The difference is that everyone knows Palin really is just too dumb to figure out taxes. Daschle, on the other hand, should have known better.

Well, Republicans don't believe in taxes, so they shouldn't have to pay them.

My job is to review people's returns and find hidden income and assets. I'm getting a kick out of these stories.

There are two reasons ways that everyone is cheating their taxes.

1) The legal loopholes. I've given people professional advice on fark. Even though I haven't been paid, someday I might be. therefore, I can file a schedule C and write off business use of home, TF, my laptop, etc etc.

2) The IRS audit capacity is at an all time low, and has been for about 10-20 years. People in power, or at least most accountants, know this, so they lie and then say "opps. Sorry, my bad" on the RARE chance they get caught, and if they can prove it was something they did in "good faith" there will be no criminal penalties, and probably not even much of a financial penalty.

If any of Sarah Palin's kids would ever get into college (or you know, graduate HS), she'd run up to someone like me. But how likely is that?

Tis far far better to kill the taxes outright than to have them and lie about not paying them anyway. And I'm not even a Republican.

Gore was worse the farther you go back, Gary. He used to stand for censorship and massive intrusion into civil rights.

So, if you really did used to support him long ago, you're an even bigger asshole.

Daschle has paid actual back tax on actual income, as well. So this comparison is completely bogus. I'm tempted to say "nice try, libs," but since it isn't, I won't.

Yuh huh. And I might be inclined to agree with you, at least partially, but all I hear from your ilk after making a notation like this is "ZOMGOBAMAAPOLOGIST!!!11"

Again, as I said for Daschle, I'm sure that Miss Moosey Fate didn't cackle evilly on her plans to defraud the IRS, but was instead simply an idiot- no surprises there, I'm sure. However, she's of the mold where admitting wrong/fixing mistakes is an inconceivable concept, even when caught. Especially when caught.

I realized this earlier today in another thread. It doesn't make it right in either situation. However, I remember Republicans making excuses for her back then (ahem, 4 months ago.) I don't know how common this is but I would imagine it's pretty common. Of course, $120,000+ is a little hard to swallow.

Even an IRS audit doesn't necessarily catch stuff. Daschle was audited in 2006 (hint... lots of big Dem names got lots of audits... expect no less of Obama the other way). The IRS didn't catch this one, either. Thus, when he came out of that smelling semi-rosy, he really didn't think there was anything wrong. It didn't come out until Obama's auditors re-did his taxes again, and told him to pay back-taxes. That was a dumb decision, in retrospect. The IRS wasn't going to re-open an already audited file.

And he payed the max he could possible to pay to cover it, even though no one thought he owed that much, and what do they do use that large figure against him.

If no one said anything, no one would of ever know but they tried to do what was right and the Republicans attacked him for it.

Lawnchair: Even an IRS audit doesn't necessarily catch stuff

I know. I've told people they need to amend their taxes or they won't be eligible for financial aid, and they tell me they've been audited and it wasn't caught, but if I notice it, and I will, I am not allowed to disburse federal funding.

I'm not excusing these people. They need to have their political careers ended. But I understand why this happens.

Mentat [TotalFark] 2009-02-04 09:38:52 PM
Can we please just be honest? This is the head-hunting phase. Whenever a new President takes office, the opposition party goes after the nominees. It gives them a chance to flex their muscles and get some trophies for the mantle. Both parties do it. In political terms, it doesn't even matter whether any wrongdoing actually occurred or to what degree. It's all part of the game.

When repugs are found to be corrupt they get promoted.

mikemoto: Tim Geitner: Tax cheat, allowed to serve in cabinet post. Linda Chavez: Rax cheat NOT allowed to serve in cabinet post. (She was Bush's nominee for secretary of Labor).

Linda Chavez's problems had absolutely nothing to do with taxes; the problem was she let an illegal immigrant from Guatamala live in her home for a time, and continued to give the woman financial support.

I don't know where the "Chavez was a tax cheat" meme came from, but it's not even true -- there was no issue with her taxes (contrary to some reports at the time, Chavez wasn't employing an illegal immigrant, but simply giving charity to one). The issue with Chavez was that she was helping a person who was violating immigration law.

JacksBlack: Daschle has paid actual back tax on actual income, as well.

Yeah, though the particulars of that incident were understandable. The company he was contracted by sent him an annual 1099, but the company had miscalculated his total income, summing only 11 of the 12 months he received pay. Granted, it's still his responsibility to verify the numbers, but let's be honest -- when was the last time you independently verified the amounts listed on your W-2s or 1099s were correct? I certainly don't normally do so, and I'd wager few people do. And I don't think I'd notice an 8% discrepancy in the amounts either.

Here's what blows my mind: The fact that the value of the services provided to Daschle were so high that the taxes were $120,000. Not the rides themselves. The taxes on those rides. I mean, holy shiat, that's a lot of farking rides. If I paid myself for all the driving I do, it wouldn't even come remotely close to that much. Was he being driven to the tip of South America and back every week?

How does that saying go? Republicans keep their curtains drawn but don't have to, while democrats keep their open but should know better?

Its not 100% accurate of course, but I don't think it is without a basis in reality.

Palin made an honest mistake. She was most likely not aware that she needed to pay taxes on reimbursements. Many people make the same mistake.

Though I do find the liberal excuses amusing, "...but, but, but the Republicans do it too!" I thought Republicans are supposed to be a bunch of corrupt villains? If Republicans are corrupt, and Democrats are mimicking Republicans, then what does that make your Democrat leadership?

Sorry, KOS, I like you for the most part, but don't try to use Palin as an excuse for Democratic foolishness.

Using Palin to point out Republican hypocrisy is just fine, though, so I guess that link pretty much leaves us even.

Is the air travel for her kids taxable when it's included in the job?

I really don't know? Just asking.

If she does, then she should pay it. This whole "Repubs are scum" meme is getting stupid. Especially since Obama's appointments are having their own difficulties, which is hilarious considering Obama set himself up as better than everyone else.

2 wrongs don't make a right and some of you look like nothing but hateful simplistic immature hypocrits.
