When I was in college I had an RA who was from Pakistan. One night during a huge street party (VEISHA at Iowa State? Anyone?) a bunch of us ran into him, and he was really excited that some hot girl had given him her phone number. We looked at the piece of paper she had written it on, and is said 867-5309. Being from Pakistan and fairly drunk, he hadn't caught it. It was hilarious.

I use 867-5309 as part of a promotion at work. Granted, it's spelled out, and people don't recognize it right away.

I have an email address that's been out in the clear since 1993, so I'm getting a kick out of your reply, along with about a megabyte of spam a day.

Back on topic, one time I was waiting tables at this godawful money-house steak restaurant, and I was chatting up this one table like nobody's business. I was working it hard, comping food and drinks for them, and everything was clicking along right on time. I was expecting a pretty nice tip.

So one of the girls leaves me a photo of herself -- just a photo -- with a phone number. There was no money for me at all, and the phone number was, you guessed it, 867-5309.

You can bet your ass every last one of those comps got reversed. That just about doubled their bill, and then the manager let me slap 15% on the credit card. And that silly-ass photo got faxed to every franchise in the state. Turns out she's a regular customer, or at least she used to be. The end.

I hear ya on the highschool German thing. If I'd taken Spanish instead, I would have gotten some serious mileage out of it here in CA. If you work in foodservice/retail out here, you're bound to end up working with some immigrants that only speak Spanish.
