D&D claims another innocent child's soul.
</sarcasm>

I wanna cast magic missile!

ComicBookGuy 2003-01-26 07:50:43 PM
Heh...I've got a "magic missle"...well, more like a "meteor swarm"!!!!

NoNameAndrew 2003-01-26 07:51:48 PM
Golly, what a stupid piece of shiat of a person.

Bondith 2003-01-26 07:52:05 PM
The boy was arrested Thursday after his friend found the "hit list" containing the names of seven other young people in the community.

An armed goblin, able to fight back, is 7xp. How much is your stoner friend worth? He probably only has 2 or 3 hitpoints.

*geek mode OFF*

DPhrygian 2003-01-26 07:52:09 PM
Great, more idiots blaming D&D for stuff. Like it needs any more bad publicity. There's no explanation of why they drew a connection between D&D and the hitlist, but they make it sound as though they're related. Feh.

FatherG 2003-01-26 07:53:10 PM
"Lightning bolt, lightning bolt! Sleep! Sleep!"

The_Pole_Of_Justice 2003-01-26 07:53:19 PM
Well, obviously, this means the Liberals/Conservatives are plotting to corrupt young minds with their Occult/Fascistic board/role playing games.

In other news, the word "insane" is striken from Webster's Dictionary. It is to be replaced with "Liberal/Conservative Conspiracy."

Atwight014 2003-01-26 07:53:40 PM
He failed that charisma roll when he switched tones in that interview with the police.

PeterNorth 2003-01-26 07:53:44 PM
anyone have a link to that video of those roll playing weirdos..

lightning bolt!
lightning bolt!

snooker 2003-01-26 07:53:53 PM
WTF is Ukiah? I thought it was saying he was in some kind of jungle-dwelling tribe.

The fundies were right! D&D is the game of the devil. The devil I tell you!

IMJack 2003-01-26 07:54:41 PM
Let the role-playa-hating begin!

Too bad Patricia Pulling passed on years ago. Not.

Bondith 2003-01-26 07:55:27 PM
The boy, whose name is not being released by authorities, is an avid player of the Dungeons and Dragons board game, wherein players can cast spells on other players, make allegiances and kill their foes, all in a fantasy world.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! Well, maybe the last one is correct, but the first three...ugh. D&D =\ board game, spells cast on other players are (usually) beneficial ones like Bless, Strength, Haste, etc, and I have no idea what they mean by 'making allegiances.' Players aren't summoning demons (unless they're high-level mages).

But of course, I'm preaching to the choir here.

What's the saving throw roll for police interrogation?

But of course, I'm preaching to the choir here.

That's one of the quirks of threads like this: The only two groups who care are the ones who know what the game is, and the ones who hate it without wanting to understand it. And both sides have heard the arguements a million times before.

Trell 2003-01-26 08:04:01 PM
So... did they arrest him for being a major geek or something?

scape 2003-01-26 08:05:14 PM
Ukiah is about 3 hours from here - it's a BFE town not too far from Humboldt/Mendocino county.. So I guess the boy could have been smoking some really good stuff.

knucklebreather 2003-01-26 08:06:52 PM
PeterNorth: Here you go.

JDJoeE 2003-01-26 08:08:01 PM
Well, in todays blameless society they couldnt just say the kid is farked up. They have to find something else to blame. And while placing the blame, dont bother to get the fact straight. Ukaiah a tribe? Maybe in times past, now its kinda middle of nowhere CA with a bunch of rednecks.

so you're walking....and you're walking....and you're walking...and a dragon pops out! A scary dragon! Crazy-scary!

dorks_ 2003-01-26 08:10:05 PM
I dislike the game, but I hate people blaming stuff on it.

There always has to be a scapegoat (rather than putting the blame squarelly where it belongs, the parents) whenever kids do stupid stuff.

Let's blame it on role playing, let's blame it on music. It's Satanic, blah, blah, blah. People can never accept responsibility.

PeterNorth 2003-01-26 08:11:43 PM
FatherG

thank you!!

Mani 2003-01-26 08:14:08 PM
It's not the size of the magic missle that matters :x

Police officers are among the least scientific/logically-minded people on the entire planet.

clevershark 2003-01-26 08:16:49 PM
Go Bucs!

That SNL Halftime show must be the first good idea Lorne Michaels has had in about 20 years.

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2003-01-26 08:17:16 PM
I blame Wizards of the Coast.

redstormpopcorn 2003-01-26 08:18:08 PM
PeterNorth, FatherG, Knucklebreather: I've watched that video clip eight times now, and I still have no freaking clue what the hell just happened.

Is there any background information on that little parade of psychosis?

thedorksdork 2003-01-26 08:19:00 PM
his plan for eliminating the hitlist-ees:
5000000d4

red_dragon60 2003-01-26 08:20:02 PM
Abby, I remember that! I found it on tape and bought it as a gag, and use it as a reminder to people who think that Tom Hanks hasn't made a bad movie.

"This is my pouch of spells. I keep it with me at all times"

"I slayed the gorgon!"

"I was going to cast Fly!"

Bivens 2003-01-26 08:20:32 PM
WHO CARES, THE RAIDERS ARE DOWN 20-3. FORGIVE MY ALL CAPS BUT I AM ANGRY.

Atomicfever 2003-01-26 08:23:19 PM
It took the police a few hours to identify the names on the list since Tom Smith aka Ajax, Jenna Parker aka Mercia the Swift, and Robbie Walker aka Gorn Thunderhammer were not directly in the phone books...

They also forgot to mention that on the list was the desired ways to murder these people.. mostly Fireball, Melf's Acid Arrow, and Power Word Kill.

Spoonfed'sBuddy 2003-01-26 08:23:39 PM

A D&D is evil link, eh?

Everyone better roll a saving throw versus Chick Tracts.

People, it's all about the
"Summoner Geeks"

for classic D&D humor.

DOES ANYONE WANT A MOUNTAIN DEW!?

FifthColumn 2003-01-26 08:29:40 PM
AbbyNormal: These are my spells, I protect them with my life!

Banedon 2003-01-26 08:29:59 PM
AD&D is a good game for beginning gamers in high school. But once you get to college, you have to move up a bit. White Wolf has a great system called Mage:The Awakening.

I think it's better then Werewolf:The Apocolypse or Vampire:The Masquerade but that cause I enjoy the possibility of turning said creatures into lawn chairs. :)

Of course said creatures could turn my entrails into ribbons or other decrative material but that a whole different thread.

Any Etherites out there?

ComicBookGuy 2003-01-26 08:31:56 PM
White Wolf: The Milking. That would be a good title for anything from them.

Spoonfed'sBuddy 2003-01-26 08:32:36 PM
Does anyone else still have the original red and blue dungeons and dragonz books?

//king geek

*shiver* WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT VIDEO?!?

I need to shower now... Thanks a lot you two...

AlexiLalasFan 2003-01-26 08:34:33 PM
Man I used to dig D&D. .

paradroid 2003-01-26 08:34:52 PM
I used to program the names of people I hated from school into SSI games like Galactic Gladiators and just blast them like Biggie.

Tribs 2003-01-26 08:45:27 PM
That video looks like a bunch of Live-Action Roleplayers taking on a few minor gribblies - possibly demonic nasties. The guy shouting "Lightning bolt" is using tennis-balls (I think) to represent the spells and indicate who he's aiming them at. Someone cast (or tried to cast) a sleep spell on a monster. A bunch of fashion-victims paddle ineffectively at the monsters with LRP weapons, usually made of high-density foam and fibreglass (or gaffertape, depending on organisation).
I've done LRP plenty of times, and even I find it rather embarrassing to watch.

Asmor 2003-01-26 08:45:59 PM
Personally, I like the white wolf systems, but find most of the players I've met to be elitist, snobs with nothing better to do than wallow in their own made up self-pity. Of course, that's a good thing, because if it weren't for the games, they'd spend 100% of their time wallowing in their own real self-pity.

D&D's just more fun, imho, due in no small part to the kind of people that play it. We're all geeks, we all know that, and we're all just having fun.

doctechnical 2003-01-26 08:47:48 PM
AbbyNormal: I know I'm dating myself, but remember this?

Abby, I'll see your "Mazes and Monsters" and raise you a James Egbert.

Dating my self: I've been buying Judge's Guild stuff off eBay. Shoot me now.
