Saddest headline I ever had to write. I loved that band so much

the first time I saw them live (in 86 or 87), I showed up too early and decided to go to a bar down the road. And here they were. The whole band sitting at a booth, all in leather gears and dark sunglasses on. They sat there for about an hour, and not one of them uttered one word to each other. The epitome of cool

And they were still putting albums of worth, And he was an excellent showman

Guess he can finally have his date with Elvis now

The Cramps were a great band. I finally got to see them in Denver a few years ago. Lux was swilling wine from the bottle and was highly animated. This is a complete surprise.

well I been seein' red and singing the blues far back as I can tell, til daisys came from heaven and decorate the gates of hell, you might b'lieve the world is sweet and fine as sugar candy, but I myself believe in whatever comes in handy [chorus:] daisys up your butterfly, daisys up your butterfly, makes me up and wonder why, you got daisys up your butterfly: you're whistlin' past the graveyard, hopin' for the best, but a hum job after k-mart just might wreck your party dress, your poodle smokes, he'll probably choke and die in his own mink coat, your rainbow's bringing rain that's gunna sink your damn love boat: daisys up your butterfly, maybe maybe not, could be daisys up your butterfly or a bad day at Black Rock

Roll on, rock on, yeah now bop, yeah rock on
Well, there's still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones

I wanna leave a happy memory when I go
I wanna leave something to let the whole world know
That the rock 'n' roll daddy has done past on
But his bones keep rockin' long after I'm gone

Roll on, rock on, yeah now bop, yeah rock on
Well, there's still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones

Well when I die, burried six foot deep
With a rock 'n' roll record at my feet
A phonograph needle in my hand
I'm gonna rock my way right out of this land

Roll on, rock on, yeah now bop, yeah rock on
Well, there's still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones

Well, when I die don't burry me at all
Just a-hang my bones upon the wall
Beneath these bones let these words be seen:
"The running gears of a boppin' machine"

Rol on, rock on, yeah now bop, yeah rock on
Well, there's still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones
Still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones
Still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones
Still a lot of rhythm in these rockin' bones

Damn that is sad. I was a Cramps fanatic as a teen. I followed them on a UK tour after I saw them at a rock festival in Leeds in the early 80s.

RIP Lux, you were one awesome performer, thanks so much for all the happy memories and great, great songs.

Goddamnitsomuch. I have pissed away so many chances to see The Cramps over the years. This sucks. I just figured that they would continue to drop by Pops on the East side every once in a while, and I'd eventually catch a show. I'm so disappointed. Lux was an amazing performer.

I hope the Rev survives long enough for me to get off of my lazy ass and go see him. I got lucky and got to see Exene Cervenka play at a very small place last year. RIP Lingerieman.

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-02-04 10:52:42 PM
so how old was he?

pitchfork link said he was 60 but they retracted it out of the article

-WIKI ,interestingly enough , offers no date of birth

mtv's article says 62

now IMBD says: "Erick Lee Purkhiser, better known as his stage name Lux Interior was born on October 21st, 1948"

coontact music says 52 (but are wrong)

Thanks for the heads up Harry. Sad day I really loved these guys. The sound The Cramps were able to create is perfect. One part Elvis, one part punk, all parts cool. I love that old sound that some punk bands tap into. Another one of my heroes down. Throwing on 'Nazibilly Werewolfen' in Lux's honor.

RIP Punk man.

In general I agree that there's way too much immature name-calling in the forums, but when someone disrespects the dead before they're even buried (and not someone like Idi Amin, Pol Pot, or other person who brought suffering and death to many people, just a musician), I can't say the troll don't deserve it.

Unfortunately it's probably just what the gentleman (I use the term very loosely) wanted. Some people just like to fart in the elevator.

It's not much of a sign of intelligence, maturity, or grace, but I suppose it's the best he can do.

soseussme: It's not much of a sign of intelligence, maturity, or grace, but I suppose it's the best he can do.

The guy didn't do anything worthy of being called a douche. He said he didn't like the music and that he thought their stage show wasn't all that - it's not like he said "I'm glad he's dead", which would have been worthy of the reaction he got.

For the record, beyond Bikini Girls With Machine Guns, I wasn't a fan of The Cramps either, however they were pretty good at what they did. Never saw them live, so I can't talk on their stage show.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2009-02-05 03:00:08 AM
Aw, man... if I wasn't sad enough about this news, I just now read that another old favorite of mine, John Martyn, died last week. Here's a clip of him playing a rather remarkable cover of a Skip James song -- acoustic guitar split off through an EchoPlex and a wah pedal.

Anyway, double bummer.

Sorry, but coming into a thread when someone dies and saying their music was "over rated shiat" -- that's gonna get you douchebag status on most people's charts. Odd that you don't get that, yet you're so sensitive about them being butt-hurt over the abuse that they invited on themselves.

I think calling it "shiat music" is a bit borderline. It's name-calling itself, so he kinda started that aspect. He could have said "The music is basic/simple/not particularly difficult" (which is true -- I love the sound but it's not particularly complex or challenging) or something along those lines.

Or really, he could just have chosen to not participate in a thread about a subject he has no interest in. It seems more a thread for fans to pay homage to the deceased.

There are plenty of times when expressing dislike of a musician or their music is appropriate -- this just doesn't seem like the time or place. It seemed every bit as inappropriate as someone calling somebody else a douche for disagreeing with their own musical tastes.

Ugh. Reading that back I sound so pompous. Feel free to call me a douche.

Not sensitive here, just didn't think that, in the wentzy comment scale, the response matched the comments. But whatever.

Haven't you heard, we don't call each other douches anymore - it's wentzbag now.

so.... we don't have as much right expressing our discontentment in any which way we want, the same way he trashed the band any which way he wanted? That seems one-sided

Dude didn't offer any argument, he just did the equivalent of putting his favorite pair of leotard and took a giant shiat in front of all of us.

But what about if Amy Winehouse, Miley Cyrus or one of the Jonas Brothers trips on a hotel room soap, gargles their tongue and dies?

Will you be respectful then? No, no you won't - you'll be right there with the rest of us, making jokes and kicking their corpses around.
