Fishbone, Living Color, and Follow for Now--and even odd ducks like Heavy Metal Horns.

Budd Tugly 2009-02-05 03:43:27 PM
In the 'family of man' sense, Bad Brains being black is immaterial, but as far as (DC) punk rock in the 80s-90s, it was huge. It would be no less strange if they had been from mars. Actually, HR probably IS from mars, or at least mentally ill.

I know they can be hit or miss these days, but the last concert I saw (3 or so years ago) they were awesome. HR came out and did a backflip into the crowd, despite looking like Grady from 'Sanford & Son'.

Or a crack head. Wasn't he in a jail cell the day 'I Against I' was released. Sad thing is that HR just cant really sing anymore.

My dad told me a story about going shopping with my grandma and she wanted to buy a new record. This was in the late 60s. He asked her what she wanted and she said, "Find me that new guy I like Charley Pride." He went and found the newest Pride record and brought it to her and she said,"Uhhh this can't be right. Are there 2 Charley Prides?"

It is relevant. Hardcore music is so overwhemingly white, yet here is probably the most influential hardcore band of all and it's a bunch of rastafarians.

Yea Exactly. Plus they have a big reggae influence which other hardcore bands dont have and would be totally lame if white guys did it.

they have alot of great recordings and even more terrible ones. its hard going thu all the different versions.

/guess the 15 mins of BB in the documentary American Hardcore wasn't enough for some people.

I've been fortunate to see them play twice...and both shows were awesome. I can't wait for this documentary.

They've apologized for being homophobic, which is quite noteworthy, considering how homophobic a lot of rastas are. Bad Brains rule.

I watched a dvd of random Jamiacan TV with HR a few weeks back. He lives in a buddy's warehouse in Bmore. Odd dude.

HR I mean. My buddy too, actually.

Let me just note that I got the Bad Brains CD at the library today before I saw the link. I hope it's not so good that I regret passing them over 25 years ago, like with the Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers.

exyankee 2009-02-05 10:59:39 PM
I saw them in New York in '86. Not a big fan, but man what a show. Glad I wasn't on the floor.

The Dynamite Monkey 2009-02-05 11:50:58 PM
The only hardcore band worth a shiat ever.

(OK, maybe The Effigies were good too.)

Funny I heard the BB last night on Sirius and thought, "If these guys had chosen to play Maiden style metal they would have sold 50 million albums and we'd be putting them in the RNR HOF."

Bad Brains = Unadulterated Awesomeness

"Big Takeover" is one of those songs that makes you go absolutely nuts on the the lead in to where it gets heavy.

He recorded Sacred Love over the phone from jail. They are awesome! That is all.

very possible but I like the juxtaposition of impossibly fast thrash to whip the crowd into a frenzy then beautiful reggae every few songs to keep the roof from blowing off during their shows

I think I was at that show, was it in 1985 in the summer and it was hot as fark in there. After 4 or 5 songs we were begging for a reggae song. The crush of the crowd was so strong I thought I was going to pass out.

If you aren't down with this, shoot yourself in the head, you've got no soul.

Hoping for BB covers at the Cro Mags set at United Blood '09.

I saw a HR solo gig a few years ago in Spokane. I thought his voice held up pretty well (FTR, "Sacred Love" was the only BB song they did AFAIK). He was obviously crazy as fark though. He signed a CD for me. For all his peace/love/rasta rhetoric, dude seemed ready to snap....
