headline: missleading (sort of)

"Doing a top ten list of the best video game to motion picture translations is like doing a top ten on the most appealing types of cancer: even if you experience one of the "better" ones, you're still going to experience some significant pain and discomfort."

sencondly, its not from 'New York Times' its from gamespy..

im guessing a admin just read the link subject and greenligted. cool article, but has flaws......goes on with drivel...

Random_McEric 2003-01-26 10:44:30 PM
"I've only seen the trailer for Resident Evil, but..."

Well, I'm glad to know that this critic isn't concerned with such minor details as, oh, I don't know, actually WATCHING the movies before he judges them.

doctechnical 2003-01-26 11:43:55 PM
I liked the music to Super Mario Brothers. &ltshrug>

LibertyCabbage 2003-01-26 11:44:21 PM
If there's a bigger ball of cinema suck than WING COMMANDER, I'll eat my hat.

mashuren 2003-01-26 11:45:22 PM
I can only name five without looking at the article

Mario Bros.

Final Fantasy (although I still don't say this was based on the games in any way, shape, or form)

Resident Evil

Mortal Kombat

Tomb Raider

Now time to go read it and see what kind of horrors I've been missing out on/forgetting

tab262 2003-01-26 11:47:04 PM
oh come on mario bros was slightly amusing....

dorks_ 2003-01-26 11:47:10 PM
Granted, those were all bad, but...

Nothing like a cynical dick to review movies that he/she has never even seen. I give that review two thumbs down and the reviewer the title of "Asshat".

Gabbo is Fabbo 2003-01-26 11:48:16 PM
1. House of the Dead

JoshZX2mi 2003-01-26 11:48:30 PM
Well, the soundtrack for Mortal Combat was good. It included KMFDM, so it obviously didn't suck too bad.

boot 2003-01-26 11:48:34 PM
I was going to use the same quote McEric.

JoshZX2mi 2003-01-26 11:49:08 PM
Or was it Mortal Kombat? damn dyslexia

Palmer 2003-01-26 11:49:56 PM
I liked "The Wizard". That movie makes video games feel like you are actually doing something productive.

St_Ides [TotalFark] 2003-01-26 11:50:11 PM
Wow... what a surprise... Mario was the worst movie.

Does the fact that I didn't hate Wing Commanader make me a bad person?

I didn't like it much, but there was a little enjoyment there.

FishBulb 2003-01-26 11:50:12 PM
This is a terible freakin article the dude hasn't even seen half of these movies. Dumbass McGee

skinink 2003-01-26 11:50:22 PM
Yea Tomb Raider did suck arse. All they had to do was stick to the T&A and throw some action in. Instead they complicated it with they back story of her father. Besides that, A. Jolie was not at all good. Hopefully, DareDevil and The Hulk will not be bad as comic book translations to film (although Ben Affleck sucks arse, mandatory really if you go out with J.Lo.)

mashuren 2003-01-26 11:50:36 PM
Pokemon really isn't a fair entry in the video games-movies genre... Pokemon is an entire series of liscensed products. I'm not exactly sure what came first. But I've read the manga, and it's really not all that bad...

I had no idea they made a double dragon game and, from the looks of it, I'm never going to want to. I should have remembered Street Fighter and Wing Commander. And I've never even HEARD of "house of the dead"

rightmindx 2003-01-26 11:50:49 PM
Has there ever been a GOOD movie based on a video game?

I thought not.

Bonzy20 2003-01-26 11:52:04 PM
The Mario movie was the first that popped into my head...*shiver*

Crotchrocket Slim 2003-01-26 11:52:27 PM
Double Dragon should have ranked higher on the list... I mean, they had Alyssa Milano dye her hair blond in that... completely unforgivable. That, and even Robert Patrick managed to suck in it.

Wak_Wak 2003-01-26 11:52:31 PM
Mario Brothers was not mind-blowing by any stretch, but to call it the worst? Worse of all of _those_? C'mon now, that move was enjoyable.

mashuren 2003-01-26 11:53:25 PM
Er, a double dragon MOVIE that is

/too late

armaghetto 2003-01-26 11:54:02 PM
if the wizard doesn't count as a video game movie, then final fantasy shouldn't count.

anyone remember that "last starfighter" movie?

NoNameAndrew 2003-01-26 11:54:21 PM
Mario Brothers was hella lot better than Double Dragon.

Judeccan 2003-01-26 11:54:24 PM
I love Gamespy:
"I haven't actually seen Resident Evil, but..."
"This movie won't be out until later this year, but..."

Not that I'm defending Videogame Films at all, but... uh... "I read once that this guy didn't like it" isn't really a critisism.

Griff 2003-01-26 11:54:25 PM
Agreed. Don't review movies you haven't seen, dumbass. Besides, Resident Evil was half decent.

Backgroundnoise 2003-01-26 11:54:27 PM
street fighter

ugh

double dragon was mildly amusing for how bad it was

tommyg 2003-01-26 11:55:04 PM
Anyone remember the Super Mario Bros. TV show. I used to watch that show all the time growing up, but I don't remember much anymore.

MooKow 2003-01-26 11:55:30 PM
I saw Super Mario Brothers when it came out, and I loved it! Of course, I was seven...

IshadymilkmanI 2003-01-26 11:55:38 PM
sheesh some of you people are worse than this article.

in the pokemon field: the "red" and "blue" games came before the cartoon and the other crap (althought I think it all sucks anyway)

Final Fantasy wasnt based on any one game because none of the GAMES are even based on any of the others. The movie was its own thing, just as all of the games are (the movie did suck, they should have made a movie out of Final Fantasy 7... it would have been great).

doctechnical 2003-01-26 11:55:54 PM
LibertyCabbage: If there's a bigger ball of cinema suck than WING COMMANDER, I'll eat my hat.

Can't argue with that. Movie didn't even have boobies IIRC, and that might have been the one thing that could have saved it. At least Starship Troopers (Heinlein is probably still doing 300rpm in his grave over that) had Boobies.

The first version of the game was the best, because you could just blow away those annoying wingmen without penalty, then go get the mission done without their farking things up.

FrancisR 2003-01-26 11:57:01 PM
The Mario Bros. movie is definetly Plan 9 from the Mushroom Kingdom.

SomeIntelligentQuipThatICan'tThinkOfRightNow 2003-01-26 11:57:26 PM
Final Fantasy...I kinda saw a connection with the gooey stuff in the movie with the gooey stuff in Final Fantasy 7...weren't they both the goo from dead people or something like that?

They of course called the goo in the movie something different than the game for some stupid reason.

Maybe I'm the only one who drew the comparison.

Lobsterkins 2003-01-26 11:57:36 PM
Finally, somebody besides me recognizes that the Mario Bros. movie was the absolute worst event to ever plague the human race by about 10 orders of magnitude.

Monaco 2003-01-26 11:58:42 PM
TRUST THE FUNGUS

Backgroundnoise 2003-01-26 11:58:53 PM
but plan 9 from outer space or whatever that movie was called rocked!

Pluvius 2003-01-26 11:59:22 PM
Oh, did I mention The Spirits Within has almost nothing to do with the Final Fantasy games? Because it doesn't.

Yes, it's only a complete rehash of Final Fantasy 7.

At any rate, this list was mostly accurate, though I'm not sure how Tomb Raider ranked so low. I'm also not sure why Pokemon was even on the list, since more people associate the movies with the cartoon than with the games.

My very first DVD-ROM Drive came with an interactive Wind Commander game that froze up the damn PC every time we tried to play it - - its #1 on my list - - havent even seen the movie. :p

mashuren 2003-01-26 11:59:48 PM
IshadymilkmanI
I agree. I was hoping beyond hope that it'd be based on 7, but alas it was not the case.

And although each game differs from all the rest, I still had problems with the movie. One, it was set on Earth. EARTH. Each FF game is set in a different universe. Setting it on Earth was just wrong. Also, there were NO traditional Final Fantasy elements: no magic, no mogs, no chocobos. Also, the fact that it was almost completely space-based didn't help.

No, the movie was an everlasting suckfest that tried to capitalize on the Final Fantasy name alone, and failed miserably.

rightmindx 2003-01-26 11:59:52 PM
Anyone ever played the Gabriel Knight games on the PC? That is one of the few franchises that comes to mind that could possibly be made into an awesome movie. Gabriel Knight is a great character and the stories in these games are richer and deeper than most movies I see.

Invaribly, Hollywood will fark it up anyway by casting someone like Freddie Prinze Jr. in the title role and making the story so confusing/ridiculous that the movie will lose all credibility.

Bonzy20 2003-01-27 12:00:26 AM
Heck yeah, I watched the Mario show all the time lol

those were the days..

larsoncc 2003-01-27 12:01:06 AM
Back when Nintendo was big, nothing affiliated with the NES could do wrong. Not even the Mario Movie. Witness these insane products for the NES.

TommyymmoT [TotalFark] 2003-01-27 12:01:21 AM
I'm pretty sure th worst thing ever created, was a disco song called "Pac Man Fever".

SomeIntelligentQuipThatICan'tThinkOfRightNow 2003-01-27 12:01:36 AM
The only thing that I said it had in common was the goo crap.

I think they just took the idea of the goo and made a twist out of it...making monsters out of the goo, instead of having stuff being turned into monsters by the goo.

I am becoming addicted to the word "goo"

MooKow 2003-01-27 12:01:54 AM
Feh, Final Fantasy III would make a superior movie. Just once in my life, I would like to hear someone scream "Uweeehehehehehehe."

fakeMacGyver 2003-01-27 12:02:20 AM
A good movie based on a video game? I like "Cloak & Dagger". The actual made mock cartridges call C&D in the movie; the game was actually "Agent X" and it works great on MAME.

"The Last Starfighter" had an Atari 2600 game and NES one -- neither looking like the one in the movie, of course -- and the film was cool.

Teenwolf 2003-01-27 12:03:29 AM
I agree that all those movies sucked. Well, actually, I've seen all but Wing Commander, so I won't comment on that. All the other ones sucked.

Interestingly enough, I have a friend who loves some of those movies. Final Fantasy and Resident Evil because if he sees flashy graphics, he doesn't care whether or not there's a plot. Super Mario Brothers and Double Dragon because they're based on video games he loves, and he thinks that means they're good. The interesting part is, this same friend also criticizes movies that he's never seen before. Actually, I guess it's not really that interesting that I have a friend with bad taste in movies.

CrunchCrunch 2003-01-27 12:03:53 AM
Who cares if they haven't actually seen House of the Dead. I thought it would suck when I heard what the plot was. Then I saw the trailer, and now I know the movie is going to suck. Go watch it, you'll agree.

mario wasnt that bad compared to FÜCKING TOMB RAIDER! ALSO CONSIDER THE FACT THAT POKEMON WAS A KIDS MOVIE! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE STUPID! fark YOU ALL.

Equinox 2003-01-27 12:05:17 AM
For the whole list, I kept thinking "Where's that horrible Mario Bros. movie?". Well, I was vindicated.
