(St. Petersburg Times) Florida State GOP official loses job after sending email: "How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn't get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?"   (tampabay.com) divider line 614

I like it when Republicans tell us how they really feel. They mostly whine that everyone is too politically correct to hear it.

Yeah, that was a real non-apology apology. "I'm sorry... that you all don't have a sense of humor."

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2009-02-05 03:51:40 AM
I have been asked to send this apology for my earlier e-mail. I am sorry that it was received in a negative manner. I do hope that we are going to be allowed to keep our sense of humor.

As you can now see, it went to very few people. I did add Todd Marks in this apology, as he is in the mix now. I am also sorry to learn that some of these persons are not real team players. There really was no reason for this to go beyond those that I e-mailed (8 people). This was not an e-mail blast as I do not have that capability.

Carol

What an apology! "Hey I'm sorry you're not team players with a sense of humor, you jerks! Sorry! Bleh!"

/wonders who Todd Marks is

There is a Todd Marks who is a lawyer in Florida who was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Florida - I wonder if it is the same one???

The amazing thing is, I'm quite sure this woman has absolutely no idea what she said that was offensive, and I'm sure many Republicans don't get it either.

Let me try to explain it to you:

Nearly 2000 Americans were killed in Hurricane Katrina, and many, many more were left homeless and are STILL reeling from the storm.

3000 Americans were killed in 9/11.

Do Republicans think mocking the dead during 9/11 is funny too?

I'm serious.

I honestly think Republicans do not consider 2000 poor black American deaths to be a big deal, and maybe even an improvement.

Everything I have heard and read from Republicans about Katrina seems to confirm this suspicion.

I'd be sarcastic in mocking this person, except for the fear that someone would take the words I said at face value, showing about the reading level comprehension of the average 10th grader. (That's about 4th grade reading level, if you're keeping score.)

If that was an "attempt" at apologizing, then I can assure you that she failed it badly.

Maybe she (stupidly) thought that her apology wouldn't circulate past the original 8 people she sent the email to.

She's a Republican Chairman, so it's theoretically possible she could be that stupid.

PacManDreaming: She does have a point....

No she doesn't. The inauguration was planned and executed over months with the expectation of and provision for large crowds, did not significantly involve the disabled, elderly, or otherwise incapacitated, and was intended from the beginning to work with all branches of government to ensure a successful management of such numbers. Katrina, as you know, is a polar opposite. The levels of government did not interact, did not plan, did not execute their plans, and did not contemplate the existence of those incapable of providing their own transportation when they were a major factor in the tragedy.

It's comparing apples and bullshiat.

Ha, that's the Republican mantra on race relations.

I don't know how many times I've had a Republican sort of nudge me about black people. Just a few minutes ago, a security guard here was joking about how "they" are, you know? (nudge nudge).

I just looked at him.

But yeah, there is a definite right-wing "hey, we white people get it about those other people" vibe.

And hey, I know black people don't tip and try to get free food at restaurants too. But I don't mock their horrible deaths in a natural disaster. I guess that makes me a liberal.

In Australia there are stereotypes about Aboriginals being drunken, poorly behaved and criminals.

On the streets of Perth, many conform to that stereotype.

Is that racist?

Well, it depends. When you see a drunken poorly behaved criminal white person (who are far more numerous than their indigenous colleagues) do you mutter under your breath "farking white people!", or do you reserve that privilege for the abos?

I am the only white person that lives in my neighborhood, and I have to deal with endless crackheads looking for money and various sleazebags looking to steal and rip me off all the time.

Yes they are black, and yes they conform to the stereotype.

The part that racists ignore is that all the other people who live around me (who are black) hate the crackheads too. You're a racist when you mock an entire race of people because of the actions of their worst members. It would be like me judging white people based on Ted Nugent.

Some ethnic jokes can be funny as hell, because they're just funny. Her "joke" wasn't even a joke. That was a big fark-you to frankly, one of the poorest/economically disadvantaged populations in US society. New Orleans residents with ready cash left during Katrina and no doubt some of those same folks attended the inauguration. Fark them too?

wtf

That was straight from the "Klan makes a few good points" crowd.

There is a distinction between saying every person shares those traits, and that a noticable proportion of a group shares those traits.

Also, why do you live in such an area then?

What you don't know and understand not having grown up in New Orleans is just how not funny the state of political corruption was and probably still is in that city. The mayor, governor and senator (2 out of the 3 democrat at the time) all signing a decree stating they wouldn't raise the levees because it hurt the city's aesthetic value.

Is the reaction of the Republicans to this seem a contradiction? Of course it does! Does it sound overtly racist? Yes it does! Does the woman still have a point?! Yes she does!

New Orleans is run like a welfare state where the poor (who are predominantly black) are given everything and told the city will take care of all of their needs... which is NEVER does. The dirty secret is that no one gave a scheisse about New Orleans before the storm and no one really cares about it afterward. All that storm did was give democrats a finger to wag and celebrities something to rally their guilt pity around.

People left New Orleans alone because its 1) in the south 2) a debauchery state 3) corrupt up to the hip 4) filled with poor people that don't cause a stink. That has allowed the masses to treat it like their senile relative that's locked away in a nursing home.

Seriously... storm coming... MOVE!

I'd add to your comments that blacks aren't monolithic, of course. There are many many poor blacks who can't afford travel arrangements on the short notice required to flee from an oncoming hurricane. But there are many many middle class blacks who can afford to travel to DC to attend a momentous occasion like the inauguration of America's first black president. She fails to recognize that it's possible that some poor blacks can't afford to flee from a hurricane, while other blacks can afford to travel to DC. As with most conservatives, to her, "they all look the same" so to speak.
