Are they sure it isn't the Solanum virus?

Barakku [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 11:34:01 AM
They've been farming infected chickens for years...probably decades by now. If it was going to kill us all or was even half-assed transmissible, China should be dead right now

I have normal flu, does that count? I wonder how long before flu will mutate and be transmittable through fark threads.

tonesskin [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 11:55:17 AM
Is "bird flu" a euphemism for "gold standard currency?" If so, I agree with the headline.

TheShavingofOccam123 [TotalFark] 2009-02-01 11:55:38 AM
man, i hope the bird flu has been misdiagnosed in thousands of humans who had it and survived. otherwise, we are in deep doo-doo.

GTFO. Now. Go quarantine yourself in the "You (got killed by) Kenny. You bastard" thread. Nobody's there; you'll infect fewer farkers.

I think the predictions are wrong anyway. If it ever does become human-to-human transmittable then it either won't be very contagious or it will not be as deadly.

I know there is a chance that it could go the way they predict but there is also a chance that any random virus could come along, mutate and do the same thing but the odds are against that.

Except that Asia is a huge petri dish where billions of human live in close proximity (sometimes sharing houses) with humans. Eventually, somebody becomes a vector, Victor. If one strain of this has already jumped, what's going to stop the next one? I know, let's just keep pretending like the last one didn't happen, that SARS didn't happen. Too many Asians, with not enough common sense about hygiene.

It's not the asians - it's the fact that uneducated people tend to have more children.

I'm not saying that pandemics are impossible. I was talking about this specific virus.

NicoFinn: I hate that birds are getting a bad reputation from all this.

Oh, you are one those "bad apples" one. When are you going to get that birds are not the species of peace like the doves would have you believe. You think it is random that poultry are busy spreading their biological weapons while geese are busy crashing planes. And do you have any idea how many birds have crashed into buildings in New York City?

Look, I understand that you probably have a friend that is a bird that is an exception, but that doesn't mean shiat. The species as a whole obviously is violent. Otherwise you would hear the bird leaders expressing their outrage.

Dudes. When it (or something else) finally breaks, and people start dying, you guys will be amongst the first to panic.

This is just the latest. A few weeks ago, Yahoo's story actually listed all the locations of the dead. At that time, there were only 5 dead, I think. But the dead were scattered over the whole country. Now, this one is located in the central region. Thinking about how open and helpful the Chinese press is, multiply this by about 100 and maybe it's getting close to accurate. Still, fun to watch from a nice distance.

I'm only gonna start worrying when we're closer to a full blown pandemic. 254 people dead since 2003 is a negligible amount. When it becomes 254 deaths weekly or daily, THAT is when I'll be more likely to panic and take precautions.
