i prefer the Jonathon Coulton model. You can buy his CDs, or downloads, or you can get them for free (legally). He makes a decent living touring and selling merch. At each show, the audience throws beanie babies with cash safety pinned to them. Sort of like a tip jar. The fan's generally buy the CDs as a matter of respect. Of course it also helps that he's effing brilliant.
