What happened to you, Juno?
You used to be so cool in your plucky, indie-girl way!

Wow, Brad Roberts delays one album and the Junos go to crap.

Nice try, Dread Pirate Slasher. I give that a solid 8 out of 10 on the music troll scale.

A Fark thread about Canadian music and no one's mentioned Rush yet?

We don't owe you squat.

We do, however, owe it to ourselves to do exactly what you just said.

Ebenator: A Fark thread about Canadian music and no one's mentioned Rush yet?

So....you're saying it's a good day then.

Hey, Sam Roberts Band are good guys.

Some of their music might not be mind-blowingly awesome but don't put them together with nickelback and celine dion, that isn't fair.

If it was being held in Toronto I'd make sure it gets done. Unfortunately I can't afford both the supplies required and a trip to the other side of the country. But if any BC farkers are looking for ideas, there was an avian flu outbreak there recently.

Sam Roberts is awesome.

The Juno Awards still blow, though.

I just came in here to affirm that there is a lot of awesome Canadian music. Maybe it hasn't been mentioned so far....but it's there.

Tanasychuk: I just came in here to affirm that there is a lot of awesome Canadian music. Maybe it hasn't been mentioned so far....but it's there.

We've put out a lot of good (or at least halfway decent) stuff over the years...

alexisonfire
Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Barenaked Ladies (once upon a time, anyway)
Broken Social Scene
Buck 65
Tommy Chong
City and Colour
The Dears
Feist
Finger Eleven
The Guess Who
Howard Shore
James LaBrie (of Dream Theater)
k-os
Matt Good
Metric (mostly)
Nelly Furtado
Tokyo Police Club
The Tragically Hip

However, I'm not sure any of the above--in any combination--is enough to forgive us for exposing Celine, Nickelback, Billy Talent, and Rush of the world.

Canada is always kinda pathetic when it tries to be like the USA, instead of just being itself.

For just a second, my face began to turn red with disgusted anger, and then I realized. Well played, sir.

9/10

The Junos are just a way of patting Canadian artists on the back for selling records in the US. I'm not quite sure why it is, but they tend to ignore the best Canadian artists and focus entirely on those who can be heard on the radio south of the border. I wonder on this nice list of excellent Canadian artists how many combined Junos they have. I'm guessing K-Os and IME would have a couple, but most of them probably haven't ever drank from the sweet cup of Juno. Oh yea, and the Juno Cup > the Juno Awards.

sonicfluid:

I'm pretty sure that somehow the juno awards people are assuming that 'americans will buy it' means that somehow the entertainment value is better, which is a really difficult assumption to make because "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" has made so many millions of dollars.

I hate Canada for Celine Dion alone.

But they also gave us Rush and Triumph, so I can't hate them too much. Oh, and Bob and Doug McKenzie. "On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...a beer."

But then I remember Celine Dion, and I hate them all over again. Hate hate hate.
