Do you have any idea how hard it is to order pizza and have them get the order right on a cellphone? for some reason, most people drive slower when they have to talk slower. Amusing, annoying, and true all at once.

Hands free is no better than holding the phone in terms of safety.

We should ban passengers too since by that logic talking to the person next to you is no better in terms of safety as well.

they are both annoying and unnecessary.

I don't understand how talking on a hands free is any different then talking to someone in the car.

The difference between a conversation with a passenger and a person on the phone is, with a passenger, you have an extra set of eyes to watch for hazards and a conversation partner who is able to monitor the traffic situation and pause the conversation when things get dicey.

The focus and concentration needed to talk on a phone (hands-free or not) are totally different than those same skills when talking to a person in the car.

At least if you're talking to someone in the car that's a another person with an interest on keeping their eyes on road.

Anyways the conversations people have on cell phones are so often just pointless filler that would go unsaid in person. A moment of silence doesn't have to be awkward and scary.

If you don't know to kill or pause a conversation when "things get dicey" just because you're on the phone, you are a bad driver anyway.

Are you kidding me? Things such as what Joan's friend's boyfriend's sister said to Mary's neighbor's daughter's friend are far too important to wait until you get home. Cell phones are a necessity!

Have you ever actually been in a car? Ya know - one of those electric carriage thingies that are all over the road? Because if you have been you would realize your comment is completely ludicrous.

You'd be surprised... I went to RIT back in the day, and there are a lot of young deaf drivers from NTID out and about around there. Both hands signing furiously while looking directly at the passenger; that was always fun to follow.

Studies show driving while on the phone is just as dangerous as driving drunk. If you think either is okay, you're an idiot.

You'd think I stumbled into a political thread based on the responses I've gotten so far. There was a discussion about how a conversational partner is different from a cell phone conversation, and I gave a couple of theories from studies I've read about cell phone use. I deal with cognition, so it's part of my job to read up on this. Fact is, there are even studies that say cell phone use isn't a big deal, especially if it's casual conversation (vs. business or "complex" conversation). Enjoy ripping me to shreds with your conventional wisdom instead of researching about this stuff, Farkers.

I got t-boned two years ago this week by a chick who ran a stop sign in a mall parking lot; she was talking on her cell, of course. And she was an Iowa driver.
Now, I drive across the I-74 bridge every day to go to work in Iowa, and it never ceases to amaze me how many people are yapping on their phones on both sides of the river.

Multiple scientific studies have shown that talking on a cell phone is not the same as talking to someone in a car. Regardless of what your intuition tells you about them being the same, they are not. In fact, they have shown that the level of impairment is similar to a person that is legally intoxicated.

This is true, but there are plenty of legal distractions and enough existing laws on the books in regards to reckless driving. We simply need to enforce the laws we already have.

In fact, they have shown that the level of impairment is similar to a person that is legally intoxicated.

Some have shown this but there is an important difference. When talking on a cell phone one can become completely unimpaired instantly. This is not true when driving intoxicated.

The headline explains why I'm again cell phone bans. Instead we need to enforce existing laws against shiatty driving. It's okay to slam into a school bus because you were fiddling with your iPod, but not because you were on your cell phone? What about iPhones? You know the person will just claim they were changing songs or looking at the map and not on the phone.
