You mean it might take days, even weeks to restore power to over half a million people after a devastating ice storm? My GOD! Stop the presses! We better alert Washington DC circa 1999, the central plains in 2002, most of the farking country in '07, And pretty much everybody back in 1998.

Go cry moar, his response to this was better then ANY of the above, and yet some of you nutballs just can't let it go. In a way, i'm glad, since i fuel my car off your delicious tears, so keep up the fine work.

Did you even read the article?

queezyweezel 2009-02-01 01:17:00 PM
i see where subby is coming from. The national guard is there going door to door checking on people.
There is a small army of linemen from all over the country working to replace thousands of miles of power lines.
Food and water are being trucked in, shelters are open and emergency generators are functioning to keep hotels and motels open as temp housing. Sounds like piss poor disaster recovery to me.

bobnalong [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 01:19:27 PM
I think what subby meant was that when Obama waved his hand to produce rainbows and unicorns he trembled and instead wrought an ice storm upon Kentucky.

This thread isn't off to a good start.

So here's a starter: FEMA doesn't roll in on Day One, unannounced. FEMA gets asked by state & local to roll in.

Same as Katrina, same now.

That's the way the fed, state & local entities are operating, and have been operating for decades. So I don't understand subby's complaint, or BlackCat23's or queezyweezel's comments. Or them that derided FEMA for a late response to Katrina, since local & state has to start the ball rolling.

OBTW, anti-Wal-Mart h8trz should note that Wal-Mart and disaster relief organizations have a deal -- to dispense water etc during an emergency.

BGates [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 01:25:41 PM
Probably making a comparison to Bush who got blamed when things didn't magically happen after Katrina.

But since it's Obama, everything is ok.

So the Republicans now think Obama controls the weather? I'm starting to see why they can't win an election.

Obama has been in office almost 2 weeks and he still dont have FEMA straightend out!!!! What a slacker!!!!

The stupidity of Freepers is getting absolutely hilarious. They warp anything they possibly can into Obama being bad, and throw it at him praying anything will stick. I love this. Keep it up, keep pissing off everyone but the hardcore social conservatives. That will get you back in power!

Fark IndependentsTM sure seem to be trying hard to make an issue out of nothing.

Maybe we should blame Kentuckians for not evacuating before the ice storm hit. Sounds like they got what they deserve because they didn't leave.

/Big difference between ice storms and Category-5 hurricane.
//Been through both and will take an ice storm anytime.

gonzoliga: So I don't understand subby's complaint, or BlackCat23's or queezyweezel's comments.

I think you need to re-read my comments. It had nothing to do with response times given, but instead made the point that there were many storms just like this, with similar, or even worse destruction and responses. And yet the fark independents just can't help but slather up the shlong, and have long hard jerk about it.

Maybe the "conservatives" can pray in church today for another disaster to strike. Even if they can't successfully vindicate their Messiah Bush and blast Obama it would still be a win for them if Americans suffer.

John Paul Jones [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 02:58:05 PM
Ummm. We lost power for a few weeks in December (remember? Bush was President and all that?) Some places were without power until just a week ago. I think the total number of houses without power in New England was something like 600,000 or more.

I don't remember anyone getting their panties in a bunch about what Bush was doing about it. Yaknow why? He didn't do a god damned thing, nor did we expect him to.

So, in short. Go f*ck yourself subby.

After all, wouldn't want good christians to suffer.

You know what really impressed me? The fact that nobody in Kentucky complained when Obama ordered the police and National Guard to go door to door confiscating firearms.
I guess people are going to lay down and submit to his gun grabbing ass.

It's their own damn fault for choosing to live somewhere that ice storms might occur. This is completely foreseeable. Why should we bail them out of their poor decisions?

tallguywithglasseson: I hadn't heard about this ice storm. How many have died?

The storm that began in the Midwest has been blamed or suspected in at least 42 deaths, including nine in Arkansas, six each in Texas and Missouri, three in Virginia, two each in Oklahoma, Indiana and West Virginia and one in Ohio. Most were blamed on hypothermia, traffic accidents and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hey, TFA was actually good for something!

I heard that (at least) one of the deaths was because some moran brought his charcoal BBQ into his house to keep warm.

Care to pin that on Obama, subby?

It's not that simple: Here is the situation as it started. (new window)

Bush and the Governor were having a power struggle...but she did ask for help and bush gave it.

The complaint is HOW BAD and incompetent the rescue effort wen off.

Obama actually called the Governor, and then helped with the Governor asked for it.

I believe Obama revealed another plan to rework the powr grid infrastructure by mid week. To be designed to take advantage of more green power and be reworked so that we can charge electric cars at our home.

So WTF? gonzoliga explained everything better than I could have. So I defer to him/her/it.

Should he? He still handled it. I'm not a Bush supporter mind you, but he still did his job no matter where he was at.

Apparently, Bush and Blanco got into a pissing match (see above snopes link) Bush wanted complete control of local and states authorities. The theory is that the State government was afraid once they relinquished control, the fed would blame them for thing that gone wrong.

But on the Saturday when they found out that the Hurricane WAS going to be horrendous, Blanco asked for help and Bush acted.

Quite frankly, I think it's arguable that Bush did his job at any point during his entire administration. He did lots of things, but did very little that I could consider holding to the oath of office:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." .

I think it's the wrong article

Local officials were growing angry with what they said was a lack of help from the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In Grayson County, about 80 miles southwest of Louisville, Emergency Management Director Randell Smith said the 25 National Guardsmen who have responded have no chain saws to clear fallen trees. He did his job, just horribly. Yes he sent FEMA down there, but the guy who was running had no clue what to do or how to handle it. My complaint has always been that he handled things horribly.

And how 'bout that shiny new Freedom tower in NYC? It was great the day they impaled Osama's head on the antenna mast.

First of all, Obama completed the paperwork declaring Kentucky a disaster area at 10:30 PM Wednesday. 50 generators arrived at Fort Campbell for dispersal to hospitals, shelters, etc. by noon Thursday.

Secondly, subby is obviously not in Kentucky. I actually know what's going on here. To see storm damage, all I have to do is look in my own backyard. (new window)

Most of Kentucky consists of narrow, winding country roads, much of it mountainous to boot. Even if the entire Army was here, there would still be people homebound and people without power. It's bad. But the reaction has been swift, and conditions are improving noticeably every day.

Interesting article, but it explained that FEMA is still trying to reach areas that are cut off and too dangerous to travel to. But that doesn't mean that they shouldn't have figured out a way.

It may be time to look at procedures. Hopefully Obama team will figure out where the weaknesses are and fix them.
