In fact, hell, I'd go so far as to limit their pay to the median wage in their respective state (which even in the richer states would be well under the $100K mark).

Government isn't a free ride for those involved, and "politician" as a career path should be a choice about patriotism and civil service, not cold, sweaty cash.
