Nice choices. I don't particularly like "Kid Gloves", but the solo is boss.

Hot damn, his favorite's my favorite.

I like the one in 238/712 time that features notes that only bees can hear.

/ oh wait, that's all of them

Freewill is definitely one of my favorite songs overall, and that solo is just sick.

Oh, c'mon subby. It's time to put aside the alienation and get on with the fascination--the real relation.

/Pay attention to the underlying theme, fer chrissakes.

I always preferred Limelight over Tom Sawyer.

Too funny. I still have my bee to human translator they packaged with "Hemispheres".
The version of "Freewill" embedded in TFA is amazing.

Yeah, it's cool- but what's up with the washing machines running on stage?

MaxxLarge [TotalFark] 2009-02-04 01:59:19 PM
Don't all Rush solos pretty much sound like "*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fap*Fa p*"?

ricewater_stool: Yeah, it's cool- but what's up with the washing machines running on stage?

I read somewhere that Geddy changed his setup so he plugs into the main pa instead of using his own speakers or something like that. To fill the empty space on stage he started putting out washing machines and chicken roasters.

He thought it would make for a more interesting stage show, since they don't dance around like Britney Spears...

Kid Gloves is a kickass song...I always hoped to hear that one live

I knew Limelight was his fave, read that years ago.

I had no idea he did the music for that film about the whale.

If you've ever been on the road for more than a couple of days, then everyone you meet would be glad you had washing machines with you. Even Buddy Holly had the rest of the band's laundry with 'im. Maybe that's what messed with the weight on his plane.

Valdes 2009-02-04 03:05:59 PM
Rush is the best that Canadian music has to offer.

Geddy Lee can't sing. Rush's songs suck.

Canadians can't sing. Canada's music sucks.

I dare someone to list 10 bands that Canada has that are actually any good. And no, Barenaked Ladies and the Guess Who are crappy bands. Choosing a washed up band that had ONE hit song 40 years ago doesn't count.

Dr. Steve Brule 2009-02-04 03:07:50 PM
Agreed on Limelight. Would add the solos from Xanadu and Working Man, myself.

Well, it's not like I need to sit down and write a thesis describing the fact that Rush sucks. Everyone already knows THAT.

Humm how about Neil Young? Or The Northern Pikes? Or Bryan Adams or A host of other good bands.. from Canada.

karmachameleon 2009-02-04 03:40:33 PM
All good choices. The solo on "Limelight" is truly sublime, and the solo on "Freewill" is a real barnburner. I would have replaced "Kid Gloves" with "La Villa Strangiato" myself, but the guy has so many good solos it's kind of pointless to pick 3.

ShredVicious [TotalFark] 2009-02-04 03:45:51 PM
I like Rush, but I've never been particularly impressed by Alex Lifeson's solos. They always seem a bit sloppy and random.

Protest the Hero, Devin Townsend Band (and his metal act, Strapping Young Lad), Into Eternity, and Threat Signal is all I've got. I'm sure there are more though.

I'll feed the obvious troll here....

I actually like the Guess Who. They had alot of great songs.
Someone mentioned Bryan Adams. I have to admit, I saw him live a while back, and he puts on a hell of a show.

Said it many times though, Rush is a great band. Geddy's voice isn't for everyone, but for some reason I like it. It fits.

Freewill has one of my favorite bass moments.

So far, you folks have listed TWO good musicians from Canada (one of which can't sing, by the way)

#1 Neil Young. He moved to California around 35 years ago, about the time he started getting good. I really think that should only 1/2 count, since he's spent more of his life OUTSIDE of Canada than in it.

#2 I will give credit to Joni Mitchell (she must be some sort of mutant freak or an immigrant), who doesn't suck and CAN sing.

Didn't Make the Cut:
The New Pornographers (almost wanted to give this one, but they are still pretty mediocre. This doesn't qualify as a total fail, but doesn't qualify for a win either. Try again when they write more songs.)

The following bands you've listed suck and for the most part can't sing:

Canada's sucksastic-tude:
Skinny Puppy
Frontline Assembly
Guess Who (guess who wasn't really that good and hopes to play your next state fair?)
Bryan Adams (really, he sucks. You listed him. Really?)
Protest the Hero (We want to be Dio! Our arpeggios are "songs"!)
Devin Townsend Band
Into Eternity
Threat Signal
Rush (can't sing, annoying)
The Headstones
Blue Rodeo
The Philosopher Kings
Boomtang Boys
Steppenwolf (two good songs, 40 years ago)
Trooper
Triumph

Nickelback - the Led Zeppelin of Canada.

I hate to trouble you since you've already been so generous with your insight and time, but could you share your qualifications to be the arbiter of what constitutes good music with us? To make such sweeping pronouncements you must surely have some truly astounding background.

Thanks so much.

#1 I am not Canadian. Being Canadian clearly blindsides you to the awfulness that is your own music.

#2 If you like Rush, you are also disqualified. It's similar to trying to have an intellectual discourse with a group of people who think Stephanie Meyers is the greatest author in the world, or people who think that Heroes is actually a good TV show.

Since I am not Canadian, and I dislike Rush, I am therefore the most qualified person to judge the adequacy of select Canadian musicians in this entire thread.

Well, that seems pretty airtight. You need to hang around the politics tab more. They could benefit from your towering intellect.

So would you pleeeeaaaase enlighten us? The poor tasteless savages that must grovel at your feet, as to what you DO consider to be really good music, (which most definitely mustn't come from Canada, land of much musical suckage)

I've seen Rush live, and it was an amazing show. They played two of the three songs mentioned in the article. Heck, they opened with Limelight.

What, exactly, don't you like abotu them?

Well, give these a listen:

Screaming Night Hog - ultimate cruising song, simply excellent
Jupiter Child - great jamming hippie tune
Rock Me - great song, just rocks

There are plenty more - some more somber, those guys are very talented
and put out quite a bit of great music both instrumentally and lyrically.
