That's strange... the sky is white and our water is frozen.

New Hampshire is taking advantage of the bad economy by aggressively marketing less-expensive liquor to out-of-state customers.

And remember kids - liquor is bad for you and just say no to smoking!

Of course, if the state needs the money, all bets are off. Sometimes I wonder what MADD thinks of articles like this one. Do they realize the implications for their neo-prohibitionist philosophy, or does the fanatical dedication to their asinine cause burn out the thinking portions of their brains?

Liquor sales will skyrocket. Take away jobs, people lose their jobs, have more time, get depressed, drink more. Which means more DUI convictions, big demand for lawyers, more hospital visits, more demand for prescription drugs.

Has anyone heard of a shortage of police or corrections jobs?

Oh and, Go Cards!

Actually, question for the thread:

We were debating how much alcohol per week is considered too much/borderline alcoholism.

Is a person who drinks a bottle of scotch (750 a week) a week without ever getting drunk someone who falls under that definition?

I think it depends upon how much you pay for the scotch. If it's expensive stuff, you're just a connoisseur.

Category two of drinking.
Category one: drink to celebrate
Category two: drink to forget
Category three: drink to entertain.

A gregarious animal by nature, the homosapien is prone to thoughts of comparison. Instead of an appreciative perspective on existence as a whole, the ape feels compelled to make value judgements as a passtime. This results in things being viewed as having a value across sliding scales, such as "Good vs Bad" and whatnot. The unfortunate result of this two dimensional worldview is that someone always "loses". Thus, at least 50% of the universe is having a "bad day" at all times. Enter sandman, er, booze.

Right, but I would think that it applies when you have something bad happen to you, but still have the money.

If you have no money and still drink like crazy to forget about having no money, you end up even worse off. Seems stupid at that point. You would be better off saving the money, hence helping yourself out of poverty.

I get why people do it, but it just doesn't make sense to me personally.

No, that doesn't sound bad at all really. My own experience was roughly a 750 per evening of either rum or vodka...

Wouldn't the best thing to do in a down economy be distilling your own? They need to legalize that in small quantities like they did beer.

Ah, but see, you're probably middle class.

The same rules don't apply to the poorer class.

I was wondering if there is anything in society that would reduce the amount of liquor bought. In an up economy I doubt we'd see the complimentary article.

Hmm. A good question. I would shoot lower, though. Who makes shoddy, offbrand vaseline? That would be the cornerstone of my investment portfolio, if only I weren't blind. Can't see a thing.
